I’m going to continue posting a 2017 First Year Player Draft thread so we can keep all our draft talk in one place. This is where I will look for any information on signings. If you here one of our new prospects has signed, please share the link here.
So far, I have solid evidence that, the Phillies have signed the following guys –
- #8 – Jhordany Mezquita under slot per Jonathan Mayo Twitter
- #9 – Jack Zoellner per his social media (converting to third per Matt Breen article)
- #10 – Connor Brogdon per Matt Breen article
- #11 – Jake Holmes overslot per Jonathan Mayo Twitter
- #14 – Zach Warren per his social media
The Phillies draft signings are being tracked on our 2017 Draft Tracker. As signings are announced, the tracker will be updated. Be sure to share any information and I will incorporate it into the tracker.
Of course, all draft talk is encouraged here. I will start new threads if/when the number of comments becomes too unwieldy.
Do any of the tough signings come aboard?

I think Holmes can be considered somewhat tough but that bonus convinced him!

Didnt someone post that they had deals with 90% already?
LikeLike
Yes, it was based on a Johnny Almaraz interview on Phil’s pregame.
LikeLike
Yea…I can count about 5 or 6 that aren’t signing, which would mean it’s not 90% LOL

Just guessing here, but he likely meant that “90% of our deals are already in place”… so of the people they expected to sign, 90% were done already.

Also, not saying his comments weren’t… really weird, at the very least. Seems like an odd thing to say no matter what.

It said 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 signed.
It said nothing about 3rd round pick Seabold.
But did indicate that Haseley’s contract is worked out and agreed to and will be announced by Thursday.

That’s Zoellner 9th Rd for 50 thousand who are the Phillies saving up for?
LikeLike
looks like they saved about 340k total on round 8-10 picks..and they spent an extra 375k on 11th rounder Holmes. so only “extra” dollars they have is about 425k of their 5% excess on pool, and any additional savings on rounds 1-7.
Assume Fitch from Louisville might require something over 125k to sign..
so maybe 1 more post round 10 guy could be signed with whats left?

tim you sure they gave a 23 yr old 50 thousand. i would think he would sign for 5 thousand,

The Mayo link above has the bonus $ at $10K for Zoellner. (As per the PhPh Draft Tracker spreadsheet.)

Haseley signed for $5.1 mil. (400k overslot). There goes the savings….

I was dead wrong on that…..I thought he sign for $4.2M.

FWIW….Shane Baz (a supposedly tough sign) signed with the Pirates for $4.1M a couple of days after the draft. While Trevor Rogers signed for $3.4M with the stinking Marlins.

Phillies got raked when you look at the Baz and Rogers signings. I thought the idea of taking a 3rd year college kid was to sign him under slot not over slot. If he turns out to be darn good it won’t matter. But he better turn out to be darn good.

This was a very college heavy draft. Did the Phils go this route because they selected the best players available? Or were they hoping to sign these guys under slot in hopes of making a strong push for the high school players they drafted day 3? If that was their strategy, it looks like it will backfire. If you can’t sign a player away from his commitment to the University of Delaware, then you don’t have the money to go over slot. Shane Baz would have been my choice at 8, but we are in the age of analytics, so stats rule the day.

Paven just signed for slot which is less than Haseley got.

He was also ranked lower by some outlets as a 1b only prospect. He did well to get the $5M. Haseley was consensus top 10. Their 2nd pick Howard got $400K underslot, which basically offsets the overslot to Haseley.
LikeLike
That is surprising.
Though Pavin smith is quite possibly limited to first base and their value on a whole is less than a CFer like Haseley.

so the over slot to Haseley vs the underslot to Howard come close to evening out.
a little disappointing- i was Ok with picking Haseley over Burger, but now seeing Burger sign for 1.4 million less makes me rethink things a bit with relative abundance of left handed hitting outfielders in the system vs lack of third basemen.
LikeLike
Can understand your position, when you put it that way.
Haseley, with Williams, Cozens, Randolph, Moniak, and even Pullin does make it fairly lefty oriented OF situation…not to mention Herrera also..
But then again, taking Burger at 8, may have been drafting for need in leau of what people refer to as BPA.

My confident in the Chicago org liked my Troy Glaus comp for Burger but candidly had doubts he can stick at 3B.
LikeLike
Yes…Glaus would be a good comp…though Glaus was able to make it to the majors 14 months after he was drafted and hit with power like Kris Bryant in their brief minor league careers …
Perhaps Haseley gets to the show in 14 months…like Conforto and Benintendi.
