Box Score Recap

Lehigh Valley cruised to a lop-sided victory, 13-1 behind Ben Lively and 5 home runs.

Reading lost its 8th consecutive game, 4-1.  Scott Kingery hit his 15th home run.

Clearwater saw the lead seesaw back and forth late before losing in ten innings..

Lakewood scored only one run in a loss.

Updates on injuries to Mickey Moniak and Jhailyn Ortiz.

Lehigh Valley (33-15) romped over Louisville, 13-1.

Ben Lively pitched 8.0 strong innings.  A fielding error led to an unearned run in his last inning.  He gave up 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out seven.  Lively threw 114 pitches, 83 strikes (72.8%).  Ricardo Pinto gave up 2 hits in a scoreless ninth.

The IronPigs powered past the bats on the strength of 5 home runs and 6 doubles among their 15 hits.  Cameron Perkins led off as Roman Quiinn was given a day off.  Perkins went 2-3 and reached base on a walk and HBP.  He scored twice, doubled, homered (4), and had 2 RBI.  He struck out the only time he didn’t reach base.

Nick Williams had 3 hits.  Along with Perkins (.279), J.P. Crawford, Dylan Cozens, and Pedro Florimon had 2 hits each. In addition to Perkins, Crawford (2), Featherston (3), Williams (8), and Florimon (1) hit home runs.  Williams had 4 RBI, Crawford, Featherston, and Florimon joined Perkins with 2 each.

Florimon got the scoring started with a lead off home run in the third inning.  Later in the inning, Crawford lined an RBI single.  Lehigh Valley broke the game open with 6 runs in the fourth on Williams 2-run single, Florimon’s RBI double, Perkins 2-run HR, and Crawford’s solo HR.  The IronPigs tacked on 2 more runs in the seventh on Williams RBI double and Jorge Alfaro’s RBI single.  They continued to pour it on with 3 more in the eighth on Featherston’s 2-run HR and Williams solo HR.

The IronPigs hit back-to-back HRs twice in the game – Perkins and Crawford in the fourth and Featherston and Williams in the eighth.  Five HRs and none by Cozens and Hoskins. Who would have believed that.

Howie Kendrick (.167) played the whole game at third base, went 1-5 with a double, and struck out 3 times.

Williams also picked up an outfield assist (second).

Reading (23-21) suffered its eighth loss in a row, losing 4-1 to New Hampshire.

Another bullpen game as Mario Sanchez (2.35) got the start.  He gave up 3 runs in 5.0 innings on 6 hits and a walk.  He struck out one batter and gave up a solo HR.  Alexis Rivero (3.38) pitched 1.0 inning.  Austin Davis (1.23) gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 2.0 innings.

Scott KIngery accounted for a lot of the offense with 2 hits, a HR (15), and a walk.  Kyle Martin (.197) also had 2 hits and is creeping up on .200.

Davis picked a runner off first.  Aaron Brown picked up an outfield assist (home).

Interesting fact, although probably not unusual since he’s a lead off hitter, over half of Scott Kingery’s 29 RBIs were himself on his 15 home runs.

Clearwater (27-23) lost to St. Lucie, 4-3 in ten innings.  Both teams scored a run in the first inning.  Clearwater took the lead with a run in the seventh, but fell behind when the Mets scored 2 runs in the eighth.  The Threshers came back to tie the game in the ninth, only to lose in the tenth.

Jose Taveras (2.26) had another nice game.  He struck out 5 in 6.0 innings.  He allowed 4 hits including a solo HR and just 1 earned run.  He walked none.  Harold Arauz (3.12) blew the save with 2 runs in 1.1 innings on 3 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out two.  Tyler Gilbert (2.77) pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two.  Ranfi Casimiro (2-2, 4.08) took the loss.  He walked the bases loaded with one out in the tenth.  He got a ground ball to Grenny Cumana, but it was chopped softly and he had no chance at a double play and his off balance throw home was late.  Walks’ll kill ya’.

Zach Coppola scored in the first on Damek Tomscha’s RB single.  Cornelius Randolph doubled and scored on Wilson Garcia’s RBI double in the seventh to take the lead.  Herlis Rodriguez reached on an error in the ninth and scored on Coppola’s two-out, RBI single.

Coppola (.342) had 2 hits and stole 2 bases (10).  Deivi Grullon (.281) had 2 hits and a walk. Grenny Cumana (.270) had 2 hits.

Lakewood (28-21) lost to Delmarva (7-1).

Felix Paulino (1-4, 6.27) pitched into the sixth inning.  He allowed 2 runs prior to the inning and left with one out after two singles.  Ismael Cabrera (2.42) entered and promptly gave up a double and home run.  He gave up another run in the seventh.  Tyler Hallead (0.00) struck out 3 in 2.0 innings.

Darick Hall (.259) provided all the scoring for the BlueClaws with his fifth home run HR. Cord Sandberg (.278) had a 2-hit game.

Mickey Moniak was not in the line up.  A reader provided the following update in the comments section of yesterday’s Recap, “Mickey has a bruised rt hand. No break . Has had same injury in HS and needed about a week but was fine” .   This is pretty solid info since it came from his father.

Williamsport (0-0) – first game on Monday, June 19th at State College.

Jhailyn Ortiz was hurt in a collision Thursday in the outfield.  In the eighth inning of a game in Bradenton.  On a ball hit deep to right center field, the center fielder (probably Juan Luis) slid to catch the ball and also to avoid Ortiz who tried to leap over his team mate and catch the ball.  His foot was planted and the center fielder rolled over his ankle.  Ortiz was in a lot of pain.  He was taken off the field on a cart  and transported to the hospital.

Friday, Ortiz took batting practice.  He is sore but reported to be fine.  He is expected to be back in the line up some time next week.

  1. Since I was so negative on Kyle Martin earlier this season, it’s only fitting I call out his last 10 games. He’s hit in 9 of them. He’s hitting .361 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs over the 10 game stretch. He’s also reduced his Ks to 5 and he’s added 3 BBs. Impressive comeback for a guy whose BA was nearing the weight of a 15 y/o female gymnast and his Ks were close to matching Cozens or even Pujols. Keep it up Kyle. Reading needs someone to get hot — other than Kingery.

  2. Watching last nights iron pig game a few things stood out to me. First very impressed with Cozens at bat against lefthander when he just stay with the pitch and took it to left for a single. Crawford to my eye is a really good fielding shortstop, so natural. The inning they exploded against that pitcher, who i believe is from New Jersey and played for St Joseph. The kid has been getting hammer by everyone, it believe the announcer said. Hopkins isnt a gazelle at first. lacks range just based on one game. and i didnt have my glasses on. so maybe its me. Williams who i have hammered look good at the plate last night. Best i ever had seen him. Alfaro looks like a wild swinger to me. I think i mention this last year. If you watch Perkins. one game he looks like a great prospect, next time you see him, you think he isnt much. he is the most confusing player i ever have seen. Now to Lively. i have only seen him i believe three times. Last night the way he can change speeds and that curve makes him a nice three or maybe higher starter,. from the little i have seen.

      Also liked the interview with Kendrick. The Phillies talked about his leadership and I can see what they mean in this interview. If veteran leadership is what they lack, maybe he will provide that when he returns. Also interesting that he’s going to play some at 3B. Franco needs someone to spell him when he starts pressing, which appears to be all the time lately.

  4. How much more fun it’ll be to follow the Pigs when Kingery is promoted! ….but then Hoskins and Quinn may in Philly by then. And Williams soon after.

    1. I just figured out Franco’s swing. He is trying to hit it so hard that he is actually dipping down just a tad and putting the bat lower than what his vision is seeing. Less of a leg step and trying to make a quick solid swing (bat speed) without all of the extra umpff into it then he would be hitting 280 like he can and with the same amount of homers probably. He would hit line drives as his swing plane is actually very good. By dropping down he messes up his eye hand coordination thus he ends the swing under the ball. And leading the league in losing your batting helmet while swinging is not a good thing. That is my 2 cents – and it is fixable and he has the ability to be above average

  5. John Y ran into Kingery after a game a few nights ago and asked about the HR power . . . Kingery’s reply what something like “I have no clue where this is coming from but it won’t last”. (I’m sure that’s him being modest) John if you read this let me know how much I butchered the encounter and please make corrections . . .

    1. i did like this quote from Kingery from the Philly.com piece a couple days ago:
      “Playing in Reading, it’s easy to think about that and start trying to get big. I felt myself doing that a couple weeks ago and I had to remind myself as I move up that I’m not going to be a homerun hitter. I’m still going to be a line drive hitter that finds the gaps. I have to keep that line drive swing going.”

      1. Kingery is more of a line drive player so there is a good chance that he hits the same amount of extra base hits – it could be just a difference of what type they are

  6. Kingery continues to amaze. In addition to the 15 bombs, his avg is now over 300, with 10 steals and I believe still just the one error. I would love to see him in LHV for June but it probably won’t be until July.
    I think it’s time to give Lively a major league start or two. He’s earned it.
    What’s the potential of Coppola? He’s a good OF with speed who is hitting 340 at Cwater. I’d like to see if he can keep hitting at Reading. Cwater has enough OF without him.

      I can’t speak to Coppola’s potential, but at the plate, he reminds me of Kingery when he was in Clearwater – a slap hitter who uses all fields and bunts when available. That’s not to say that Coppola will find the power Kingery did when he went to Reading. If you recall, I wasn’t impressed with Kingery in Clearwater, and was totally surprised by his transformation in spring training.

      Defensively, Coppola is very good. He can play all three outfield positions. He has good lateral range in center field, and comes in on balls very well. He has taken away quite a few base hits charging balls in right field. I haven’t seen enough of his arm to comment on its strength.

      He runs the bases very well. He’s aggressive. His SB ratio isn’t as good as you would expect, but pick offs count as caught stealing and a couple times he was called out when he looked safe. The FSL only has 2 game umpires, so the base umpire is often out of position when calling runners out at second. He positions himself between the mound and second base (shaded toward short) so the fielder’s body is always between the umpire and the base runner.

  10. Austin Davis gave up his first run in AA, but he’s off to a good start there. If he keeps it up, maybe we’ll see him in Philly by the end of the year.

    Coppola probably tops out as a 4th OF in the Ben Revere mold (I don’t think his hit tool is as good as Ben’s though). If his game is about defense and speed, he’ll have to do better when it comes to stealing bases. 10 SB against 6 CS this season. Needs work.

  11. Before last night’s games, both Crawford and Randolph were on the “interstate”. Randolph has now inched over the Mendoza line. Crawford to follow soon?

    Speaking of the Mendoza line, growing up, I always heard it was around 222. Now, when people speak/write about it, they say it’s .200. Does anyone know for sure?

  12. Randolph with two hits in three at bats today. Hopefully he’s starting to adjust to high A.

    I’ve been critical of Crawford’s ability to drive the ball but it seems like he’s coming around. With the MLB being what it is seeing the prospects come on strong is a beautiful thing to watch.

  14. Romus I wonder if Lively will be any better than effin or any of our starters? I remember years ago hearing you need different types to be starters. In other words if you face all the same in a series.. all right handers who cant break a egg like we got. It easier to adjust. instead of a hard thrower one night and left hander the next. VV is the only one with good velo. but he is not a pitcher right now. just a thrower.

    1. I haven’t been watching too many Phillies games lately since the rotation is putting us in the hole early and often, but I tried to watch Eflin. He’s done. We need to see what Lively can do instead of Eflin. Eflin’s secondary pitches are all below average. It looks like he has no deception on his pitches. And he has no control with his 2-seamer, it’s leaking into the middle of the plate and he’s getting ripped.

      Hard to believe that Lively can’t be better than Eflin.

    3. Eflin and Thompson, and also Eshelman, are still pretty young at 23 and still have to get just a little more experience. Pivetta’s 24 and Lively and Appel are 25.
      Might as well see what Lively can do, I think it is time for him to get his MLB debut.

      1. Eflin is young, perhaps he can turn it around, but not at the ML level where he is giving up 7 runs and 4 HRs to the Reds. He can do his adjustments at Lehigh.

        Pivetta has a more explosive fastball, and he just needs to tighten his secondary pitches to be more effective.

        Appel is headed to the bullpen no doubt.

        Phillies need to see what Lively can do. Lively really has had 1 bad start in his last 7 at Lehigh.

  18. I’ll tell you what, I never thought much of Pullin . . . only bc every time I saw him he looked horrible on off speed pitches, beat up on fastballs tho. Figured this would get exploited once teams picked up on this. Well at this point i’m sure there is a decent scouting report on Pullin and i’m sure he’s seeing off speed stuff more than fastball yet he’s absolutely raking. When Quinn gets called up (who had a Quinn like game today) Pullin should get the call up (AA to AAA) as well, maybe him and Kingery? This leads me to my question . . . So Kingery isn’t going to make it to Philly this year and prob isn’t the starting 2B next year either . . So at what point do you promote him? or do you leave him be for the year and let his confidence go thru the roof? I feel like there are positives to both sides.

    1. If Herrera gets sent down to Lehigh, then I can see Quinn come up. Otherwise, Nick Williams is red hot right now and if he keeps it up till mid-June, I could see him coming up and taking RF (with Saunders getting cut).
