Box Score Recap

Lehigh Valley won as Nick Williams continued his recent power surge with his 4th HR in the past week.

Reading lost but Tyler Viza pitched well in a no decision.

Clearwater fell behind in another bullpen game and couldn’t recover.

Lakewood lost the “fog” game but thrashed Delmarva in the night cap behind a superb game by Bailey Falter.

Lehigh Valley (32-15) came back to tie the game in the sixth and put it away with a crooked number in the eighth as they beat Louisville, 9-4.

Tom Eshelman (1.82) started but missed out on the decision.  He pitched 6.2 innings,  striking out six and walking none.  But he gave up all four runs on seven hits.  He threw 93 pitches, 64 strikes (68.8%).  Eshelman wasn’t lifted until the seventh inning.  With the score tied, he gave up a one out triple.  After striking out the next batter, he was relieved by Pat Venditte who ended the threat and stranded the inherited runner.  Venditte (0.36) pitched a scoreless eighth and was awarded the victory.  Pedro Beato (1.54) retired the side in order in a non-save situation.

The IronPigs overcame an early one run deficit with two runs in the fourth inning, one on a fielding error on a ball hit by Jorge Alfaro and an RBI single by Nick Williams.  They responded to Louisville’s three-run sixth with Williams’ two-run HR (7) to tie the game at four. And, they blew the game open with five runs in the eighth on Taylor Featherston’s three-run HR (2), and Hector Gomez’ two-run HR (3).

Williams and Featherston (.271) hit home runs and had three RBIs each. Williams had two hits along with J.P. Crawford and Jorge Alfaro.

Howie Kendrick (.143) started in LF, batted third,  played the entire game and went 1-4 with a run scored.  With Kendrick in the outfield, Roman Quinn was in CF, Williams in RF, and Dylan Cozens had the night off.

Reading (23-20) suffered their seventh loss in a row, losing 4-3 to New Hampshire in 11 innings.

Reading opened up a 3-0 lead on an RBI ground out  by Andrew Pullin and an RBI single by Jiandido Tromp in the first inning, and an RBI single by Carlos Tocci in the third inning. But those three runs required five of the nine singles the Phils would get in the game.  In fact, they only got one hit after the sixth inning, a Tocci single.

Tyler Viza (5.95) pitched six, three-hit innings.  He gave up two unearned runs in the third inning when the Phils committed both of their two errors.  He walked none and struck out seven.  Viza retired the last ten batters he faced, and left with a 3-2 lead.  Colton Murray (4.91) pitched two innings and blew the save allowing the game-tying run in the eighth inning.  Jesen Therrien (1.05) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three.  Miguel Nunez (0-3, 2.00) got the first out in the 11th before giving up a walk off HR on a 2-0 pitch.

Clearwater (27-22) lost to St. Lucie, 5-2.

Edgar Garcia was asked to start again and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 4.1 innings.  He struck out five.  Blake Quinn (5.57) gave up a run on no hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.  Matt Hockenberry (2.77) struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings.

The Threshers scored two runs in the seventh inning after falling into a 5-0 hole.  They converted on two-out, RBI singles by Drew Stankiewicz (.295) and Grenny Cumana (260).

Cumana had 2 of the Threshers 8 hits. Damek Tomscha (.307) had a double, their only XBH. The Threshers struck out twelve times with Jose Pujols striking out in all 4 of his at bats.

Lakewood (28-20) split two games with Delmarva.  They dropped the continuation of the suspended game 4-3, and came back to whip the Shorebirds 8-0 in the night cap.

Game One: Adonis Medina’s line was affected by the umpire’s decision to play until the BlueClaws lost a ball in the fog.  The decision led to 3 runs.  Medina ended up allowing 4 runs (3 ER) on 2 hits and 5 walks.  He struck out five.  Casey Brown was on the mound when the game restarted on Friday and allowed the inherited runner to score from second before ending the sixth inning.  He pitched two more scoreless innings.  Mauricio llovera pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Mickey Moniak had a two-hit game.  Edgar Cabral (.262) went 4-4 with 2 runs scored, a double, a HR (1), and an RBI.  Darick Hall (.259) had the ‘Claws other hit.  Their other two runs scored on a throwing error and a Daniel Brito ground out.  Arquimedes Gamboa (.241) went 0-4 in his first game back off the DL.

Moniak had an outfield assist (home).  Brown picked a runner off first.

Game Two: Bailey Falter (2-2, 3.35) pitched his best game of the season.  He pitched 6.0 innings of shutout ball and gave up just 3 hits and a walk.  He struck out seven (and recorded a game score of 75, his highest since a 78 last season).  Jonathan Hennigan (5.31) struck out three in two innings.  Trevor Bettencourt (0.56) struck out three in one inning.

The BlueClaws ended the suspense early with an eight-run third inning.  Their first run scored on a throwing error on a force attempt.  Darrick Hall brought home the second run with an RBI single.  Brett Barbier followed with a 2-run double.  The fifth run scored on a fielder’s choice by Henri Lartigue.  Luke Williams chased home the next two runs with a 2-run double.  He scored the final run of the inning on another error by the Shorebirds.

Daniel Brito and Cord Sandberg (.273)had 2-hit games.  Luke Williams scored twice in the 8-run inning.  Sandberg, Williams, and Barbier each doubled in the game.  Barbier and Williams had 2 RBIs each.  Arquimedes Gamboa didn’t play in the second game.

Sandberg entered the game as a defensive replacement for Mickey Moniak at the start of the second inning. No explanation. Moniak had been called out on strikes in the bottom of the first. There is no indication whether he was injured or ejected.  Sorry, that’s all I have.

  1. Somebody last night posted that Mickey Mo was hit on the hand in his 1st AB, but it was called a foul ball. Trainer spent considerable time looking at his hand. Whoever gets the official word please post. Thanks.

    2. Moniak finished his at bat. Swung and missed at strike two and took strike three looking. I don’t think he could have done that with something broken in his hand so I am hoping for the best.

  3. It looks to me from the last 10 games or more, LHV opponents are trying something relatively new. Make sure Hoskins doesn’t beat you. He’s walked 9 times in the last 10 games and has 3 Ks. When they put the ball, bad things happen to them. Last night, Williams, Featherstone and Gomez stepped up and said, Don’t worry I got this.”

    The 20 y/o Bailey Falter has made 8 starts this season. Five have been good to great, giving up 2 runs or less in 5 or more IP. One has been not so good where he gave up 4 runs in 2 IP. Two were okay where he gave up 3 runs in 6 or 7 innings. For a 20 y/o, at his level, he’s been spectacular. His birthday was in April so he started the year as a 19 y/o. He’s also given up 6 BBs in 43 IP. His 35 Ks are fine and as he moves up we’ll see if his pinpoint control will be Jaime Moyer like or more like a batting practice pitcher. Did I mention, he’s a lefty?

    2. And last ten games Williams has 5 homers hitting over 300. He was hitting for a good average until he had a down week or two where he just couldn’t hit anything it seemed, but it looks like he’s picking it back up. Hopefully this continues.

        Anyway, regarding Williams – if he continues to do reasonably well at the plate, I would make the suggestion to Matt K to bring him up after the deadline, assuming Howie and Saunders are gone, and have him play 3/4 games per week, spend extra time in the cage with Stairs. I’d be interested to see how he progresses. The tools are there. He just might need the ongoing tweak that Stairs provided in camp. Gotta find out sooner than later.

          1. rocco…..he has all the tools but the most important one…..hitting and the approach.
            he has above average to almost plus with speed, field, arm and power.
            He just cannot maintain what is required in all aspects for an adequate OBP requirement.

            1. We may have to face the reality that he may never be a high OBP guy. However, he could be successful as a #5 or #6 hitter, .270ish with 25 HR power and 80+ rbi in a decent lineup. Whether he’d be a fit would depend on the makeup of the lineup. Again, this is only my projection should he make reasonable progress over the short term.

            2. Romus i have seen him about 10 times or more. IMO he doesnt either recognize pitches or his bat is slow. I dont see that bat speed that others see. He is a lot like dom brown in his approach to hitting. Now as a fielder i have only see routine type plays so i cant comment on that, but he isnt a 280 or better hitter with power in majors. believe me. unless a miracle happens

            3. rocco/8mark…..he will never be a 3 hole hitter. But as you say he will probably hit in the 5th/6th/7th hole….more like 6th or 7th. I like to think eventually he will be a few notches below a Jackie Bradley Jr when it comes to BA/OBP, but possibly more power.

        1. His fast ball was 88-89 with a tops of 90 last night. Has a decent curve. Basically throws the same speed as Fanti. I was more impressed with Fanti although this is only based on seeing them one start each. Trying to project kids this young at this level of pro ball is exceedingly difficult.

  4. Hoskins: K/BB: ’14: 54/21 (2.57). ’15: 99/55 (1.8). ’16: 125/71 (1.76). ’17: 28/28 (1.0). The guy seems to improve in every area of his game every year!

    Jesen Therrien. From 2015-2017: 144.1 ip, 107 h, 29 er, 47 bb, 165 k, 1.81 era, 1.07 whip, 3.51 K/BB. His consistency is impressive. Last year, Jim P wrote that he keeps his composure on the mound. His FB averages 95. Matt W has said his change-up is a weapon. Seems he should move up to AAA soon.

    2015 Draft. It was written recently that other than Kingery there was nothing else there. I’d suggest Falter and Fanti may continue to have something to say about that. And C too! These were high-schoolers two years ago.

    1. Matt, they (coaches and mgt) seem to be very particular about rhythm of scheduling side/bullpen sessions and regular rotation days. Routine is indigenous to baseball folk.

  7. Hoskins needs to come up in June. I get that Joseph has had a solid month but this guy is the future, even his bad games he still seems to get on base twice.

    1. That’s incredibly shortsighted. You need TJ to either fall off the face of the earth offensively or play his way into being a tradeable commodity so you can get something of value back for him.

      Why bench one of two guys hitting just so we can see if MAYBE Hoskins is better (and I do think he will be. Same power levels with a better obp).

      I would like to see them get him some reps in LF just to try it; play Perkins at 1st while rotating the outfielders between their positions and DH. This way, if they can’t move Joseph maybe they can get him everyday at bats at LF and see who handles MLB pitching better.

      It’s not fair for TJ to lose his job because the fan base wants to see Hoskins.

  8. To me, it is apparent that 1st base’s future lies in the person of Hoskins….who has hit and slugged his way up through the farm system seemingly with improvement at each stop along the way. He does have the potential of hitting at or above the .300 mark along with a high obp. With plaudits to TJ for coming back from obscurity to being a .250 hitter with power…but he never will match the oba, and higher batting average that Hoskins has shown throughout his pro career with HRs maybe similar. TJ will play himself into a trade situation later on…perhaps during the winter.

    Each here will have to admit that Hoskins has displayed the best hitting skills of anybody in the Phils minors incuding at the highest level at AAA. He could be a sprkplug at the center of the phils batting order…. That cannot be ignored. Bring him up at the end of June if not before…given the pathetic offense of the big club…where the two most relied upon guys, Hererra and Franco, have taken a dump at the plate.

  9. Crawford just missed a HR as it hit the wall but he hit it so hard that he could only get a base hit out of it. Really put a charge into it, Perkins was on 3rd after crushing on that they called a double and an error.

Why didn’t the Phillies sign Luis Roberts, they have all this money supposedly, and it would not prevent them buying a bunch a low cost dudes and using the theory of throwing things at the wall and see what sticks if any sticks, which is what they seem to be infatuated with for the last 10 years.
    And don’t tell me Ortiz. When did the Phillies ever go and buy more than one top ten kid, like the cubs, Yankees, redsox, braves, rangers, padres, dodgers etc etc?

  15. Mickey has a bruised rt hand. No break . Has had same injury in hs and needed about a week but was fine.
