Box Score Recap

Lehigh’s Adam Morgan picked up the win when he came on in relief in a game in which he had been scratched as the starter.  Ruf and Williams hit homers.  IronPigs tied for first in International League North Division.

Ricardo Pinto tossed a one-hitter for six innings, in a game the Phils eventually lost.

Zach Green and Josh Tobias had 3-hit nights in a losing effort for Clearwater.

Alberto Pinto and Damek Tomscha guided Lakewood into first place with a victory last night.

Ranger Suarez pitched Williamsport to another win in first game after no-hitter.

Nick Fanti had another scoreless outing in the GCL Phillies win.

Lehigh Valley (67-42)  Beat Scranton, 7-1.  James Russell (3.89) went 3.0 innings allowing a solo home run on 4 hits.  Adam Morgan (5-1, 3.24) took over and limited the RailRiders to 5 base runners over the final 6 innings, striking out six.  He also picked off a base runner. Nick Williams and Darin Ruf had 2 hits apiece.  Williams hit a 2-run HR (11), Ruf (.288) hit a solo HR (15), and Cedric Hunter (.292) hit a 3-run double.

  • #1 Crawford (.258) went 0-3 with a BB.
  • #3 Williams (.283) went 0-4 with an RBI.
  • #5 Thompson (11-5, 2.29) – 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP.
  • #11 Appel – DL, season-ending surgery to remove a bone spur.

Reading (71-37)  Lost to Bowie, 5-2.  Ricardo Pinto held the Baysox to 1 hit and 2 runs in 6.0 innings. He gave way to Jimmy Cordero who gave up 2 go-ahead runs in his one inning of work. Scott Kingery, KC Serna (.291), and Angelo Mora (.253) had 2 hits each. Kingery and Mora each had an RBI. Dylan Cozens whiffed 3 times in 4 AB. In all, the Phils K-ed 12 times.

  • #7 Cozens (.278) went 0-4 with 3 K.
  • #8 Quinn (.288) DL, oblique, rehabbing with the GCL Phillies.

Clearwater (63-43)  Lost to Fort Myers, 11-6.  Elniery Garcia had another rocky outing.  He couldn’t respond when a team mate committed an error on a play that would have ended the second inning, and gave up a 2-run single a couple batters later.  Later he set up another unearned run on his own throwing error.

Yacksel Rios turned a 4-run deficit into a 7-run hole.  When the Threshers closed to 8-6, Victor Arano couldn’t limit the damage after a Malquin Canelo, run-scoring error, and gave up 3 singles and 2 more runs before getting out of the inning.

The Threshers scored first on Canelo’s RBI single.  After their pitching an defense let them down, they closed to within two runs on Carlos Tocci’s RBI single, Josh Tobias’ sacrifice fly, another Canelo RBI single, Josh Tobias’ RBI single, and Jiandido Tromp’s RBI single.

Tobias (.478) and Zach Green (.262) had 3 hits each.  The Threshers had 14 hits, 12 of them singles and 2 doubles.  Tobias had 2 RBI.  Garcia picked a runner off base.  Sandberg picked up an outfield assist at second base that saved Rios additional damage in the fifth.

  • #22 Canelo (.247) went 2-4 with BB, and RBI.  He committed his 23rd error.

Lakewood (50-55)  Beat Greensboro, 2-1.  Alberto Tirado struck out 9 Grasshoppers in 5.0 innings of 1-run ball.  Jeff Singer (0.43) struck out 5 in 3.0 innings.  Sutter McLoughlin (2.94) picked up his 6th save.  Damek Tomscha provided all the offense with a 2-run home run in the third inning.

  • #27 Pujols (.223) went 0-4 with 2 K.

Williamsport (27-16)  Beat Mahoning Valley, 3-2. In his first start after his complete game one-hitter, Ranger Suarez had another strong effort.  He went 6.0 innings, gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out six.  Three relievers shutout the Scrappers the rest of the way with Julian Garner and Alexander Kline each striking out 2 in their inning, and Jake Kelzer picking up his third save.

The Crosscutters scored three first inning runs without a hit or RBI.  Their first 4 batters reached base and two scored on five errors by the Scrappers.  A double play brought home the third run.  Here’s the top of the first –

Evan Rogers had 2  of the Crosscutters’ 6 hits.  Scrappers’ pitchers struck out 13 batters. Arquimedes Gamboa left the game after a caught stealing in the third inning (left leg). Juan Luis was pulled after not running out a pop up.  Suarez picked off a runner at first base.

GCL Phillies (22-10) Beat the GCL Yankees East, 5-0.  Nick Fanti had another strong outing. He pitched five, two-hit, shutout innings, walked one, and struck out eight.  Rehabbing Jairo Munoz, Jordan Kurokawa, Andrew Brown, and Tyler Frohwirth completed the 4-hit shutout.

Roman Quinn played a complete game and went 2-3 with a SB and run scored.  Mickey Moniak stole 3 bases.  Jhailyn Ortiz stole his FOURTH base and had 2 RBI.

    2. He’s been dominant! I hope his promotion hasn’t been held back because other guys were drafted higher than him. Seems like every start he he has is more than a strikeout per inning and a WHIP under 1. Excited to see him move up the ranks very soon.

  2. The fact that Morgan was scratched could mean he was going to fill the Hellickson spot, if he was traded. That would have been a surprise to us minor league followers.

    Elniery Garcia has been running out of gas for a while now. Four of his last 5 starts have been less than stellar. The 5th was a spectacular 8 inning 1 hitter. He might have a little dead arm right now so they can have him pitch through it or possibly have him skip a start. He’s still 21 and he’s thrown 92 innings this year. He threw 120 last year so he can easily throw another 30 innings this year. Let’s see what the development staff decide.

    Yacksel Rios has taken a giant step backward this year. His name was being bandied about before the season as a breakout candidate but he’s failed at 2 levels this year. He needs to step back and figure out what’s different this year and fix it.

    Tirado has turned things around as a starter. In 26 IP, he’s given up 25 hits and 9 ERs. He’s struck out 36 to only 15 BBs. His 5 hit, 9 K outing yesterday was a great effort. He’s 21 so he should continue to grow as a starter and then move him one level per year. They were trying to move him fast as a reliever and that didn’t work so well. Slow down and allow him to work on some things as he progresses. He’ll get some consideration for # 30 on my top 30 list.

    Julian Garcia, the 10th round pick this year, has been settling in. In his last two outings, he’s given up 2 hits and no ERs in 3 innings. He was shooting himself in the foot by walking guys in his early outings but hopefully he’s straightened that out. He has 10 BBs in 14 IP. He had 8 of those BBs in a 3 game stretch where his ERA ballooned.

    As for Ranger Suarez let me just say, “Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!!”.

    Darick Hall, according to the boxscore has 9 errors. That’s a run maker and not a run saver at 1B. But when I drill down on his stats, it says he has 3 errors. What’s up with that? If nothing else, stats should be reliably totaled. They can lie like hell but adding should be an easy task.

    The two DSL teams have a total of 7 HRs in 98 games. 32 individual teams in the DSL have more than our 2 teams combined. 3 more DSL teams have 7 HRs individually. So out of 42 teams in the DSL, 35 teams have more than the Phil’s teams combined. The DSL1 teams is 3rd in SBs and 5th in CSs. It’s a team that loves to run because there aren’t any power hitters in the lineup. Jhailyn Ortiz, playing in the GCL, would probably be leading the DSL in HRs but he’s too busy ripping and running in the states.

I’m pretty sure the plan all along with Tirado was to have him go back to starting with the Phillies . . . he was a starter in the Blue Jays org. up until 2015; was also rated as a top 100 prospect going into the 2014 season but walks KILLED him in 2014 and he was transitioned to the bullpen. I believe even right after the trade Jordan said he was going to finish the year as a RP (no point in transitioning him with only 2 months left in the season) but then stretched out to start. If he can hardness his stuff (like he did last night) he can shoot back into prospect rankings and I don’t just mean our top 30. IMO the Revere trade could be one where people are asking, “Why would you give up those 2 arms for Ben Revere?” but that involves both Tirado and Cordero making a jump with their control.

    3. I believe that’s Chandler Hall that has 9 errors, not Darick. Chandler is learning to play two new positions at second and third while also being Gamboa’s backup at shortstop. With Gamboa getting hurt last night, my guess is we see a lot of Chabdler at short, which is his best defensive position.

One thing I think is important to note on MK’s performance yesterday is that I find it impressive that as a first year GM navigating his first trade deadline, that he didn’t feel obligated to do something. I think it says something about a) his self confidence but lack of an ego, and b) probably the steady influence provided by Andy MacPhail.

    I really believe keeping Ruiz was a wise move as he helps Rupp improve as a catcher and guides Nola, Eflin, Eickhoff, VV, and maybe Thompson through their early career ups and downs.

    As for Hellickson, I think the Phils hoped to have him and Morton healthy and to deal one and keep one as a steadying influence for the other pitchers.

    1. Andy McPhail is the real GM even if he does not have the title. For their strategy to work the Phillies have to pray that Jeremy Hellickson stays healthy and effective. Hellickson seems to want to stay but that creates other issues. Two of our best trade chips are injured so that was bad luck. I just think that the Phils were too conservative in obtaining talent as other sub .500 teams found a way to get talent and the Phillies did not.

      1. As for MacPhail being actual gm, I am impressed that he has mentored Klentak well enough that the two are essentially breathing the same air and thinking alike. I’m sure they’ve maintained a connection since their Baltimore days. I have no problem right now with the decision making process even though we’re all itching to see the rich new talent surface sooner than later.

            I am disappointed in MK’s not moving Hellickson.
            They claimed they wanted a ‘top five prospect’, major league ready plus another close to it.
            I ask why?
            1. Between LHV and Reading there are close to 10 major league ready players ETA NLT Sept 2017…and that is not counting the pitchers, that’s just positional players. So I would have asked for 2 or 3 10-15 range 19/20 year old players from a system’s A level. Keep the flow of the pipeline strong from the base.
            2. Keeping Hellickson is too risky..first the injury factor, then he is .a 7year 9WAR career pitcher who’s best years before this year were 4 and 5 years ago. He has been inconsistent.
            3. The QO issue…..odds he will refuse, but is there a market out there. Will a team be willing to surrender a pick to sign him long term. Cards signed Mike Leake….but no pick was lost.

            1. Honestly Romus I’m ok with it also. These things are so hard to evaluate for us because we are in a vacuum. We have no idea what MK was offered. And if the QO is still going to be in effect this off season where a compensation pick would be just fine.

              That said I believe I heard the QO will be around $16 million this year. I could see Hellboy taking that and then waiting to see what the new CBA looks like.

            4. Romus … I think you’re combining Klentak’s demands for Helickson and VV. It was reported he wanted a top five prospect for Hellboy. It was also reported he wanted that prospect to be a young, upside arm ( something similar to the Pivetta return they got for Papelbon last year. For Velasquez, they wanted two hitters … one ML ready, the other close to ML ready.

              In any event, I feel very confident he and Boras will pass on the QO and everybody will be happy to have three top-50 picks in a very good 2017 draft.

        2. 8mark, how is that other teams traded injured players but the Phillies could not? I would drive Cody Asche, Peter Bourgous and Jimmy Parades to the airport after their release/trade to make room for Nick Williams and other younger players.

          1. Can’t answer that, Phil. All I know is that after the previous regime’s ineptitude and over valuations of once productive players (and that wasn’t all Amaro’s doing), it’s refreshing to have a new (if imperfect) paradigm in place. The fact that they have a plan is alone encouraging.

          2. Depends on what the injury is and why that player is being traded. The Hamels trade included Harrison who was injured but he was included simply to offset the $$$.

            Teams don’t want an injured player like Bourgous because his only value is in being able to play the last 2 months of THIS year. If he misses a month due to the shoulder injury, he offers nothing to the trading team.

      2. Since none of us know what was offered for the various Phillies players, not sure how you can criticize Klentak for not making a move other than to assume that some good deal was there for the taking..

        My take is that the team is in a different situation now than it was 2 years ago in that their system is pretty strong with mid-level talent players who will probably be big league players but don’t appear to be all-star caliber players. They really don’t need to keep making deals to add more of those types of players.

        The focus now should be to either get top-50 caliber players (which they weren’t going to get for Hellickson) or to take a chance on a low-a level lottery ticket with some flaw in their game that might be overcome. Don’t know if that type of player(s) was offered.

        The upside gamble is that Hellickson rejects the QO and they get the sandwich pick. The only real downside is that he stinks up the place or gets injured over the last 2 months and they decide not make the QO and get nothing.

        If he pitches well enough for the rest of the season to get a QO and then accepts, the $17M contract is basically meaningless for a big market team with a committed payroll for 2017 of around $20 million. The Phillies have significant amounts of $$$ to work with. If he continues to pitch like he is now, we will have this same discussion in July 2017..

        1. I’m not criticizing anybody, I’m just asking a valid question. In my opinion, if Ruben Amaro was still the GM and he did nothing at the trade deadline, I think he would have been treated more harshly than Klentak. For me, they should have traded Hellickson. It’s too risky to ask for Hellboy to keep it going for 2 more months. And what’s going to happen with Jake Thompson? He’s ready for the bigs.

          1. oh, I agree that the reaction would have been different with Amaro but I wouldn’t have been one of those voices for the same reason. Just don’t know what the offer were.

            As for Thompson, if he has to wait in AAA for another 4 weeks I don’t think makes much difference.

        2. Agreed that getting mid level players is somewhat redundant. I have no idea what was offered but we do know which prospects WERE actually traded so I can assume those players were available so the question for me is could Phillies have gotten any of those players.

          I think they could have but may have needed to package players like Hellickson, Ruiz, and Gomez in addition to paying their salaries.

          Phillies waned a ‘ top 5’ prospect for Hellickson.
          Hellickson…as a 7year, 9WAR inconsistent past performer is not a one or two…..nor probably a three on any contender’s staff.
          He is neither a shut-down reliever in the mold of Chapman or Miller.
          So expecting a top five prospect, IMO, is unrealistic.
          A 10- 20 prospect, or two, at a low A level as 19-year olds would have been fine with me.
          Now….exact words from MK yesterday….we need to “balance the present with the future”.
          Ok the present I assume is Franco, Herrera, maybe Rupp and Joseph. The present, IMO, also includes now the AA/AAA nine positional prospects, (JPC,Knapp,Williams, Cozens, Hoskins, Kingery, Alfaro, Quinn, Valentin) all who’s ETA is probably 2017/first part 2018. I will not go into all the pitchers from Nola, VV, Eflin, Thompson, et al. since the Phillies wanted positional players in return for Hellickson.
          IMO…..the ‘future’ part of MK’s statement of balancing , would have been the return for Hellickson.

    3. Jim does these box score recaps in the wee hours of the morning. You’ll notice Williams was listed as having an 0’fer day but just above it, it said he hit a big HR. So Jim probably didn’t adjust a part of the recap. No harm… no foul.

  6. Does anyone have an idea what the plan for Thompson is? He could probably improve fastball/slider command, but he could pitch in the majors right now. I know Klentak said he would call up prospects, but someone is gonna get the short end of the stick right?

    1. Barring injury, I expect Thompson and a couple of other arms will be called up in September and their rotation will expand to 6-7 guys so that some of their young arms can be skipped in the rotation.

      1. In September I would expect an extended rotation or guys just shut down. I expect VV to be the first to be shelved. The guys in minors have thrown many innings as well.

        Certainly can just burn out Oberholtzer. Also Buchanan. And Asher. Still not sure why Hellickson was ‘needed’ to eat late season innings when these guys are available.

            Actually him and Kingery are the same age and drafted close to each in different years…Kingery at 48 and Valentin at 51. Plus he knows how to play the game being in the PR development program and being around major leaguers with his dad.
            But I think Kingery is the guy the Phillies want to start at 2nd base.

        It’s because Valentin is likely a weak-hitting utility player on a good major league team (and only if he can actually handle SS once a week) whereas Kingery projects as a first division regular at 2B with above average offensive abilities and is allegedly an above-average fielder (can’t say for myself because I’ve never seen him).

        It’s that simple. If you want to get into an argument again where we show you age versus level, and advanced stats, well someone else can take the reins this time because I already fought that battle with you once

      4. Well first off, i have zero respect for him as a man because he is a domestic abuser. I wish the team released him. As a player, hes fine, but he definitely seems to look like more of a utility guy than a starter. I believe he is likely Cesar Hernandez Jr.

        1. I’m not exactly sticking up for him nor do I know the story but domestic violence is a crazy animal. I’m in LE and I can tell you first hand that we’ve arrested people for DV that didn’t actually do anything. For example in our state (NJ), if we are called out to your house and your wife/gf/family member complains of pain (obviously inferring it was caused by someone), you are getting arrested, period . . . she could be making it up, court will decide that . . not us on the scene. Again I have no clue what he actually did or didn’t do.

          1. While trying to find info on the arrest I came upon this article about his promotion. I absolutely LOVE to hear the stories about players being told they are being promoted. Obviously the best is being promoted to the ML level however this is just as good . . .

            1. Oh neither do I. But you can also look at it his way, he isn’t a huge prospect so if it was that bad you’d think they would have released him. I believe it’s a zero policy w MLB so him being arrested would cause a suspension and we all know the Phillies don’t like to go against MLB. If anyone NASA y info on what he actually did please pass it on.

    1. Morgan was held back because rain was expected and they didn’t want to lose him to a rain delay. He was put in after the weather forecast improved.

      1. This is exactly correct. Brundage didn’t want to get Morgan warmed up for a game that might go into delay early on. There was no other reason or thought to not starting him.

  12. Attended the Lakewood game in Greenboro last night. A few notes.

    -Tirado was very sharp. The stadium gun seemed very slow and had Tirado is the 88-93 range. It seemed much faster than that as many Greenboro batters were swinging late even early in the count. In comparison, the Greensboro starter was throwing in the 85-88 range so I’m sure they were both throwing harder than the gun showed. I’m very encouraged.

    -C Randolph – I know it appears he went a pedestrian 1-4, but he smashed a ball opposite field to left-center. The center fielder reached over the fence on the run and robbed him of a HR. Just some tough luck for him. Overall, looked comfortable and in control at the plate.

    J Singer – who is this guy? Came out of nowhere. He was very much in control and dominated hitters. A few of the hitters resorted to trying to bunt to get on base. I know he is a little older for the league, but it’s time to move him up to his age appropriate level. Was throwing in the 89-93 range (again, on what looked like a slow gun). Singer has only given up 1 ER over 27.2 Innings – 0.33 ERA (36Ks/6BB). Best yet, he went to Rutgers-Camden like me!

    J Pujols – was not impressed. Lots of swings and misses.

    Damek Tomscha – I know this guy isn’t regarded as a prospect and is very old for the league, but I was impressed. Made three pretty difficult plays at 3b and his HR left the stadium.

    1. Matt W’s pitch tracker has Tirado and Singer both in the mid 90s this year, so would agree that gun may be 1-3 mphs slow. Matt also thinks Tirado will eventually go back to pen, which I get but if he keeps getting better it will be interesting. Following the Singer story is nuts… Anyone know why he went undrafted?

  14. Back to doing nothing at the deadline. I still do not understand how the Blue jays got Ramirez and McGuire for Drew Hutchinson because they are taking on Francisco Liriano’s 17M and the Phils could not have done that for Hellickson. Ramirez and McGuire are legitimate prospects, the money is meaningless as the payroll is so low for next year. Even Harrison’s last year of money is mostly covered by Insurance, and, instead, we are risking Hellickson’s injury, drop in performance, the QO inhibiting teams from bidding on him, and the uncertainty of whoever that 40-50 pick is in next year’s Draft.

DOZENS of stories out there of how he is a world class ***hole and thinks he is above the team. Don’t want him around our young guys at all.   15. Can someone give me a good explanation why CLW SS Canelo is #22 rated player in the system. I don’t think I have ever seen him play. He’s batting .247 this year and has committed 23 errors. Anyone’s insights would be appreciated. What is his future in this organization?

      Canelo has speed, good range and appears to be able to play small ball. He makes some really great plays defensively, but he does have his errors. I’ll be interested to see how he looks a year from now.

    3. @joe2 – think Canelo as the better version Galvis. He’s note going to be Top 100-200 prospect MLB wide but he has a good chance to be a Galvis or Blanco type career so that’s not bad for the considered at the bottom third of the Top 30.

    1. I was impressed when I saw him live for the 1st time this year. I was sitting 1st row next to the Lakewood dugout, he was standing right in front of me, he’s got that tall lanky frame but should be very interesting to see how he does assuming he adds some mass to that that frame.

  17. Attended my last Thresher’s game last night to complete my personal four-game sweep of the Ft Myers series.

    I continue to be impressed by what Tocci and Tobias do to move the offense along. Not flashy, but contributing — sacrifice fly, singles when needed, moving runners.

    I’m not so sure about Tobias defensively, or if he has a position assuming Kingery is the 2B of the future.

    I mentioned earlier about Victor Arano being the luckiest reliever alive on Friday when he got hit hard by four straight batters but was lucky that three of their struck balls found outfielders.

    His luck ran out Monday. The hard-struck balls found holes and Arano’s line looked as deservedly ugly as his Friday line looked undeservedly clean.

    Mitch Walding had a terrible night. Several strikeouts in key situations. Oh for 5. And dropped a two-out pop up and a run later scored. Hopefully, he bounces back.

    Finally, on the Luis Ramirez front. The 18-year-old RHP in the DSL finally met reality in his 17th appearance: 3 hits and a BB in two-thirds of an inning. Three runs scored. But not earned. His ERA remains 0.00 after 18 innings.

    1. Looks like Green had a decent series vs Fort Meyers. What were your observations? I don’t recall where I saw it, but read somewhere he was having some back issues?

        This was the first time I’ve seen Green in person. I was impressed with him physically. A sturdy but athletic build. He looks like a power hitter. His home run was a cannon shot to left field. Likewise his opposite field double last night.

        Having said that, I’m not sure how much future he can have at 1B given he is a RHP at a position that values lefties and hitters with perhaps more power.

        I don’t know what the scouting grades are on him. I’d be interested in where he’s graded for power.

  19. With Mickey Mo, it is amazing his consistency… Hit in 6 straight and 13 of the last 14 games, batting .360 (19-for-53) with 3 doubles, 3 triples and 14 RBIs. He rarely goes a game without doing something productive.

    I’d be curious to know about his contact and how hard he is hitting the ball.

    Also, can someone explain (briefly) what wRC+ is? Thanks!
