Around the System–Outfield

Lehigh Valley

Cedric Hunter, 28, SIgned as free agent in 2016; .292/.328/.425 in 233AB; 6HR 35RBI; 6/9SB; 5%BB/15%K; .274 vs LHP; .309 vs RHP; .209 in July; 52 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist; Hunter, while struggling a bit as of late has played well for Lehigh Valley consistently hitting the ball hard while seeing most of his time in RF.

David Lough, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2016; .292/.364/.406 in 96AB for Lehigh Valley; 1HR 8RBI; 1SB; 9%BB/10%K; .217 vs LHP; .315 vs RHP; .283 last 30 days; 28 games in the OF with 1 error (.982); 2 OF assists; Lough recently spent some time on the DL but has played well for Lehigh Valley.  He is a fundamentally sound AAAA player.

Cam Perkins, 25, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .294/.327/.446 in 269AB; 7HR 31RBI; 7SB; 5%BB/16%K; .351 vs LHP; .253 vs RHP; .340 in July; 66 games in the OF with 5 errors (.969); 2 OF assists; Perkins has put up solid numbers all year.  While not in line to start in the majors, he could fit well as a 4th or 5th OF.

Nick WIlliams, 22, Acquired from Texas in 2015; .289/.323/.466 in 350AB; 9HR 47RBI; 5/9SB; 5%BB/24%K; .261 vs LHP; .303 vs RHP; .291 in July; Williams has been playing well and has been very consistent after a slow first month or so of the year.  In the long term, you would like to see the walk rate tick up and strikeout rate tick down with additional work on the basepaths needed.

Reading

Osmel Aguila, 27, Signed as a free agent in 2016; .214/.317/.388 in 103AB between CLearwater and Reading; 3HR 12RBI; 1SB; 10%BB/19%K; .190 vs LHP; .243 vs RHP; .256 in July; 32 games in the OF with 1 error (.983); 1 OF assist. Largely unimpressive since his signing in May.

Dylan Cozens, 22, Phils 2nd round pick in 2012; .286/.373/.586 in 353AB; 25HR 82RBI; 17/18SB; 12%BB/29%K; .200 vs LHP; .309 vs RHP; .307 last 30 days; .315 with 20HR 54RBI at home; .262 with 5HR 28RBI on the road; 88 games in the OF with 3 errors (.983); 8 OF assists; Cozens overall body of work is outstanding however there is absolutely something to be said for the First Energy stadium effect by looking at the numbers.  Away from home, Cozens become a very average player.  Time will tell where he actually lands.

Christian Marrero, 29, Signed as a free agent in 2016; .219/.353/.398 in 128AB; 6HR 20RBI; 17%BB/19%K; .200 vs LHP; .222 vs RHP; .292 in July; 32 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist; 9 games at 1B with 1 error (.984); Marrero has hit into some hard luck this year.  Although a very low average, he has gotten on base regularly and provided some pop.

Andrew Pullin, 22, Phils 5th round pick in 2012; .317/.359/.514 in 208AB between CLearwater and Reading; 8HR 36RBI; 5%BB/14%K; Has hit .377 in 61 AB for Reading; 46 games in the OF without an error; 4 OF assists; After missing the first part of the season due to personal issues, Pullin has come on very strong this season.  Still only 22, Pullin does not seem to get much recognition but has really produced the last two seasons.

DL: Aaron Brown (24, Phils 3rd rd pick, ’14) and Roman Quinn (23, Phils 2nd rd pick, ’11). Quinn has now missed 5 weeks.

Clearwater

Herlis Rodriguez, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .222/.286/.256 in 90AB; 0HR 9RBI; 3SB; 5%BB/15%K; .174 vs LHP; .239 vs RHP; 30 games in the OF with 1 error (.984); 1 OF assist; After a very good year last year, Rodriguez has had an injury plagues season this season where he cant seem to get going.

Cord Sandberg, 21, Phils 3rd round pick in 2013; .226/.304/.314 in 274AB; 4HR 20RBI; 6/13SB; 8%BB/27%K; .159 vs LHP; .246 vs RHP; .211 in July; .167 with RISP; 82 games in the OF with 1 error (.993); 3 OF assists; A very poor, disappointing season thus far for Sandberg.  He has shown very little.

Carlos Tocci, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .277/.332/.347; 2HR 35RBI; 11/17SB; 7%BB/14%K; .222 vs LHP; .298 vs RHP; .304 last 30 days; 88 games in the OF with 2 errors (.991); 8 OF assists; Decent season thus far for Tocci who continues to play an excellent CF.  Hard to believe he is still only 20.

Jiandido Tromp, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .256/.312/.485 in 324AB between Lakewood and CLearwater; 14HR 44RBI; 12/15SB; 8%BB/21%K; FOr Clearwater: .205/.244/.422 in 83AB; 4HR 12RBI; 82 games in the OF with 1 error (.995); 7 OF assists; Alot of raw talent for Tromp who has had some of the typical troubles adjusting up a level.

Derek Campbell, 25, Phils 20th round pick in 2014; .295/.390/.566 in 122AB; 8HR 20RBI; 8%BB/20%K; .294 vs LHP; .295 vs RHP; .304 last 30 days; 7 games at 3B with 2 errors (.867)25 games in the OF without an error; 6 games at 2B with 1 error (.950); After missing the first part of the season injured, Campbell has played extremely well, wherever he has been asked to play.

Lakewood

Zach Coppola, 22, Phils 13th round pick in 2015; .324/.400/.358 in 176AB; 0HR 12RBI; 11SB; 11%BB/10%K; .333 vs LHP; .321 vs RHP; .284 last 30 days; 38 games in the OF with 1 error (.983); 4 OF assists; Revere-like numbers for Coppola.  That said, Revere ended up being a productive major leaguer.

Carlos Duran, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .254/.285/.316 in 209AB; 1HR 20RBI; 10SB; 5%BB/25%K; .250 vs LHP; .255 vs RHP; .267 last 30 days; 53 games in the OF with 1 error (.993); 5 OF assists; Fairly pedestrian numbers for Duran who shows occasional flashes, but is striking out too much for a guy who lacks power.

Jose Pujols, 20, SIgned as a free agent in 2012; .229/.286/.429 in 340AB; 17HR 57RBI; 5/8SB; 7%BB/37%K; .267 vs LHP; .216 vs RHP; .217 last 30 days; 79 games in the OF with 6 errors (.963); 7 OF assists; Tons of raw power but strikeout numbers that are Kingmanesque.  Troubles in the field as well, although showing his good arm.

Cornelius Randolph, 19, Phils 1st round pick in 2015; .250/.327/.323 in 96AB; 1HR 5RBI; 4SB; 8%BB/24%K; .300 vs LHP; .237 vs RHP; 21 games in the OF with 2 errors (.953); Randolph missed a considerable amount of time injured and has struggled to produce.

Williamsport

Jesus Alastre, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2013; .412/.453/.441 in 68AB between GCL and WIlliamsport; 0HR 13RBI; 5SB; 4%BB/12%K; 17 games in the OF with 2 errors (.882); 1OF assist.

Juan Luis, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .261/.325/.435; 3HR 11RBI; 5SB; 8%BB/12%K; 23 games in the OF with 2 errors (.953); Luis has shown a little of everything through the early going.

Luke Maglich, 23, Phils 34th round pick in 2016; .234/.333/.375 in 64AB; 1HR 10RBI; 2/6SB; 12%BB/26%K; 18 games in the OF without an error.

David Martinelli, 21, Phils 6th round pick in 2016; .247/.291/.392 in 97AB; 3HR 11RBI; 4/8SB; 6%BB/18%K; .280 vs LHP; .236 vs RHP; 22 games in the OF with 1 error (.977). Fairly high expectations for Martinelli who has shown glimpses early on.

GCL

Malvin Matos, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .290/.405/.449 in 69AB; 1HR 8RBI; 6SB; 12%BB/15%K. 19 games in the OF with 1 error (.969)

Mickey Moniak, 18, Phils 1st round pick in 2016; .324/.382/.412 in 68AB; 1HR 16RBI; 3/6SB; 6%BB/18%K; 11 games in the OF with 1 error (.960). So far, so good.

Jhalyn Ortiz, 17, Signed as a free agent in 2015; .312/.404/.623 in 77AB; 6HR 17RBI; 2SB; 8%BB/25%K; .421 vs LHP; .276 vs RHP; 12 games in the OF with 3 errors (.893); Has been very impressive with the bat

Josh Stephan, 18, Phils 11th round pick in 2016; .286/.394/.464 in 56AB; 1HR 14RBI; 1SB; Stephen is a guy I really like. 13 games in the OF with 2 errors (.909)

  1. “Decent season thus far for Tocci…”

I’d say a tick or two better than decent. I’ve never been the biggest fan of him, but I’m starting to come around.

For a 20 year-old in High A, with good defense, I’ll take those numbers.

    1. I’m out on him, too many singles, too few stolen bases. Nice year but I’m not optimistic

  2. Gregg, you were very harsh on Dylan Cozens who is a big weapon even if he is platooned against LHP. He was the best player for Reading in the Trenton series and the team struggles without him in the lineup.

    1. Come on man, he was just tempering expectations a bit and advising people not to go by sheer numbers. The friendly confines of Reading have made guys like Rizzotti, Ruff, Jim Murphy, heck even Gene Schall and Jon Zuber look like future stars. Hes not saying Cozens stinks or doesnt have great raw power. He’s just including an asterisk that 100% deseves to be there.

  3. Excellent report Greg. I didn’t think you were tough on Cozens at all. The numbers are what they are and until a kid makes it in the MLB there are always red flags to debate.

None of these reports are static they can always change one way or the other. A lesson we should all heed. Lesser kids have gone on to be all stars and greater kids have gone on to wash out of the league.

  4. Does anyone have info on Greg Pickett’s injury ??? What’s ailing him and when will he return to action ? I’ve been looking forward to following him. He’s supposed to have excellent raw power.

  5. I keep seeing bits and pieces on this site about Malvin Matos. Does anyone have any solid information on him that matches some of the enthusiasm? One thing I see looking at the stats is the walks, not normal for international players.

    1. Joe Jordan went out of his way to rave about Matos so I would say that is a pretty good reason to sit up and pay attention to his career as it progresses.

      1. DMAR….he must be a late bloomer..it looks like the Phillies signed him as an 18-year old….unless he was another Edubray Ramos type player, and was signed at 16 by another org an then released, as the Cardinals did with Edubray..

        1. That is very interesting Romus. A little luster off his star that he is 19 but otherwise so far so good!

          1. DMAR….he is the excerpt from Mitch Rupert’s interview with Joe Jordan afew weeks ago, and he mentioned Malvin Matos:
            ———————————————————————————————
Q: Lastly, what do you think of the stuff you’re hearing about Mickey Moniak and his first week down in the GCL?

A: It’s been good. I think we’ve got such a healthy situation down there. Mickey being this year’s first overall pick gets a lot of the attention. But Jhailyn is doing terrific in right field and swinging the bat. A kid by the name of (Malvin) Matos is also out there with (Josh) Stephen. So we have four really good, talented – I mean Matos is a hell of a player. Wait until you see him here next year. But Mickey’s real comfortable, I think, with the spotlight. Again, he’s a ballplayer. He just likes to be out there. I just got to see him for three days and meet him, and I’m looking forward to getting back down there.

And here’s the comment on Malvin Matos …

    1. DMAR…I think the one star fairy is rocco…..I think he has a dyslexic keyboard….and he thinks he is hitting 5-stars.

      1. Two dyslexic guys were riding in a car.
One turned to the other and said, “Can you smell petrol?”
The other replied, “Don’t be a moron, I can’t even smell my own name!”

            1. rocco…..not implying that, my apology if it posted like that….however, Stephen was rated to have a good bat coming out of HS with his ride to USC in hand, and like I mentioned earlier, he was rated third in Calif among HS hitters behind Moniak and Rutherford.

  6. not ripping the guy at all, but what are the odds at this time next year Cord Sandberg is getting ready to play quarterback in college somewhere?
With the signing bonuses, is there is years of service requirement that would need to be fulfilled before he could walk away and go play QB?

    Like

    1. Pretty sure it is after 3 seasons where the potential obligation to repay signing bonus goes away. I think it is a standard clause in the minor league player contract.

  7. If Matos is as good as what JJ said he is and if Picket will be the LH version of Ortiz — the 2016 GCL OF crew will be talked about for a while.

  8. .151 .211 that’s Joey Gallo against LHP the last 2 yrs. He basically stop stealing bases 2 yrs ago. .200 .255.247 .243 that’s Cozens against LHP the last couple of yrs. Cozens .ops at home 1.213 away .743 not bad . There both very young for there league Cozens 2.4 Gallo 3.4 . Cozens had a total of 17 atbats against younger pitchers .He has an .984 and a .604 slg against older pitchers. His avg was .278 against LHP earlier it went as low as .181 now it’s .200 . I really don’t think he repeats Reading . The Funny thing isn’t CBP a home Runs hitter ‘ s park.

    1. Tim…it is not unusual for power minor leaguer LHBs to hit poorly vs LHPs. That aspect seems to be the mantra when discussing Cozens’ projectable going forward.
Might as well get use to it.
When Gallo is bumped against Cozens……Gallo does have the higher K rate in the 30 plus percent area…then again he is better in the BB rate, so…..

      1. I feel bad for that kid Bundy for the orioles. I saw pitch and though he would be special. Nothing but injuries so far. Now tj surgery. shame. I kind of realize why our gm is set on loading up on arms. Romus I was joking with you. I Could never get mad at you. Your the only guy on here who is older than me.

And now O’s Hunter Harvey needs TJ…..maybe Klentak can get both Bundy and Harvey for Hellickson. Now talk about risk….on both sides there.
It is really mind-boggling how many high velo arms are needing TJ…especially a lot of HSers.

          1. Maxium effort pitching throwing the as hard as you can aka all your might . Your elbow is not made for so young. Even ADULTS are having problems plus bone spurs now .know what there from excessive fiction of joints now he all get bone spurs . The pitchers shouldn’t get it at 23 yrs old. The Gm’s are notice too a couple yrs after TJ the shoulder goes . The Angels lost 3 young pitches this yr. The Dodgers 4 pitchers on there staff and so on . There used to be 300 ing and 300 k pitchers. Who have the stronger arm them or the pitcher’s now who can just barely hit 200 ings.

      2. I know but history says a lot too Cozen could easily come back and hit .250 against this yr. Plus he’s hitting against older pitchers which is good too. Gallo numbers against lefties where never brought up. I know about power hitting I’m ok with his splits some are not . I ALWAYS SAID HE CAN HIT HR out of any park. I think Eric LongenHagen had the best report .
