  1. Galvis was 2 – 3 in the first game. In the 2nd game, he batted 2nd and had a hit in 4 trips. Overbeck goes 3 – 3 with a HR. He’s up to .246. Brown is hitting .129 in his last 10 games but has a .349 OBP. Claypool 7 IP, 3 H 0 ER and 6 Ks. Sarchastic note of the day: the DSL Phils pitchers were great. They gave up 18 runs on 16 hits. ERAs skyrocketed in that game.

  2. repost just because
I don’t doubt that you Galvis doubter are having doubts.

    1. Oh I still have doubts. Do I need to rehash the sample size argument our should we just assume that Galvis is a much better hitter than is Brown?

  3. A nice two week rest for Hamels would allow a promotion by Aumont or Scwimmer.

  4. Overbeck producing like he did last year…a bit cold when he hit Reading for a couple months, then really turned it on at the end of the year.

    1. Overbeck has shown that on every level he has started slowly; then warmed up to a decent prospect. I don’t know that he will have that luxury at the next level. They give Brown the benefit of learning slowly. I wonder if Overbeck gets the chance. I think he would be worth it, but major leaguers must be able to catch the ball. He doesn’t do that as well (see Duran in Lakewood, another error that cost the game).

  5. DSL- who was that on here talking up Ranfi Casamiro before. 6’8 and been bombed before like the game in question. Still around a Strikeout per inning, though, opponents batting .154. Maybe Instructional League in a couple of weeks.
GCL- seems to me that the first 3 pitchers, Steven Inch, Luis Gonzalez, and Jonathon Musser have been used in some combination before, and got bombed like yesterday. Inch and Musser , the hailed draft signings of seasons past.
LKW- Bill Rice to LF, Zach Collier to CF, Miguel Alvarez to RF, Anthony Hewitt to DH. Does this continue and nobody up from WPT? Didn’t check the transactions yet. Good game for Claypool.
LVIP- Galvis moved to 2nd in Batting Order and at .313. Working out for the season so far, including the RDG stuff. 1 IP for Juan Perez with 3 K, some clutter with it.
Barfield at 2B with Thompson in CF, Frandsen on bench. Could this be the makings of a platoon of sorts with This used against RHP’s and Frandsen at 2B, Barfield in CF, and Thompson on bench against LHP’s?

    1. I’ve wondered the same thing, except there’s actually not much difference in how they (Barfield / Thompson) are doing against lefties. Barfield is .265 while Thompson is .252……. when you factor in SB + defense, I think I’d stick with Thompson unless he needs a night off.

    2. South Jersey walk-on Bill Rice seems to have more upside then Anthony Hewitt these days. Joe Berkery, philly.com claims he has a ‘wicked’ bat–whatever that means.

        1. It said wicked bat speed when I read it but it could have been edited after Ron saw it. Would love to see a local kid signed after an open tryout have some success.

      1. I just saw that article and it says he has wicked bat speed. Could have been edited between the time you and I read it? It would be a great story if Rice could acheive some level of success being a local guy who was signed after an open tryout.

        1. sammy/BostonPhan—….thanks —you are correct—‘wicked bat speed’. And also would be great for local guy to make it.

    1. Must remain calm. Must not get over-excited about Galvis. Must remind myself he likely will not be good enough to be an everyday SS for the Phils…

      1. Agree…………but it’s been fun so far. (better than I expected). Often luck and timing play big roles in advancement………….. seems like he’s in a good spot right now. Hope he enjoys the ride.

  8. As one of the great Hair Bands of the late 80’s once said “give me something to believe in” as it pertains to life after JRoll. What a tough call for RAJ but the market will dictate what happens there. Galvis is doing what he needs to do and that’s not to say I believe he is ready next year to step in.

  9. Not sure where else this would be posted but a comparison of Galvis/Rollins in their minor league careers would be very interesting. (not projecting similar mlb #’s but this is what i love about prospects)

      1. It should be noted that prior to that year Rollin’s was a lot better than Galvis as a hitter, Rollins had a sick year in AAA the next season, and the one year age difference is somewhat signficant. On a minor league career basis Rollins was a lot better as a hitter.

That said, I like Galvis a lot & the comp, even considering the above, is encouraging.

  10. if rollins walks and galvis is the shortstop then i hope they sign a big hitting leftfielder to get us the offense we lose with jimmy departure.

      1. It’s really wierd how a signfiicant portion of the fan base has soured on Brown.

People give me grief around here for percieved arrogance, but really, am I seriously supposed to respect the opinions of the Brown haters? Sorry I don’t and won’t pretend that I do.

        1. Agreed. I think that in the case of some of the more overheated comments (not necessarily on this blog, but over at Philly.com, I can’t help but think his race plays a role. Doesn’t hustle/not a smart player/nothing but raw athleticism, etc. Meanwhile, a lot of the same people seem to be angrily questioning why the Phillies won’t give Matt Rizzotti or Derek Mitchell or Cody Overbeck a shot.

          1. PS, this kind of fan base vitriol is exactly the reason why the absolute worst thing we could do with a long-term project like Freddy Galvis is let Jimmy Rollins walk and anoint him the shortstop-prospect-in-waiting. Being forced to step into Werth’s role put Brown in a horrendous situation.

  11. plan for 2012:
    let rollins and madsen walk..
    plug in Aumont and Galvis.
get compensatory picks. sign the players. win.

    1. No chance that a team with World Series aspiratons hands the starting shortstop job to a rookie. If Rollins walks, we’re going to end up with a year or two of someone like Alex Gonzalez or Rafael Furcal. The best thing for the Phils and for Freddy Galvis would be to resign Rollins for three years.

  12. NL Shortstops this season: .260/.314/.371

The bar has fallen incredibly low for infielders as far as offense. All middle infield positions have sub .700 OPS’s this year.

I think it is wishful thinking to look at Freddy Galvis as an option for 2012. The Phillies will seek a stopgap. But 2013 certainly. It will not take much hitting for Galvis to be a solid everyday shortstop in this era. And given Galvis’ hitting in Reading this year at age 21, it’s attainable.

  13. Saw this in KLaw’s last chat:
Best up-and-coming LHP– Erlin(SD), Surkamp(SF), Biddle(PHI), Minor(Atl)?? ON stuff, not where they are in being MLB ready. Thanks as always.
    Klaw
Best stuff there is Biddle. Minor is obviously the most ready.
That’s good to hear considering KLaw is a tough evaluator of talent and he’s been very high on Minor, plus he hasn’t always thought highly of our prospects.

    Good start for Garrett Claypool.
Galvis hits, and a great game for Overbeck.

    1. I’m guessing someone already on the 40 man. Carpenter or Mathieson. Especially with Hamels missing a start need pitching. The Phils are still talking both Contreras and Blanton pitching this year. That means we can’t use their spot for the 60 day DL.

  15. Tyler Greene’s athleticism already makes him a very intriguing prospect, so its very exciting when he shows baseball acumen.(2 BBs) :

After losing perhaps our two highest ceiling position prospects in Singleton and Santana, its great to see an influx of new players who can wield a bat.
