2. GCL, 3. Williamsport

Sorry for the lack of updates. I had been having some computer troubles that I finally got resolved. I’m sure you’ve all been faithfully following along the last few weeks so I’ll recap Williamsport’s last two weeks and the past week for GCL.

Williamsport: 30-21, 2nd Place, 3 GB in the Pinckney Division

Mahoning Valley defeats Williamsport 8-7

Leandro Castro led the offense with a 4/5 night including 2 2B, 2 RBI and 2 R. Jeremy Barnes had a 2B, 3B, BB and 2 RBI. Valle was 2/5 with a 2B, RBI and 2 R. Lebron went 4.1 IP, allowing 4 ER on 6 H and 2 BB while striking out 3. Long took the loss with a terrible 1.2 IP, allowing 4 ER on 2 H and 7 BB.

Williamsport defeats Jamestown 2-1

Castro again paced the offense with a 3/4 night that included a HR and a BB. Roy Uhl had two hits and a BB as well. Korey Noles allowed an unearned run in 6 IP on only 1 H. He struck out 5 and didn’t walk a batter. Austin Hyatt continued his impressive summer with 3 K in 2 IP to pick up the win.

Williamsport defeats Jamestown 4-1

Castro was 2/4 with a R and Hewitt went 2/4 with a 2B. Darin Ruf was 2/4 with an RBI and 2 R. Nick Hernandez got the win by going 6 scoreless on 4 H and 2 BB while striking out 3.

Batavia defeats Williamsport 2-1

Zach Collier went 2/3 with a 2B. Barnes was also 2/3 with a 3B and a R while Hewitt went 1/3 with an RBI. Matt Way was the hard luck loser in his final game for the Cutters. He gave up 2 R (1 ER) on 5 H and 2 BB in 6 IP. He struck out 11.

Williamsport defeats Batavia 4-0

Francisco Murillo was 2/2 with a BB, HR and 3 RBI. Barnes was 1/3 with an RBI and a R while Collier and Castro also added a 2B and a R each. Zeid had another solid outing going 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 H and a BB while striking out 9.

Williamsport defeats Jamestown 7-3

Castro was 3/5 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Collier was 2/5 with an RBI, SB and a R while Buschini added a 3B and 2 RBI in 5 ABs. Lebron got the win by giving up 3 R (2 ER) in 6 IP. He allowed 9 H and struck out 6 without walking a batter. Hyatt pitched 3 perfect innings with 6 Ks for his 6th save of the year.

Williamsport defeats Jamestown 6-3

The offense was supplied by David Doss on this night. He went 2/4 with a 2B, HR, 5 RBI and 2 R. Buschini went 2/4 with a 2B and 2 R. Noles allowed 1 ER on 3 H and 2 BB in 5 IP. He struck out 5. Eric Massingham struck out 6 in his 2.2 innings of work for his third save.

Wiliamsport defeats Batavia 9-4

Valle was 3/5 with a 3B, 4RBI and a R. Collier was 3/4 with a BB, HR (first as a pro) and 4 R.  Castro was 2/5 with a 2B, 2 RBI and 2 R. Hernandez allowed 1 ER on 5 H and 2 BB in 7 IP. He struck out 3.

Batavia defeats Williamsport 9-4

Castro was 1/4 with a 2B, RBI and R. Ruf was 1/3 with a HR and BB. Arroyo allowed 5 ER on 4 BB and 4 H in 4 IP. He struck out 3. Lugo and Grieve gave up 4 ER in 4 IP of relief.

Williamsport defeats Staten Island 20-4

Collier was 4/6 with a 3B, 4 RBI and 2 R. Uhl was 3/6 with 3 3B, 3 RBI and 3 R. Castro was 2/4 with a 3B, 3 RBI and 2 R. Hewitt was 3/5 with a 3B, HR, 3 RBI and 3 R and Valle added a 2B and 2 RBI. Zeid didn’t need all that offense as he pitched 6 scoreless innings. He allowed 4 H and a BB to go along with 5 K.

Staten Island defeats Williamsport 11-8

Barnes was 4/5 with a 2B and 2 R. Castro was 2/5 with 2 RBI. Hewitt was 2/5 with a HR, 2 RBI and 2 RBI while Ruf went 4/5 with 2 2B, an RBI and 2 R. Lebron gave up 6 R (5 ER) on 8 H in 1.1 IP. Chad Poe gave up 4 ER in his 2 innings of work.

Williamsport defeats Staten Island 2-1

Dabbs was 3/4 with a HR, RBI and 2 R. BArnes, Ruf and Collier each added 2 H. Hyatt was simply dominating in his start. He allowed 2 H over 5 scoreless innings. He walked 1 and struck out 9. Massingham picked up the win in relief. He struck out 3 over 2 IP.

Tri-City defeats Williamsport 6-2

Collier was 2/4 with a 2B and 2 R. Castro was 1/4 with a 2B and an RBI. Noles gave up 5 R (4 ER) on 5 H and 2 BB in 4.1 IP. He struck out 5.

Williamsport defeats Tri-City 6-2

Castro was 1/2 with 2 BB, an RBI and 2 R. Schoenberger was 2/3 with a BB, 2B, RBI and 2 R. Barnes was 1/4 with a 2B and an RBI while Collier was 1/5 with a 2B and a R. Hernandez allowed 1 unearned run in 6.2 IP. He allowed  5 H and a BB while striking out 3.

Williamsport defeats Tri-City 6-2

Buschini was 3/4 with a HR, 3 RBI and 2 R. Castro was 2/4 with a HR and 2 RBI while Hewitt was also 2/4 with a HR. Uhl was 1/3 with a 3B and a R. Zeid gave up 2 R (1 ER) on 5 H in 7 IP. He struck out 7.

 

GCL Phillies: 24-17, 1st Place, 1/2 GU in the North Division

Yankees defeat Phillies 8-3

Villar was 1/3 with a 3B, BB, RBI and R. Gump was 1/2 with a 2B. Sasaki gave up 3 ER on 4 H and 3 B in 4 IP. He struck out 3. Cosart pitched two perfect innings with 1 K.

Braves defeat Phillies 4-3

Dugan was 1/2 with a R. McConnell was 1/3 and Singleton knocked in a run despite going hitless. Julio Rodriguez gave up 4 ER on 6 H and 2 BB in 5 IP. He struck out 3.

Philles defeat Braves 4-2

Dugan was 3/3 with 2 BB, 2 2B, an RBI and a R. Villar was 2/3 with a BB and R. Santana was 1/4 and Altherr was 1/3 with a BB. Julian Sampson gave up an ER on 4 H and 2 BB in 3 IP. He struck out 1. Van Steensel gave up a H and struck out 1 in 2 IP for the win.

Phillies defeat Tigers 7-3

Singleton was 2/3 with a BB, HR, 2 RBI and 2 R. Santana was 1/4 with an RBI. Gump was 1/3 with a BB and 2 R while Dugan went 1/5. Angelle gave up 2 ER on 5 H and 2 BB in 4 IP. He struck out 4.

Tigers defeat Phillies 2-0

Singleton was 1/4 and Santana was 2/3 with a 2B on a slow day for the offense. Cosart gave up 1 ER on 2 H and 3 BB in 4 IP. He struck out 3.

Phillies defeat Blue Jays 3-2

Villar was 1/3 with a 2B, RBI and R. Singleton was 1/4 with a R while Dugan went 0/3 with a BB. Sasaki pitched 5 scoreless innings. He allowed 4 H and struck out 5 while not walking a batter.

Phillies defeat Blue Jays 6-3

Gump was 2/5 with a 2B, RBI and R. Singleton went 1/3 with a R. Hissey was 2/3 with an RBI and a R while Altherr went 1/2. Julio Rodriguez went 5 IP, giving up 2 ER on on 3 H and 4 BB while striking out 5.

  1. Speaks well of the scouting and field staffs to have the GCL Phils with a 1/2 game lead in the North division in the rookie league and the Cutters leading in the wild card race in the NY-Penn. Lakewood already has a playoff spot locked up in the Sally and Reading is still holding a second place playoff spot in the Eastern League. The final four weeks of the minor league season will help decide which farmhands are considered prospects and get invited to the Arizona Fall and the Florida Instructional Leagues.

  6. austin hyatt is putting up absurd numbers, zeid is also been pretty dominant, these guys dont belong in williamsport anymore, also matt way tonight 7ip 3 hits 0er 11k’s.

  7. From what I’ve found online on Austin Hyatt sounds like he’s a pitch-ability guy, average stuff, great control, and a good mound presence. He has obscene numbers so far, I’d be interesting to see him in person myself.

    Zeid interests me a bit as well. He was a big prospect, decided he wanted to go to college and has had a poor college career. I read that his velocity was in the 92-94 range as a starter so he definitely interests me going forward.

    You’re right about Massingham putting up some impressive numbers. Granted, he’s 22 and should be dominating the NY-Penn league, but only allowing one earned run in 20 innings is eye-opening. His walks are a tad high (7 in 20IP) but that’s probably nitpicking. He could be a decent workhorse reliever. I don’t know if they’ll move him to Lakewood or not, but I’d expect him to start in Clearwater next year and we’ll see if we got ourselves a prospect or not.

  11. The Phillies seem to be having some really good success with drafting college players. Its a smart way to go because college pitchers are more likely to be past arm troubles than high school kids. Making them get to the majors faster. Some of these new guys in the last year or two could make a break for the bullpen on the big club in the next year or two. Though I think Id leave Matt Way as a starter all the way through. This also shows the benefit of getting signed early after being drafted and jumping right in there and playing. I think Hyatt, Way, and Zeid among others got a jump on some other first year pro’s by signing early and getting right back into their normal seasonal routine and not missing a beat.

    All I know is that Rice has a terrible reputation for its pitchers…other than that I am completely ignorant to most aspects of college baseball.

  16. Without a doubt, Joe Savery would’ve been much better off turning pro after high school. He probably would’ve been a #3 starter in a major league rotation by now. Savery was a completely different pitcher before tearing his labrum, an injury that can be directly attributed to Wayne Graham’s irresponsible handling of him at Rice.

    Savery was the key player in Rice’s quest to win a national championship. As a true freshman, Savery was Rice’s opening day starter and staff workhorse. Baseball America named him NCAA freshman of the year in 2005, after he had the highest batting average and 2nd lowest ERA in his conference.

    Rice’s coaches were trying to win ballgames; they weren’t worried about Savery’s major league career. If anything, Graham was trying to get the most out of his blue chip recruit before he turned pro. I remember not being impressed by Savery’s pitching in the CWS after the Phillies selected him, but that was because he was pitching hurt.

    As a freshman, Savery overpowered hitters with effortless mid 90s heat, but he never regained that form after getting hurt his sophmore year and his numbers underwent a significant decline. From his freshman to junior seasons, Savery’s K/9 dropped from 9.8 to 5.9 and his BB/9 rose from 2.8 to 4.

    Savery was almost a tragic example- he was too good for college. So good that he’d regularly throw 120+ pitches a start as a freshman. Perhaps Savery suffered from an extreme case of the Verducci effect, because he certainly threw a lot more pitches as a freshman at Rice than he did in high school. Savery’s case shows there’s no clear rule that applies to every college or high school pitcher.

  17. I said before Atlee Hamaker’s college coach not only had him throw somewhere over 150 pitches but had him in the outfield the next game where he hurt his arm. I believe he was on his way to the HOF. He could be dominate in the Majors but
    couldn’t go over 100 pitches. It makes me sad to think of the mental punishment these kids take sometimes before they are able to stick up for themselves.

  19. 2 Middle Infielders on GCL , Switch Hitters, have the ability to steal bases. Cesar Hernandez, mostly 2B, and Jonathon Villar, mostly SS. Middle Infield situation not as bleak as some have portrayed. Barnes and Bushinin could occupy the Lakewood spots next season, but one of these or both could work in there next season. I would prefer these 2 start and they work in Barnes as back-up at 2 spots and DH.

    Hyatt- a link on here from Baseball Prospectus had Hyatt as a 94 MPH fastball with plus change and most dominating stuff in the league. That seems to contradict the crafty experienced pitchability thing. What was that based upon age, fact he went to college , and is doing well.
