Anderson Garcia was designated for assignment to make room for Feliz.
2/16/08 Seattle claimed RHP Anderson Garcia off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
Phillies grabbed utility infielder Ray Olmedo off waivers from the Blue Jays. P John Ennis removed from 40-man roster to make room for him according to several sources.
Olmedo was actually on the Buccos roster.
2/24/08 – The Phillies signed the following two pitchers from a tryout consisting of independent and former college players:
Jared Locke – LHP
Charles Vartanian – RHP
3/1/08 – John Ennis cleared waivers and agreed to a minor league contract w/ an invite to big kid camp.
Holdzkom was offered back to the Red Sox. He’s now in AAA for Boston.
1B John Urick, is on the Reading Roster. In a good way, does anyone know why?
Urick was moved up to Reading to replace Juan Tejeda who was placed on the DL….I assue newly signed Mike Eylward will play 1B at Clearwater in the meantime.
Excellent work keeping the transactions up to date. Much much appreciated.
That answers my question regarding Segovia. I have to assume he’ll pitch in relief in Reading, unless they want to bump Castro to AAA or Bouknight from the rotation entirely.
Blaylock and Urick headed to Clearwater, Tejeda off the DL, Thomson to Lehigh Valley, Spidale to Reading.
The Phillies claimed infielder Oscar Robles off waivers from the Padres.
Robles showed great bat control when he was with the Dodgers. I thought he’d be a MLB starter by now…I wonder what happened to him?
Hes really not very good. He should fit right in!
Great…another .200 hitter on the IronPigs.
~holds moment of silence for Pascucci who was apparently released~
Tyler Mach to XST from Lakewood? Does that mean he actually showed up, or that they just aren’t holding a roster spot for him at Lakewood any longer?
Not sure…but I’m guessing Mach and Freeman were simply removed from the Lakewood roster since the transactions were both posted at the same time.
Gookie Dawkins traded to CWS organization for infielder Mike Rouse…..the Phillies have major love for AAAA middle infielders
Wow. Thats……wow.
Also, do you have a link for that yet? Havent seen anything on the wire, not that even they would care
Rollins added to the Threshers roster today to play in tonight’s game vs the JUpiter Hammerheads…
I’ll post a link when I get home (since i can’t log in from work), but on Reading’s transaction page it stated that Gookie was traded to the CWS for a PTBNL however Mike Rouse (who was w/ Charlotte – CWS AAA team) is now listed on the Iron Pigs milb roster.
oh man. thats awesome. Thanks again for spotting that, it made my day.
It looks like Rouse has been taken off the IronPIgs roster
Phillies just traded for LHP Stephen Randolph, age 34 from Houston’s AAA club. He’s been alright this season but his walk rate is off the charts. The DN is calling him the new 2nd Lefty in the Pen which I suppose means Condrey is done for. What does this mean for the Castro/Outman moves to the Pen? We appear to have a plethora of 2nd LOOGYs now…
Well, this guy is 34 and hasnt done much of anything in the bigs, so i dont think hes going to hold back Outman or Castro
I agree…it just seems like a “blah” move that was pointless.
It looks like we were right about Mike Rouse…he’s in the lineup for the IronPigs tonight.
The Real Deal has been sent to Reading to make room for Blackley who was activated from the LV DL….his complete game shutout from last year w/ the Phils seems like a distant memory
He had his shot…and pretty much blew it.
Nice to see Alex Concepcion back in action
Well, I hope you didn’t blink if you wanted to see Concepcion pitch…he pitched to two batters on Monday before getting hit by a batted ball…he fractured his leg and is back on the DL.
Freddy Galvis was placed on the DL,and Alberto Cambero was brought up from Extended to replace him.
Phils dumped Steve Kline
Nice start for new acquistion catcher Kevin Nelson 2-3 1HR 2rbi’s
Does anyone know what’s up with Donald? I haven’t seen him in the box score for a few days?
Tweeked his hamstring.
07/07/08 – Charles Vartanian from GCL to Williamsport.
per SQUIRE, Darin McDonald retired.

jeremy hamilton and jim murphy switched places

Phils acquired Scott Eyre from the Cubs for Brian Schlitter….at least it wasn’t Donald for Mahay!
anybody realize that when we added iguchi, we DFA’ed RJ Swindle? I’d consider him a much better prospect than Bohn at this point, and he’s a bigger help than andy tracy would be, or maybe cervanek. It’s unfortunate they gave up on him.
Phillies claimed RHP Scott Nestor from Florida today and released Francisco Rosario. Nestor had a ERA over 7 in triple A.
The Phillies apparently could have had Nestor and an extra $1.1 Million a year ago:
“The Marlins offered Scott Nestor to the Phillies for Wes Helms, if the Phils paid $1.8MM of the $2.9MM owed to the third baseman.” – from a Ken Rosenthal column.
Apparently used to throw 94-96, but not much control or effectiveness.
why
Replacing one erratic hard-thrower with another.
I liked the Rosario pick-up at the time, but he could never remain healthy and/or effective. Nestor seems like more of the same, but there’s really no downside here. The odds of him ever developing MLB-quality command aren’t good, quite frankly, but he throws hard enough to be an effective reliever if that ever happens.
Still, it’d have been nice to have had him a year ago, with the extra $1.1 million in the pocket.
According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies signed reliever Gary Majewski to a minor league deal worth $650K.
Chris who is he?
He was a great young reliever with Monreal/Washington then had arm problems when traded to the Reds in 2006. Has been on his way back since. Only 30+ games the past two years in the majors with the Reds. Here are his numbers…http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/majewga01.shtml
He’s a fastball/slider guy, and used to throw mid 90′s I’m pretty sure. But his velocity has dropped off since then with his arm issues. He sits 90-94 now, where as he used to be 92-96 type of pitcher.
thanks. His hits per innings are not good. But as you said he was hurt they must see something in him to pay 650.000. I would rather they would have taken that money and payed workman, Gibson, and cooper and last year gave Weber a little more to sign.or Russo who could be a stud down the line.
oh cheese
Iam sure 171 innings the second year in pro ball didnt help
Bullpen depth is never a bad thing…another solid tertiary signing by Amaro/Gillick.
oh cheese
I guess Tex isnt coming here. big sigh
how long before a Amaro- Gillick falling out You know it is coming even if we dont find out. I didnt like someone looking over my shoulder in Kindergarten
Majewski- it is not a minor league deal for $650,000. That was a “headline” on MLBTR. the link says $650,000 would be the Major League salary In the minors he gets $15,000 a month (around $90,000) per season. If not on MLB roster by July 1, he can demand either movement to MLB roster or his release. If he is released at that point he gets $300,000 buyout. Since it is a minor league contract it is not guaranteed, and I would think if he is released in Spring Training, he would get a portion of those guarantees.
So it’s not a big deal, and will not necessarily take much away from the development budget, and they should be separate anyway.
Above post—maybe the link from Troy Renck says as MLBTR says it does, but the real deal is on http://www.philly.com
Marfis thanks for the explanation. I thought that was a lot to put out for him. but now I Understand.
Phils finally gave up on Welinson Baez
I’m surprised nobody has posted this yet:

I think it is a great signing for insurance purposes, although I would love to see Donald win the job outright.
OZUNA SIGNED, INVITED TO SPRING TRAINING | 4:43 PM
BY SCOTT LAUBER
In another sign that the Phillies are bracing for a possible April without Chase Utley, they have agreed to a minor-league contract with veteran infielder Pablo Ozuna, who will come to spring training as a non-roster invitee.
Ozuna, 34, batted .260 with one homer and nine RBIs in 68 games between the White Sox and Dodgers last season. He has been a utility infielder throughout his career, batting .282 in 309 games with the Marlins (2000, 2002), Rockies (2003), White Sox (2005-08) and Dodgers (2008). He got a career-high 203 at-bats for the White Sox in ’05 and batted a career-high .328 for Chicago in ’06. Short-term, he figures to join incumbent utility man Eric Bruntlett, non-roster veteran Marcus Giles and top prospect Jason Donald as potential options at second base if Utley (hip surgery in November) is unable to start the season on time. Long-term, Ozuna figures to play at triple-A Lehigh Valley and could push Bruntlett. Both Bruntlett and Ozuna have some experience in the outfield.
Also invited to spring training today: infielders Anthony Hewitt and Jorge Velandia and left-hander Jacob Woods. Hewitt, 19, was the Phillies’ first-round pick last June, but batted only .197 with seven doubles, one homer and nine RBIs in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. It has been the Phillies’ policy over the past few years to invite their most recent first-round pick to major-league camp. Kyle Drabek was in camp in ’07. Joe Savery was there last year. Like Ozuna, Velandia has major-league experience, 174 games worth with the Padres (1997), Athletics (1998-2000), Mets (2000-01, 2003), Rays (2007) and Indians (2008).
That brings the list of non-roster invitees to 23. Want to see a rundown of the previous 19? Click here.
ozuna could replace bruntlett. possible
Per baseball america:
Acouple of new names.
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Jason Anderson, RHP Dave Borkowski, RHP Santos Hernandez, RHP William Jackel, RHP Gary Majewski, RHP Steven Shepard, LHP Jake Woods, 2B Marcus Giles, OF Jason Ellison
Anderson, Borkowski, Majewski, Woods, Giles and Ellison all have varying degrees of big league experience, but for our purposes, perhaps the most interesting name here is Santos Hernandez. Signed by the Rockies in 2000 and released three years later, the Dominican-born righthander has spent the past five seasons bouncing around the independent circuit (after landing briefly in the Mexican League in ‘05). He’s still just 25 and he’s coming off a solid year for the United League’s Laredo franchise: 8-6, 3.55 with 132 strikeouts and 37 walks in 112 innings which earned him a spot on our Independent Leagues Top Prospects list. Hernandez did little, performance-wise, to bolster his case this winter in the Puerto Rican League, however, as he walked seven and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings. Most of the damage came in his lone start.
According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post the Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with Damon Hollins. He turns 35 in June and hasn’t played in the majors since 2006.
The contract is worth $450K, $65K of which is guaranteed. Hollins can request a trade if he’s not on the 25 man roster by July 1st. He can pay the Phillies $100K to sign with a Japanese team or $50K to sign with a Korean team, but they have the option of adding him to their roster within three days instead.
Chris does the word “why” pop into your head
nw if amaro and gillick have a falling out i certainly hope the hof gm falls in. please no garciaparro or alou. lets not block donald. an interesting tidbit, despite all the analizing we do ive found over the years that the guys who set the prices for rookie cards generally know who is going to succeed. donald is the most expensive phillie, carrasco next, and marson 3rd. when it comes to money these guys are seldom wrong.
The log has gotten really long. IMHO, you should delete some of the older transactions so we have a fresh log for this season.
Also: According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post the Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with Damon Hollins.

Minor League Transactions

Granted free agency: RHP J.D. Durbin
one year too late
Great news on Howards’s contract . I proposed 18 mil for each of the next two years. This is much better. Good Job Ruben
ps. On Arod try defending your self on something 6 years ago
I am not saying he is innocent or quility but there is a reason we have a statue of limitions. Please someone put BALSO in prospective. We have much bigger drug problems
i know that howard isn’t a prospect, so i will just say “i told you so” and leave it at that. he was never going anywhere. no way a guy like that in his prime was getting traded from a major market team. and all you Amaro bashers, this was a very wise move. a 3 year deal is perfect. we will get him for his prime but are not locked into a monster contract. the idiot yankees will be paying texiera for 8 years (or until he is 36).
Right on but keeping homie player has to keep the team interesting and increase money flow from media outlets
dont forget a couple of years ago they didnt even have a decent radio station
money helps kept better propects Hopeful Ruben doesnt go the cource of the mets and keeps the path open to young prospects

Butto is Back!
per Baseball America
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Francisco Butto, RHP Mike Thompson
Butto has been pitching in Mexico the last couple of years with some success. He was also the MVP of the recent Caribbean Series. Not a bad guy to stash in your AAA bullpen. Turns 29 this year, even with a 2-year correction along the way (which dropped his Philly prospect status).
Phillies pick up minor league pitcher Manny Ayala from SD.
Padres trade for Indians reliever
By Tom Krasovic
April 1, 2009, 8:03 a.m.
The Padres have traded for Indians reliever Edward Mujica, a right-hander with a good fastball. Cleveland will get cash or a player to be named later.
Mujica, 24, was out of minor league options, so it’s doubtful the Padres gave up much for him. He probably would have been put on waivers, so the trade signifies that the Padres probably feared that the Mariners or Nationals would have put in a claim on the right-hander, whose fastball has reached 94 mph this spring.
Mujica went 3-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 33 appearances for the Indians last season. For his career, he is 3-3 with a 6.04 ERA in 70 innings. The Venezuelan has 46 strikeouts and 12 walks.
In two other separate moves, the Padres traded Triple-A right-hander Manny Ayala to the Phillies and brought back Jae Kuk Ryu, a right-hander claimed off waivers by the Indians in March.
No word yet on what the Padres will get from Philadelphia, but San Diego was preparing to release Ayala before the trade.
HERE ARE HIS STATS.
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/A/Manny-Ayala.shtml
Per BA 5/18, the Phillies released RHP Pedro Carpio, C Ferrel Gomez, OF Ruddy Rio-Nunez, OF Angus Roeger and OF Damarri Saunderson
The Phillies on Monday signed journeyman catcher Paul Bako to a minor league contract.
Bako, 36, began this season playing with the Chicago Cubs before being released on March 30. He will report to Clearwater for extended spring training. Should he be assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he would give the IronPigs’ staff a valuable veteran presence.
“Paul has a tremendous amount of major league experience and he gives us the opportunity to add greater catching depth to our system,” assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said in a statement released by the team.
The Phillies are the 11th career team for Bako, who began his major league career with Detroit in 1998. In 745 career games with the Tigers, Astros, Marlins, Braves, Brewers, Cubs, Dodgers, Royals, Orioles and Reds, Bako has hit .231 with 21 home runs and 186 RBIs. He has thrown out 28 percent of potential base stealers.
They released Saunderson and rio-nunez both were draft choices werent they and didn’t get much of a chance. wasn’t one of them from canada
That’s hysterical! Of all people, Damarri Saunderson gets released? What happened to him being the next Daryl Strawberry or whatever. Guess we’ll have t find someone to replace him at #23 on our list. He was probably voting for himself.
shunky what are you talking about?
Somehow Saunderson got voted into the reader top 30 at #23… there was all kinds of controversy about it and James had to change the voting rules or something. There was like 1 or 2 people that voted for him a bunch of times and defended him— and now he’s released without even a full season of professional ball to show for it.
Saunderson got highly suspicious vote totals in the readers’ top 30 polls. IIRC, he would receive more votes himself than would be recorded total in subsequent rounds.
Bastardo sent to AAA Lehigh Valley, Jason Anderson sent down to AA Reading
TJ Do you think he is now ahead of Carrasco in there thinking on who is more major league ready?
Great Nothing ventured……
Who knows this might fire up Carrasco
Huppert and his staff will take care of baby
Carrasco’s way ahead yet. His ERA looks terrible, but his HR/9, BB/9 and K/9 are very good. Plus Carrasco is still 18 months younger. I think Carrasco’s struggles are mostly bad luck.
great news about bastardo. you know who had bad luck anthony young of the mets. when it happens consistanly its not bad luck. its useually the batters seeing you for the 2 or 3 time or lack of concentration.
May 22: LHP Gustavo Chacin added to AA Reading from extended spring training
C Orlando Guevara sent to Williamsport (Short-A/extended spring training).
R.J. Swindle – RP – Brewers
Brewers recalled LHP R.J. Swindle from Triple-A Nashville.
Swindle spent about 10 days with the big club in April and posted a 6.75 ERA in 1 1/3 innings. The side-armer should get a better shake this time around. He’ll pitch in middle relief.
May. 22 – 9:11 a.m. ET
Orioles Release Adam Eaton
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [May 22, 2009 at 4:22pm CST]
4:22pm: According to the Baltimore Sun it’s official- Eaton’s been released. As the Sun points out, Eaton only completed five innings in two of his eight starts this year.
could of told ya
nw it actually a reality that ( knock on wood) you know who could win the you know what.
This from csnphilly.com
In other news, deposed starter Justin Lehr was dealt to the Reds for as of yet unknown compensation. He had lost his spot in the rotation to Antonio Bastardo, who will start Saturday against Durham, and was likely to lose his spot on the roster when Tyler Walker returns from the disabled list. Lehr pitched for Triple-A Louisville and in Korea last year.
June 1: LHP Gustavo Chacin added to AAA LV from Reading
P KYLE DRABEK sent to Reading AA from Clearwater
His first start is this Thursday, cannot wait to see Kyle pitch.
Sorry forgot to add my name to the post…
The Phillies brought up Paul Bako from Reading to replace Lidge on the roster today.
thanks chris I thought I was having a bad dream. Unless they
ditching Coste this make no sense at all on anyones cheat sheet. Where are the aspirin?
I saw a line that this frees up Coste. For what he is hitting.229.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy is expected to miss at least a month because of his injured ankle, meaning he may not return until after the All-Star break
He was scratched from Saturday’s start against the Los Angeles Angels after an MRI showed that the tibialis tendon behind his right ankle was torn.
This why I want to wait until late to pick up a farm buster and for those of you who believed he wasnt hurt in the Phils game
I have a bridge to sell. Hopefully he recovers and will be available later.
What do I have to do to be sent on Extended Spring Break like Trevor May? I wonder if he’s happy about coming back and pitching, or if he was having fun.

Ibanez to DL, Mayberry to Philly
That still leaves them without a decent Dh. They have to do something(Taylor) and hell with the arb clock. I noticed Raul
swinging funny but I thought he was just tired from the road trip. No golden whichamacallerit here just a regular one.
Lakewood has announced the promotion of pitchers Jon Velasquez and Santo Hernandez to Clearwater along with OF Steve Susdorf. Rumor has it that Tyler Cloyd will join them following the SAL All-Star Game on Tuesday. No sign yet of any players being promoted to Reading, so my guess is that we will see some players released from the Clearwater team later this afternoon. Clearwater and the FSL are always slow to update their transactions lists so I will try to get some news this afternoon, or at the game tonight.
Flande to Reading would make sense I suppose now that the FSL AS game is over, and perhaps Kennelly to Reading too since he has mainly played OF in Clearwater lately.
sam walls released
Pat Overholt was promoted to Lehigh Valley today. I wonder if this is permanent? If so, it could be his last chance to impress after he started out so well in Reading last year.
Phillies | Expressing interest in G. Santana
Comment (0)
Tue, 14 Jul 2009 12:07:48 -0700
Al Balderas, of The Orange County Register, reports the Philadelphia Phillies have expressed interest in international prospect P GianCarlos Santana, who is the younger brother of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Ervin Santana.
This was on the Lakewood site.
Collier to Williamsport; Warren Returns
July 21st, 2009 BlueClaws Zach Collier has been sent to Williamsport and the BlueClaws have received OF TJ Warren from the Crosscutters to take his place on the roster.
Collier, 18, was hitting .218 with Lakewood and had 25 hits in his last 130 at bats. He was a supplemental first-round pick of the Phillies last year.
Warren, who was with Lakewood last year, where he went .251-2-30, was hitting .286 in 77 at bats with Williamsport. He was an 8th round pick in 2006.
Overholt sent to AAA – Escalona sent back to AA
BJ Rosenberg bumped two levels from Lakewood to Reading.
Schwimer promoted to Reading!!!
Good Deal!
Todd Zolecki tweets that Quintin Berry, Yohan Flande, and Jesus Sanchez have been added to the 40 man roster.
The only glaring omission I can think of is Tim Kennelly. He struggled a bit at Reading this year, but I would tend to think he’s worth protecting.
Sanchez has been in the organization far longer than most A ball pitchers, so protecting him was a necessity I think. I think Kennelly’s safe, I doubt he would get picked up in the Rule 5 draft.
Phillies Sign Tagg Bozied
By Tim Dierkes [December 31 at 11:51am CST]
The Phillies signed Tagg Bozied today, MLBTR has learned. Bozied, 30, hit .288/.360/.447 in 240 plate appearances for the Pirates’ Triple A club this year after starting the year in Taiwan. He mainly played first base and the outfield corners. Bozied hit .306/.382/.569 for the Marlins’ Triple A club in ’08.
Bozied was a big-time power prospect in the Padres system several years ago, but he ruptured the patella tendon in his left knee in July of ’04 jumping on home plate to celebrate a game-winning grand slam.
Danys Baez
Cheese this is exactly the kind of FA you don’t want especially around Charlie. He is ok against right handers. He is best with none on,,so the best bet is he starts the inning but only one.
4-12 over three years with 3 saves. But he did have a great year in ’05. Mr Middle of the road.
great ground ball tendencies…he should play well with our defense and ballpark.
2nd year back from TJ is always better.
Bozied will give Lehigh a solid 1B…good org fodder.
Thanks I didn’t know about the TJ. Obviously he changed his style as he used to be a FB type.
I for one don’t hold with the low ball style at CBP. It is too easy to lift the mistakes ala Ryan and Utley. For New years sing “Oh dem hanging breaking ball” Happ’s is able to keep FBs in the park and in a small outfield, my guy. HNY
BTW I hope Bozied is not just a PCL guy.
Great piece on the Phillies exec of the year,Omar Minaya.
Omar we couldn’t have done it without ya.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20100104_Phillies_have__mild_interest__in_Taiwanese_outfielder_Lee.html
According to Philly.com, Miguel Nunez, a 6-6 righthander from the Dominican Republic agreed to a $220,000 signing bonus with the Phils.
Additionally, they have “mild interest” in 21 year old Taiwanese outfielder Chia-Jung Lee. He’s considered a marginal prospect.
The Twins agreed to terms with reliever Clay Condrey, according to a team press release
MLB RUMORS
The marlins were forced by the union to increase spending as they were probably pocketing revenue sharing money.
The first result as far as the Phils go,they are resigning Josh Johnson for 4 years.(back loaded of course)
From a Scott Lauber tweet vis MLBTR. Phillies sign Jason Standridge a former #1 pick to Minor League Deal. Pitched little for Marlins at AAA last season, AAA candidate. Also rumor of interest in Jose Contreras for minor league deal.
From the current BA transaction list, names I have not seen before.
RHP Jordan Meaker, finished up at Lo-A last season so not that old, 6’6 220.
3B- Brandon Pinckney, played at AA and AAA last season, so I say he is a AAA candidate (with Cody Ransom, Neil Sellers, and Eric Campbell- by my list) . Around 28 , 5’10 165, does not appear to be much of a power hitter.
http://www.canadianbaseballnetwork.com/draftlist/2011 This is not strictly a transaction, per se, but something some people might be interested in looking over, and I don’t really see any perfect place for it. It is from Toronto writer, Elliot, and gives a listing of Canadian draft prospects with brief descriptions. Given the Phillies propensity for snagging Canadians in the draft , maybe somebody should tuck it away for future reference. One thing, it doesn’t really give ages or date of birth, but, hey, what do YOU want for nothin?
Phillies Claim Brian Bocock Off Waivers
By Mike Axisa [January 26 at 1:47pm CST]
The Phillies have claimed infielder Brian Bocock off waivers from the Blue Jays, tweets MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. Toronto just claimed Bocock off waivers from the Giants earlier this month.
The 24-year-old appeared in 32 games for the Giants back in 2008, but he hasn’t seen the show since. The timing is pretty interesting, because Philadelphia has a higher waiver priority than Toronto for NL players, so they had first crack at claiming Bocock earlier this month. What’s changed?
Bocock’s MLB stint was odd, to say the least. He hadn’t hit even in the California League and the Giants still made him their starting shortstop. I’d say this move allows Freddy Galvis to develop in Clearwater, as Bocock will likely play in AA Reading.
According to the Caribbean World Series broadcasts, Freddy Guzman is in the Phillies organization. There is no source for this whatsoever beyond the Caribbean rosters which are notoriously suspect. Is this the broadcasters passing on bad information or is there anything else to this?
Yep, they got it right if the source of http://www.milb.com is correct, because they list Freddy Guzman as a member of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, and he was added since the end of the season.
And I might add, the International League transactions page says the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs signed Freddy Guzman on January 28, 2009.
And , also , now that I check Baseball America, it lists the Freddy Guzman signing as well as RHP Brian Gordon (around AAA) 2B Luiz Maza (around AAA) and a guy some people may have already heard of…LHP Brian Mazzone.
Also the Guzman signing on MLBTR.
Yeah, I see Baseball America has it now. Guzman is an odd signing. He has speed in excess but he is not a good hitter, and he is not a particularly good defensive outfielder either.
Glad to see Brian Mazone back as well. I always root for him, though he’s becoming the AAA version of Jamie Moyer. He has no pure stuff left whatsoever.
MLBTR
rehashes a tweet from Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse that says
Phillies sign Oscar Villareal , who I believe is a LHP, maybe.
Since he is only 28 somebody might work him unto the top 30 list ahead of Mayberry.
Upon further review , he is a RHP. Bats Left though. He is from Mexico.
Oh yeah, one more thing , Villarreal was a minor league deal. It has also now been reported by Matt Gelb of http://www.philly.com …. he also says the Phillies have signed catcher John Purdom, recently of the Camden Riversharks.
More on Purdom. He spent the early 2009 season in the Florida Marlins organization, with little seeming offensive out put. He is around 28 , so should be a candidate for AAA or AA.
Villarreal has over 300 MLB innings. There is no way he gets considered for a prospect list. Ehren Wassermann though would not be a completely ridiculous proposition.
Oh yeah, Villarreal, now that I seen his picture on philly.com I remember him. Didn’t at first, resulting in some way off speculation, which ought to be disregarded, by now.
Here’s a biggie. Phillies sign Shigetoshi Yamakita and Naoyo Okamoto. Never heard of ‘em? Both Japanese, both LHP’s both played for Nemex in Japanese minor leagues last season. Yamakita is 32, and Okamoto is 26. Where they will compete for a position, I don’t know, but looks like they are a bit short in the low minors for LH Relief pitchers.
Source- MLBTR
Make that team for Japanese LHP’s Shonan Searex.
Upon further review, Gelb says the Phillies have not confirmed these signings, and Axisa of MLBTR says the Phillies say they have not signed any Japaneses pitchers. So I say it’s undecided.
Per the latest BA transactions log, the Phillies signed C Zak Farkes and 1B Gabriel Martinez. Farkes is an A-ball catcher with batting averages but has pop. Martinez is your run of the mill four corners player. Looks like organizational filler.

Phillies Claim Brian Bocock Off Waivers

++++++++++++++++
Chris:
Only Trade Waivers (the type of waivers needed to make trades after July 31) require that a player be “waived out of his own league” before a club from the other league can be awarded a claim. Outright Waivers make no distinction between leagues, so the Blue Jays did get first dibs on Brian Bocock when he was claimed off Outright Assignment Waivers on 1/7, because Toronto had a worse record than the Phillies in 2009 (although the Phils probably made a claim at that time, too).
Also, just as a further point of info, waiver claims during the off-season and up through the 30th day of the MLB regular season are awarded based upon a club’s regular season record from the previous season. (The club with the worse record is awarded the claim). Ties are broken based upon standings from the previous season (or two years back, three years back, etc). Then beginning on the 31st day of the MLB regular season, waiver claims are awarded based upon the current MLB standings on the morning of the day the player clears waivers.
Didnt know where to put this but we have the right brother
Sarge might have a problem with this name.
Bronson Kiheimahanaomauiakeo Sardinha
Tweets from Robothal and Jerry Crasnick. Brad Wilkerson signed a minor league deal with the Phillies. No NRI.
Latest Transactions log from BA.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=7631
RHP Rick Guttormson. Apparently Charlie Kerfeld scouted him previously for the Mariners’ organization, so that’s the likely connection here. Looks like a groundball pitcher.
From the Baseball America transactions: Phillies sign Keoni DeRenne, last of York in the Atlantic League, 30, plays 2B and such, former Braves pick, another Hawaiian to team with Sardinha, maybe just for Spring Training.
Phillies also release RHP Reginal Simon.
Now, it can be made official. The Baseball America transactions show the following cuts: (Many were speculated on on here when the workout groups came out 2 times back, but some I have not previously seen specualted on) Mark Doll, RHP, Miguel Matos, RHP, Angelo Sanchez RHP ( was selected in the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 Draft), Jason Standridge , RHP, Walter Tejeda, LHP, Bill White, LHP, Gaby Martinez, 1B, Evan Poter, SS, Jesus Villegas-Andino, SS, Javis Diaz, OF, Carl Uhl, OF.
From the recent BA transactions list, besides listing the 38 players recently released, the Phillies also added 2 Catchers, Jeff Lanning from the Twins organization, and James Skelton from the Diamond Backs Organization. Lanning I figured for about 23 6′ 210 R-R, should fit in somewhere between Lo A and Hi A based on experience and results. Skelton, around 24, 5’11 165 L-R and could go between Hi A and AA. Neither of these guys hit for much results, so hopefully they don’t bounce somebody promising out. Also , they have yet to place Josh Fogg or Ty Taubenheim on a full season roster.
Okay, here’s the latest BA transactions stuff (just what’s not been seen by a general following of the rosters and on here).
They list Travis Mattair on the restricted list (and as a SS, maybe he did not retire , really). The restricted list definition on BA that I think applies, might be unauthorized long term absense.
Also the recently signed C James Skelton is on the DL as is Michael Durant who they list as 3B. Maybe that means something or not. Also all those on the minor leagues’ team DL’s generally known..
Clearwater- Activated John Suomi , C, from the 7 day DL.
Placed Joel Naughton, C, on the 7 day DL.
On the Hinkle and Carr signings, as above, Hinkle was at HI-A, and was at nearly a Strikeout per inning , and around half a walk per inning. While, Kyle Karr the LeftHander, was at LO-A and amassed Strikeout ratios in excess of 14 and 10 per 9 innings, in the Rookie League and LO-A.
Here’s today’s shuffling of the organizational Catchers as gleaned from the MiLB rosters and League Transactions:
Jeff Lanning from XST to Clearwater.
John Suomi from Clearwater to Lehigh Valley.
Kevin Nelson from Lehigh Valley to Reading.
Kyle LaFrenz from Reading to Lakewood.
Based on the Catching moves, I would say for now, they like where they have them placed from Reading on down.
When Schneider returns to MLB roster , they likely return Hoover to LVIP, then they may release John Suomi, who did not throw out any runners at Cleawater, that is my guess.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100517&content_id=10116074&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was
Later strasberg who wudda thunk the nats would be the competition.
Dominican roster up. SS Lendy Castillo will be assigned there as a Pitcher candidate. Miguel Nunez to DSL. Players still in XST are listed as “Reserve” and are: Felix Cespedes, RHP, LisAlverto Bonilla, RHP, Geancarlo Mendez 1B-2B, and a player I did not see on the original list for XST, Luis Beltre, OF.
Josh Fogg started yesterday for Reading.
The Phillies just signed Willy Tavares to a minor league deal to replace Wise.
Phillippe Aumont demoted to Clearwater.
I see from the Florida State League transactions that Jeff Lanning was demoted to XST with the arrival of Phillippe Aumont.
From the League transactions of the SAL, I get that Jon Petitbon , RHP, activated from DL and Keoni DeRenne, INF (player-coach ) was added.
To make room Siulman Lebron, RHP, and Kyle LaFrenz, C, were sent to XST.
From the rosters and transactions lists of the latest:
Reading- Brian Stavisky retired
Kevin Nelson activated from Disabled List.
Clearwater- D’Arby Myers rejoined team from XST.
Zack Sterner has been released.
thanks my friend.
Lakewood- Jeremy Barnes to DL. Matthew McConell, INF, recalled to replace him.
Word has it Villar injured in yesterday’s Blue Claws game, hope he isn’t on the list soon.
Let’s see. Brian Gump from Clearwater to Lakewood. Jeremy Barnes back from DL.
Williamsport roster up.
Keoni DeRenne from Lakewood to Clearwater.
Since the Williamsport roster is up, here are some complications for it:
Jake Smith, 3B, assigned to roster.
Gauntlett Eldemire no longer appears on roster (No reason listed, rumor of injury).
Added to roster and placed on DL: Zach Collier OF (from Lakewood, said to be out for season), rest from XST: Mauricio Romero, RHP, Marco Davalillo , C, Ryan Gugel, C-DH-1B, Bernardo Solarte , OF.
Lakewood- Jeremy Barnes back to DL (broken nose) and Keoni DeRenne back from Clearwater to replace him.
Dominican Republic- Rudney Balentien seems to have returned from XST as he now appears on the DSL roster (and there is no reserve designation either) and looks like Jose Trinidad was reinstated from his drug suspension also as he returns to roster.
Does anyone know where Juan Sandoval came from? Was he a recent free agent signing?
Free agent, according to phillies.com. He appears to be a veteran of the Southern League. Unimpressive numbers but does not allow many home runs.
Cross Cutters website says Jacob Borup has signed and will report to team tomorrow after physical.
Justin Beal promoted from Williamsport to Lakewood.
Fabio Murakami, OF and Marco Davalillo, C Williamsport status changed from DL to Suspended.
Kevin Nelson, C, Reading returns from Inactive List.
Torre Langley, C , demoted from Reading to Lakewood.
Also from BA transactions Phillies signed Angel Chavarin, C, from Monclava in Mexican League. 19 years old. .273/.429/.364 in 11 Games.
Also to clear up some mini-mysteries. Add to the Suspended List RHP’s Felix Cespedes and Justin Long.
I believe there is a mistake on Dominican Roster- they list a Rudney Valentine as a new addition as an OF, however , he has the same birthplace, birthdate, height and weight, and in certain ways their names would be pronounced the same, as Rudney Balentien. Now they have 2 different sets of stats for them/him. Could be there is a lack of infallibility among some roster keepers..
The Phillies signed a 16 year old SS from Venezuela today. Fransisco Silva for 200k. That is usually on the high side, as far as bonuses for international players signed by the Phillies. Reportedly good arm and good D.
Good…we need all the middle infield prospects we can get.
From BA transactions:
GCL- OF Winder Torres voluntarily retired.
WPT- Gauntlett Eldemire- now on DL.
From rosters and transactions-
GCL- RHP Lendy Castillo demoted to DSL.
WPT- LHP Bryan Morgado now on roster, (David Buchanon earler)
VSL- Wilmer Oberto,OF, was signed and added to roster a couple of days back.
VSL- signed Jesus Briceno, C, (left handed hitter, around 18)
Robert Stumpo , C, advanced from GCL to Clearwater (FSL).
Kinda surprised about Winder Torres voluntarily retiring. GCL Phillies down to 4 OFs now with Unda, Beltre, Altherr and Duffy (and maybe Geancarlo Mendez I guess).
Duffy looks he has played and will play 1B-DH. Mendez looks like regular in LF for now.
LKW- Brian Gump, OF to DL.
Lots of players moved from 7 day DL to 60 day DL in GCL and WPT.
GCL- Osmel Reyes, RHP, added to 60 Day DL. (former C in VSL, never really pitched much since injury, been injured for around 5 years now)
Phils sign pitcher. Camden Riversharks lefthander Derrick Loop signed a contract with the Phillies and will join the single-A Clearwater Threshers.
Loop, a 6-foot-3 middle reliever, has a 1.72 ERA in 33 games. He has pitched in 311/3 innings, allowing just seven runs, and was selected for the Atlantic League all-star team.
The 26-year-old was drafted by Cleveland in 2006.

Watch sports videos you won’t find anywhere else
Here’s the most recent ones from MiLB rosters and transactions that I got, not as yet shown on roster list here.
AAA- Antonio Bastardo-LHP , from Phillies
AA- John Suomi ,C, from AAA
CLW- Signed Derrick Loop , LHP
LKW- Signed RHP’s Joseph Esposito and Mike McGuire (local 6’7 240)
(Loop, Esposito, and McGuire are minor league veterans)
Saw that Carlos Perdomo is now on the Clearwater roster.
LVIP- Brian Gordon, RHP, activated from DL
LVIP- Nate Bump, RHP, demoted to RDG
RDG- Michael Cisco, RHP, promoted to LVIP
Wasn’t Juan Castro released recently? Didn’t see it on the transactions page.
Note: the Michael Dabbs to Lakewood thing was accompanied by a Leandro Castro,(OF) to the DL. Kind of semi-big.
Here’s some:
AAA- Melvin Dorta off of DL, Keoni DeRenne to Lakewood.
Lakewood- Leandro Castro back from DL, add DeRenne, David Doss Retired, Julio Rodriguez promoted from Williamsport, Chad Poe released (CSNPhilly)
Kinda odd to sign like 4 independent league pitchers and then release a guy we gave 6 figures 2 years ago (Poe). Julio Rodriguez has really good numbers this year.
Phillies sign UDFA RHP Drew Erwin from Nicholls State and currently pitching in the Northwoods League and assign him to GCL Phillies. He is 21 years old.
AAA- Chris Duffy released. (Matt Gelb on Twitter)
AA- Rich Thompson to AA.
GCL= draft choice Ethan Stewart , LHP, assigned there.
Signed RHP, Andrew Snowdon.
Rich Thompson is already at AA. Rich Thompson to AAA.
Yeah, was gonna’ correct it right after posting but the machine acted up.
B.J. Rosenberg , RHP, no longer on Reading’s DL, assigned to Clearwater.
CLW- Christopher Kissock, RHP, assigned to Reading.
RDG- John Ennis, RHP, released.
LKW- Keoni DeRenne , INF, assigned to RDG
Phillies signed Drew Rundle (LHP) who was recently released by the Cubs. Here’s some interesting info from BA on Rundle. Seems like he’s worth taking a flier on especially b/c he hasn’t spent much time pitching:
Drew Rundle pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the Rookie-level Arizona League this season, recording strikeouts for three of his four outs. He walked two and allowed two hits. But pitching was only a last resort for Rundle, 21, whom the Cubs signed as a 14th-round pick in ’06 for a well-over-slot $500,000. For perspective, only one third-round pick that year got as much as Rundle—the Nationals’ Stephen King, who recently returned from a 50-game drug suspension.
In four seasons as a position player, mostly a corner outfielder, Rundle batted just .227/.338/.380 with 16 home runs 258 games. Even as an amateur, he seemed like an imperfect fit as a center fielder, and he never did develop the power to profile on a corner. Rundle showed promise with short-season Boise in ’08, batting .292/.393/.563 in 53 games, but that success proved to be short lived. He peaked at the high Class A level, appearing in 18 games for Daytona over the years and batting .170/.250/.234.
The Cubs gave up on Rundle (a somewhat toolsy OF) relatively early. No idea what kind of arm he has, but a 6’4″ lefty is worth a look if he has a decent arm.
Odd the BA write-up considering the Williamsport roster lists him as OF and he played in the last game as an OF. The OF situation there I have as Domingo Santana, the newly returned from injury Kyrell Hudson, and I suspect there are injuries to Aaron Altherr and Miguel Alvarez. Not alot of promising OF talent among the reserves in INF or C either. So , with Rundle that’s 3 OF for now, so maybe he stays there.
CLW- Joel Naughton activated from DL.
LKW- Gabriel Suarez, SS, to CLW
CLW- Korby Mintken, INF, to LKW
Also , from a quick look at Rosters: AAA- Joe Savery , LHP, on DL. Lakewood- Brian Gump , OF, should read (DL) instead of (OF).
CLW- Derrick Loop to DL
Catchers-
LKW- Sebastien Valle to DL
WPT- Jim Klocke to LKW
GCL (season over)
Lendy Castillo, RHP , to WPT
Juary Gomez, RHP, to WPT
Francisco Diaz, C, to WPT
Geancarlo Mendez, OF, to WPT
Tyler Knigge, RHP, to WPT
Matt Hutchinson, RHP, to CLW
Marshall Schuler, RHP to CLW
WPT-
Domingo Santana, OF, to DL
Craig Fritsch, RHP, to DL
Garrett Claypool, RHP, to DL
Percival Garner, RHP, from Restricted List to DL
LKW- Sebastien Valle, C, activated from DL
James Klocke, C, to GCL
GCL- Cale Owen, INF, to CLW
CLW- Derrick Loop, LHP, to LVIP
LVIP- Scott Mathieson, RHP, Nate Robertson LHP, Vance Worley , RHP to PHILA
Saw Loop pitch in relief for the Threshers last week. The team gun had him in the mid 80′s but every pitch had movement, good location and he worked out of a jam. Looked like a splitter he was throwing.
Good to see Zagurski get the call uptoo. He struck out the side swinging in his last AAA inning.
BA- Re-instated from inactive list- RHP’s Felix Cespedes and Justin Long.
Placed on the restricted list- RHP Justin Long.
Cheese Marfis do you ever sleep. You are so on top of things. I bet you drink your coffee from a baseball mug.
What is with Long??
MiLB-
DSL-
RELEASED- Nelson Ventura , C, Franique Charles, RHP
DSL- Alvaro Bacil, RHP suspended 50 games for Performance Enhancing Drugs.
BA- PHL- activated Jeremy Slayden, OF, from the inactive list.
PHL- Paul Hoover, C, outrighted to Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
Some MLB clean-up- Greg Dobbs INF-OF , Jamie Moyer, LHP (also Hoover, C) dropped from 40 man roster and elect Free Agency. Decline option on J.C. Romero, LHP (believe is still on roster till free agency starts).
Did not see the release of VSL Jose Hernandez, RHP, and Kirlian Campo, LHP. The link provided does not have it.
Phillies claim Carlos Rivero off waivers from Indians. He’s only 22 but spent the last two years at AA…unfortunately his numbers are not dissimilar from another young SS who spent the year at AA for the Phils. He’s gotta go on the 40 man roster. My bet is he’s the LHV starting SS which means no more Bocock.
Yeah, Rivero- Hoynes , of the Cleveland paper, has him at 6’3 200, and Baseball Reference has him at 6’3 220. So, unlike that AA SS they won’t be saying he’s too small. Valdez , having been signed as a minor league free agent, probably has an expired contract, maybe they will have to add to the 40 man roster before December, but, if not they could keep both SS’s through the Rule 5 Draft.Maybe afterwards.
See those VSL releases were on the September League transactions.
How about a move to 3rd. Here is a comment on the state of that position in the majors “Red Sox 3B Beltre declines $10 million option”
It seems like time to pull out all the stops.
Do Rizzotti and Savory go on the 40 man roster or do you expose them in the Rule 5? It would be low risk to expose Savory, but not sure about Rizzotti. A losing club may throw a flier on him.
I liked Beltre last year, clearly a more expensive option that Polanco. Even if Polanco gives you 2 / 3 good years on that contract, it was worth it.
I think a player needs 6 years in the minors before being exposed or protected. Rizzotti, I believe, is heading into his 5th year. I need to take a careful look at the Pirates’ roster and system, but it seems that a trade to a team like that would make the most sense for both teams.
Not sure according to Matt Gelb, that number is 4 years for Rule 5:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20101104_Phils_claim_infielder_Rivero_off_waivers.html
Can anyone confirm this?
It seems that the Pirates are always changing over players.
Ryne Sanberg will not return to Cubs AAA affiliate to manage. He wouldn’t be a bad pickup for the Phillies as 1B coach and eventually more.
Players 19+ years old at the time they are signed have 4 years before Rule 5 eligibility. Players 18 and younger have 5 years.
6 year minor league free agents (BA- Eddy)
26
RHP- Jason Anderson (AAA), Alex Concepcion (AAA), Brandon Duckworth (AAA), Brian Gordon (AAA), Juan Sandoval (HI-A) , Jay Stephens (AA), Ty Taubenheim (AAA).
Oscar Villareal (AAA), Ehren Wasserman (AAA)
LHP- Kyle Carr (LO-A), Brian Mazone (AAA)
C- Joel Naughton (HI-A), Kevin Nelson (AA), John Suomi (AA)
1B- Andy Tracy (AAA)
2B- Keoni DeRenne (AA), Melvin Dorta (AAA)
SS- Ozzie Chavez (AAA) , Gabtiel Suarez (AA0
3B- Cody Ransom (AAA), Neil Sellers (AAA)
OF- Kevin Mahar (AA), Timo Perez (AA) , Ryne White (SS) , Mike Spidale (AA), Rich Thompson (AAA)
Glad that list is finally out. One name I’d give serious consideration to is Wladimir Balentien. Right handed hitter slugged .536 in Louisville and that takes into account a TERRIBLE month of April where it took him two weeks to get his batting average up to three digits.
Signed- Drew Rundle OF (LHP), Torre Langley, C, Dane Sardinha, C, Keoni Ruth , INF, Fidel Hernandez, INF
I guess now we know why Lopes isn’t here. They needed to save Sam Perlozzo’s job. Sign Samuel and move Sam to first. Wow that will do it. He can screw up there instead of third.
Let me thing Perlozzo-Lopes ,Perlozzo- Lopes. It is so hard to decide.
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: (OF) Bryce Harper.
from ba interesting
Harper’s been playing two days a week in the AFL for weeks now. He’s only got one game left before the end of the season.
I have to think that there’s more to the Lopes departure than meets the eye and we will probably know exactly what happened but I suspect money was only one issue and was the issue that made it easy for the team to take a public position on his leaving. As far as I can tell, this is a very significant loss. The only think I can compare it to is when you have a phenomenal pitching coach who leaves.
But the addition of Ryne Sandberg is probably a very good thing. It doesn’t balance out what happened to Lopes, but it is a positive development.
Catch, from the Phillies board there has been some reports that Davey Lopes is trying to position himself to be the Dodgers manager if Mattingly does not do well.
philabaltfan So Another example of baseball bs. Everyone has the right to position themself.
No Wheels, what does your reply mean? Your reply is very ambigous and confusing in that I was not criticizing either party.
PHILA- MLB- Sign Dan Meyer , LHP, to minor league deal with Spring Training invitation.
GCL- released Osmel Reyes, RHP
philabaltfan
It is my belief that Lopes was let go to save Sam’s job and that what the phils poster is a thin lie.
Dutch shortstop Nick Urbanus, 18, comes from a rich baseball tradition. His father Charles and grandfather Han won MVP awards in the Dutch major league, Hoofdklasse Honkbal.
Any updates on Naughton, Flande and Sanchez?
From the Philly team in Venezuela’s Liga Paralela stats could be some new players depending on if they bring these players to professional levels or they are in LigaParalela on a try-out basis.
http://www.ligaparalela.com.ve
New names could be 3B, another Pancho Herrera, and INF Luis Amaro, and a few others. Also playing Francisco Diaz, Carlos Perdomo, Bernardo Solarte, new signee Francisco Silva, and maybe the other (Anderson) Gonzalez (who might be listed as Gustavo Gonzalez) and various VSL roster players.
Dave Huppert landed in the Tigers’ organization. He’ll manage the Lakeland Flying Tigers next season.
andy tracy signed with the D-Backs.
BA transactions say: Release RHP Felix Cespedes. Once with 9 inning perfect game equivalent and (I believe) 16 K’s , but with time off for steroid induced suspension, all for Naught.
That’s ashame- he looked like a good pitching prospect, at least talent-wise. He had excellent numbers as an 18 year old in the DSL a couple of seasons ago.
http://www.eluniversal.com.co/cartagena/deportes/morelos-pidiendo
Found a signing , translation by me thinks it says: Jair Morelos – 16 year old OF from Cartagena, Columbia, signed by PHILA .
Looks like the old link was removed and replaced with current front page, it’s on there, found on 2nd page of Yahoo links under player name. Think this was a July 2 signing , but just started to play in Ligaparalela.
Not sure where to put this. I’m sure some of you remember Alfredo Simon when he was a hard throwing Phillies prospect 4 or 5 years ago. Now he’s a murder suspect.

7 “more” Non-Roster Invitees to Spring Training-
Delwyn Young IF-OF
Michael Schwimer, RHP
Michael Stutes, RHP
Tuffy Gosewisch, C
Joel Naughton , C (not previously listed as signed as minor leaguer this offseason)
Robb Quinlan, IF-OF
Brian Bass, RHP
Phillies signed former No. 1 pick Matt Anderson to a minor league contract. Seems like a reach.
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/phillies/Phillies_sign_former_No_1_overall_pick.html
DSL- San Lazaro Solano, RHP, suspended 50 games for Steroids.
(BA transactions)
PHILA- released Michael Durant 1B, and Mauricio Romero, RHP
As I look over the wealth of the organization, surely we can spare a few prospects to get
Joakim Soria. August and September : no runs, 4 BBs.
Phillies signed Cory Sullivan to a minor league contract. Nice signing for AAA depth. The Phillies really lack backup options at CF. Outside Shane Victorino, only Rich Thompson can really play CF every day.
BA Transactions-
PHILA-
Signed John Suomi, C
Released Keoni Ruth, INF
Phils have signed Castillo to a minor league deal. No brainer overall and virtually no salary commitment gives them the ability to evaluate him as a clubhouse fit. Nice signing Ruben
A couple days ago other sites reported 18 minor leaguers were let go, but you aren’t showing it in the transaction list yet. Also, only 10 were named initially, and only 2 other names have been suggested since. Can you get a full list, when you do include it ?
From the MiLB.com Dominican Summer League player pages the following players are shown as released:
Lissander Mejia, OF
Jose Trinidad, OF
There were numerous other moves down there over winter, but it looks like everything from February 17 to March 21 seems to have dissappeared down a black hole.
The only player in the system I can’t account for between last season and this seaon is Matt German. Anyone know what happened to him? Released, Retired, Injured?
Lakewood- ADD- Hector Neris, RHP, from XST
Demoted Jacob Borup to XST (injury)
German- his player page still shows him as active, so maybe an injury and he escaped the listing of XST players on here, or he was released earlier in the offseason without media notice, haven’t seen anything on him since last season.
Now it can be told:
from Baseball America:
Matt German, LHP, placed on Restricted list.
James Klocke, C, voluntarily retired.
Thanks Marfis, I was just about to post that even though I think you and I might be the only people that care…..now I can sleep well at night.
James Klocke and Matt German care.
Lakewood BlueClaws-

LVIP- add Chance Chapman, RHP, from RDG
RDG- add Jordan Ellis , RHP, from CLW
Any known reason for James Klocke’s retirement as his small sample suggested some promise?
RDG- acquired Paco Figueroa, INF, in trade from Norfolk Tides (Baltimore).
Now it has been made official:
PHILA/ VSL-
signed Manaure Martinez, RHP
——– Kelvi Rojas, RHP
———Liberio Bohorquez, RHP
Pedro Miranda , OF (brother of Jorge) placed on restricted list.
Hi, anybody has some information about Witer Jimenez and Carlos Valenzuela – both now playing in GCL??thnx in advance
I know they both went to States for XST, don’t know if they will make team, but haven’t checked yet , today. I think they have too much service time for the VSL, so I expect they make it. They will have skeleton crew in XST until draft.
Lakewood-
added Michael Dabbs, OF from XST
added Jacob Borup, RHP, from XST
released Steven Batts, IF
sent Hector Neris, RHP , to XST
VSL- signed RHP Severino Gonzalez (Panama)
3 Dominican players added to GCL (now in XST) squad:
Gabriel Arias, RHP
Carlos Best, RHP
Carlos Valenzuela, 3B
(Looks like they make it to GCL, and since Dominican League is scheduled to start in ~19 minutes, guys remaining on DSL roster that were invited to XST, unless they are brought up for start of GCL season, the more veteran ones I mean, might be looking iffy by now: had : Pedro Lora, LHP, Ramon Oviedo, RHP, Witer Jimenez, IF-OF, Jorge Castillo IF-OF, Yeisson Morales, 3B)
DSL- added Rommel Cepeda, C
DSL- added:
Francibel Alejo, LHP
Angelo Mora, SS (Switch Hitter)
(both ’93 birthdays, 2nd youngest at their position on team)
Not a transaction, but Naylor underwent TJ surgery on Tuesday…
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20110602_Phillies_Notes__Oswalt_surprised_he_was_lifted_for_pinch-hitter_in_Phillies_loss.html
So we have two players who are injured on the 40 man; giving flexibility if needed.
DSL- added :
from VSL restricted list- Pedro Miranda, OF
signed:
* Roberto Contreras, OF
Felix Santos, RHP
Gerard Vasquez, RHP
Henry Dottin, RHP
Pedro Emiliciano, RHP
Rivar Angulo, LHP
Luis DeLaCruz, RHP
Gregorio Santos, RHP
Welinton Cairo, LHP
Juan Marte, RHP
I have the roster at 39 now, supposed to be 4 over limit. Which raises question about players listed as on the XST roster who Have not appeared in a game yet: # Witer Jimenez, #Jorge Castillo, * Pedro Lora, Ramon Oviedo, maybe * Luis Gonzalez. Though not sure if last 2 pitchers were in games yet or not.
Yeah , Oviedo has appeared in the (last) game, so if my figuring is correct, that leaves the 4 listed as overages from the DSL roster, and they are likely still in XST- the 2 Switch Hitting IF-OF’s and the 2 LHP’s.
VSL- added the following 2 OF’s:
Herlis Rodriguez, (LHH)
Guatavo Martinez
Couple more for the barely 17 area age group.

And you don’t have to take Lavelle E. Neal III’s word for it either, as Singleton (Steve) played in the Lakewood game , 3B
LKW- Travis Mattair, 3B , promoted to CLW.
CLW- added Brandon Tritt, OF (born in 1985, just like Steve Singleton)

Good news for buck and nice to see an old friend get his

I believe Duke pitched well last night. Marfis do you have any word on him?
No, just that they took him off the DL recently. Seen him at State College early in the Short Season season, looked like some whip in his arm, short right hander for what that means.
LVIP- added Chance Chapman, RHP, from CLW
PHILA- signed LHP Robbie Cooper, (6’3 195, age 20) off of Windsor Selects club, formerly of Sierra College, from http://www.windsorstar.com
Keep the Canadiens coming, eh?
The Major League Baseball Draft has been a source of frustration for left-handed pitcher Robbie Cooper over the years.Passed over in the draft on more than one occasion, Cooper got a vote of support from a former Windsorite and it finally led to a professional contract. The six-foot-three, 195-pound Cooper has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s awaiting final word on if he’ll be sent to the club’s instructional league, but will head to spring training in March. “Things came up pretty quick,” the 20-year-old Cooper said. “I was talking to a couple of teams and this came out of nowhere.” Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame president and CEO Tom Valcke, who once served as the Canadian director of scouting for Major League Baseball, still keeps in touch with a few teams. “I do some private consulting,” said Valcke, who is a Windsor native. “Yeah, Philly’s one of those teams.” Cooper finished his collegiate career at Sierra College in Roclin, Calif., and returned home to play for the Windsor Junior Selects. Valcke was in Windsor last month for the Canadian Junior Baseball Championships. While he’s known about Cooper for years, Valcke walked away impressed after watching him throw a complete-game win in the gold-medal game against Mississauga. Cooper allowed seven hits and two walks in seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out nine in a 5-2 win by the Junior Selects. “He pitched the gold-medal game and he was a man among boys,” Valcke said. “I just told some people what I thought of him.” He got a chance to throw for the Detroit Tigers in Florida and also for Philadelphia. He was also set to throw for the Toronto Blue Jays, but jumped at the offer from the Phillies. “They had a better offer, so I chose the Phillies,” Cooper said. “This was something I was looking to do.” While Valcke may have told a few people about him, he said it was Cooper’s talent that sealed the deal. “I think Robbie Cooper got himself signed with his big body and big arm,” Valcke said. He joins an organization that’s very Canadian friendly. Former Blue Jays general manager Pat Gilliick remains an advisor with the Phillies after retiring. Philadelphia has Canadian infielder Peter Orr and righthander Scott Mathieson on its roster and another eight Canadians in the minors. “They treat everyone the same whether you’re a firstround pick or a free agent and they’ve got a pretty good number of Canadians in the system,” Cooper said
Ron, as long as they can be productive players they can continue to come to the Phillies. It is good to see that we are using our Canadian connections to good use.
CLW- released Mike McGuire, RHP
Fall Instructional League Roster up now on Larry Shenk’s blog.
addition not seen before by me: Giandido Tromp, OF,
found on him (PG) listed as SS, 5’11 160, B/R T/R
Jiandido, I mean. Also found, looks like, via his Facebook thing (picture of batter swinging right, so think it’s him) says he is 18, and other info on web leads me to believe he also plays 2B and comes from Aruba and played in their defeat of Bangor Maine in the last Senior League World Series.

yes
FYI Jiandido Tromp is an IF/OF in the Roman Quinn mode (5’11″, 160 with speed) recently signed out of Aruba.
Saw his name in some inter boxs and Aruba had him at 2nd.
Here’s some news:
VSL- Alejandro Arteaga, RHP, who finished season on VSL roster, has been suspended 50 games for Anabolic Steroid violations. http://www..milb.com article (VSL Phillies team page) said he is free agent now so apparently he was released after end of season. This would imply others have been released also, so , maybe organization doesn’t feel the need to make this public at this time.
Article states if he signs with another team, suspension will kick in. Article also states that of 41 players suspended for drug program violations, 6 have been members of Phillies organization.
VSL- (from the milb.com player pages)
Jean Calanche, RHP, released
in addition to: Alejandro Arteaga, RHP, released (as mentioned above)
VSL- Ronald Mendez, RHP
Audrys Mora , LHP
Suspended for 25 games, from Gelb on philly.com among other places
violations of Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
LVIP- Dane Sardinha, C, elected free agency.
Terrible. It’s going to take the Lehigh Valley staff a good 15 minutes to find a potted plant capable of producing a better OPS.
“Feed me Seymour, feed me”
GCL-
Nerio Rios, SS, activated from 60 day DL
Ryan Sasaki, LHP, activated from Restricted List
PHILA- outrighted Brandon Moss,OF and Pete Orr IF to LVIP>
PHILA- signed Drew Naylor, RHP
(BA)
name sounds familiar!
from ligaparalela:
here’s some names I haven’t seen before who may or may not sign to organization before next season:
Williams Cuicas, SS/INF
Hiomarvi Colmenarez, C (looks like he played on a 13.14 y.o. team in 2009 so may be 16 and has played a little, so, I say he and Cuicas who has played a little more and is SS are likely add-ons)
Pitchers-
Yoel Mecias (looks like one of the most active pitchers so far)
Hector Montilla
Sergio Velis
Joseph Carpabire
not alot of information on these players, but looks like they are participating some.
marfis…next time put the phonetic pronunciation next to their names. I can handle Joseph.
from BA transactions:
RELEASED:
Craig Fritsch, RHP
Siulman LeBron, RHP
Juan Morillo, RHP
Matthew Holland, 1B
Kenny Miramontes, SS
Nerio Rios, SS
Luis Amaro, OF
Jorge Castillo, OF-IF
Witer Jimenez, OF-IF
Juan Miranda, OF
Bernardo Solarte, OF
LeBron- lasted a couple of years after some had him gone- injured all last season- maybe injury related.
Morillo- 28- signed out of Japan, never suited up last season
Matthew Holland- drafted last draft
Miramontes- glowing reports after signing may have been off.
Nerio Rios- another SS, injured at end of season,
Luis Amaro- see, no nepotism
Witer Jimenez and Luis Castillo- The much maligned report of some Dominican lack of dedication at Williamsport maybe should have been given more credence.
Miranda and Solarte- out from the GCL.
The Williamsport and GCL level players released may signal a partial clearing of the decks toward placing most all of the most recent draft class at Williamsport or higher.
Rios and Solarte are the more important ones here. Rios was never very good but Solarte had flashes though he also could not stay healthy. The 2 comprised our big Latin American signings one year.
Not a big loss for anyone on the list as all have been passed by newer, younger draftees.
Pete Orr signed to a minor league contract with invitation to Spring Training.
PHILA- (minor league deals)
re-signed- Tuffy Gosewisch, C (BA transactions)
signed – Raul Valdes, LHP (MLBTR) (invitation to Spring Training -MLB)
Among contract details for new signees (The Zo Zone).

Make that Carlos Rivera, 1B
