I don’t want to add more work for you but would their level in the organization and possibly a grade make this look better?
Just a thought. Keep up the great work.

Is Carlos Monasterios no longer a prospect?
January 22, 2008 at 10:39 am
He’d have been #12 for RHP, behind Alex Concepcion for me. I only listed 10 guys, and it is our best position in terms of overall depth

are gonna post an explanation of why you ranked the way you did?

Are Matt Smith and Zack Segovia no longer under consideration for this list?
January 22, 2008 at 3:36 pm
See none of my pitchers made the lists: Andrew Cruse, Darren Byrd, Carlos Monasterios, and Moises Melendez. The organization must be deeper than I thought on the hill. Just hope that all the arms that broke down parts of last year on the lists can make it through a full season this year: Mathieson, Garcia, Happ, Brauer, Bisenius, and Pfinsgraff; plus get a few innings out of Drabek at some point. And Segovia can come back from surgery to pitch at his 06 form.

I think the Segovia ship has sailed. I saw him pitch in ST last year and I thought to myself - this guy’s got nothing left in the tank. I thought he was out of the organization, but perhaps not.

Segovia was hurt last season. He underwent a shoulder procedure in the offseason and according to Arbuckle (via phillybaseballnews), he’s been rehabbing in Clearwater and is looking good. If healthy, Segovia could bounce back.

Where would Joe Savery be if the Phillies used him at 1B only and not a pitcher. I think he may be #1 or 2, this speaks to our lack of depth in the organization in my opinion. Where would you rank him James?

#1

Catcher- I’ve seen both Jaramillo, and Marson. I like both.
1B- In this organization age, 3 yrs won’t make a difference,
I like Urick, all round will help any team! German blood, young body, matures late.
2B-Harmon without a doubt!
3B- Clay Harris, stops a lot of balls at the corner, hits with power! Sen him play has the corner down!
SS-Donald hands down! All the tools.
LF-Berry
CF- Golsen!!!! Seen him, Strong all round palyer!
RF-Slayden- Saw him first at Lakewood 25(26 in July) yrs old should make him a non- prospect as far as PP’s concerned? May have the best swing in the Phills ML system! Great arm too!
RHSP-Carasco, Mathieson 25?, Carpenter
LHSP-Outman, Happ 24?
R- Overholt-24?
Most of these guys played in Clearwater last year…Champs!

The site preaches it’s OPES (Offensive Prospect Evaluation Process). This part is taken right off Michael Murelo’s site- “Michael, a former professional scout, has been a fan of minor league baseball all his life. His work on the OPES system of prospect evaluation grew out of an interest in objectively evaluating minor league players. His hope is that it will enlighten what for many is a dark corner of the baseball world.
Michael wishes to thank John Benson and Tony Bergamino for there groundbreaking work in the area of prospect evaluation, Bill James, the father of Sabermetrics, for his dedication to the cause of understanding this great game, and John Sickels of ESPN/Stats Inc. for the inspiration to start this website.”
The point I’m trying to make is this. According to the OPES system here is a list of the TOP offensive players in the Phillies organization of about 90 position players.
OPES Ranked 1- 600
88 - J. Donald, ss
98 - L. Marson, c
168- A. Cardenas, 2b
169- B Harman, 2b
173- G. Golson, of
308- J. Slayden, of
517- W. Biaz, 3b
538- J. Urick, 1b
That’s 8 players out of 2700 position players in six levels of minor league ball! Unless I missed someone? Just remember there are approximately 180 players per position in the minors. So in in Urick’s case, (the lowest ranked player of the eight), is the 90th ranked player of approximately 180 1b prospects. He also is in the top 20% of hitters in minor league baseball. More AB’s would have given him a giant leap in the rankings.
Of those eight players fore mentioned, all but Cardenas played for the Championship Clearwater team.
