Reading Pitching Chatter

Some recent comments made by Reading pitching coach Steve Shrenk on the performance of a number of members of the Reading staff:

Mike Stutes — (on his last start) “He established his fastball a little better, he was down in the zone…the walks really hurt him.  He is throwing his change up better like he was at the beginning of the year, still working on the breaking ball, trying to do too much at times but getting better” Read the rest of this entry »

Reading Pitchers

Reading pitching coach Steve Shrenk had some interesting comments yesterday about several pitchers on the RPHILS staff.

On Joe Savery’s last start–”Joe could have went 7 innings…he did a great job, his command was much better, it was the first time he was really aggressive with his fastball, down in the zone with it…He has been working hard, making adjustments.  Obviously, you dont want to walk guys and he has had some games when he has done that but last night he went after guys and made pitches….He threw some good change ups and sliders as well, his arm spped was good , and he caused some bad swings…The big thing for Joe is to have fun and be aggressive, enjoy what he is doing, enjoy the game and not put too much pressure on himself.” Read the rest of this entry »

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (05/11 – 05/17)

Welcome to yet another edition of the Reading Phillies weekly report.  Time constraints have limited the report this week to just the “prospect watch” section.  It is probably for the best anyway, as the Phils went 2-5 on the week and now sit at 19-15 on the season, good for 3rd in the Eastern League.  To the prospects…

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (5/04 – 5/10)

It was yet another good week for the Phils as Reading went 4-2 on the week and now sit at 17-10, good for 3rd in the entire Eastern League.  A pattern emerged this week as the Phils continually rode good pitching and good enough hitting to their 4 victories.  The offense was without Taylor for most of the week, so that may have been the final blow to an already lackluster bunch.  Oh well, the pitching prospects shined and with the Philadelphia Phillies struggling with run prevention, this group has got to bring a smile to your face when you think of the future.  The game recaps and prospect highlights are after the break.  Enjoy.

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (4/20 – 5/3)

I know this is a bit long, but it encompasses two weeks worth of action due to my critically ill daughter, oops, I meant computer.  No really, I did.  I hope everyone enjoys the goodness that Reading has to offer and comments it up.  Have fun!

Over the past two weeks, the Phillies have had some phenomenal individual efforts by the likes of Stutes, Worley, Bastardo, and Taylor.  Even with these efforts, however, the Phils found themselves only going 7-5 over that two week span.  Despite the mediocre record, I think the teams play thus far is above what most of us expected.  Surprisingly, the Phils sit at 13-8 and are tied for 3rd in the Eastern League.  Not surprisingly, the pitching has really carried the team while the offense has mostly been a one man show featuring Michael Taylor.

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (04/20 – 04/26)

Hello everyone.  Here is the deal.  My 6 year old computer’s health has sadly taken a turn for the worst.  Lets just call it critical condition.  Anyway, this means that I am not going to be able to publish the Reading Phillies weekly report for this week (I might write something up in a few days time when I get my hands on a working computer).  So, I am very sorry for missing a week, but, like I said, hopefully I will be back up and running shortly.  Feel free to talk about all of the awesome Reading news this week like their 4-2 record, Stutes’ 6 innings of 2 hit ball, the return of the hefty lefty, Mike Zagirthski (yes, that can be taken out of context, but lets not), the continued domination of the buzzsaw, Matt German, Bastardo’s conversion to the starting rotation, and much, much more.  Quite a week, actually, I am sorry I missed the  report.  Thanks for your understanding and go Phils.

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (4/13 – 4/19)

The Reading Phillies continued their good start to the ‘09 season with a 4-2 week.  The tremendous  pitching from week 1 has deteriorated into mediocre pitching, but the offense stepped it up this week allowing the Phillies to escape with some close victories.  Lets take a closer look at the games.

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (6/25 – 7/1)

The Reading Phillies had a nice week, going 4-3 to up their record to an unimpressive 33-49, which is good for last place in the Eastern League Southern Division. There were a few notable performers throughout the week including Durbin, Bisenius, Outman, and of course, Slayden. First, lets get caught up on what took place during the week in the game recaps.

Reading Phillies Weekly Report (6/18 – 6/24)

Hello, everyone. This is my first report on the Reading Phillies. Hopefully, many more will follow. I am far from experienced when it comes to writing posts, so, if anyone has any suggestions I would be thrilled to hear them. I hope you enjoy the weekly reports on the Reading Phillies, which will usually be posted on Thursday of every week. Lets get to it…

The Reading Phillies won 3 and lost 5 on the week, dropping their record to an Eastern League Southern Division worst, 29-46. Luckily, the minor leagues are about the prospects and not the standings. Several big name prospects, most notably pitchers, had good weeks. Here are the game by game recaps.

Reading Phillies Weekly Roundup

Much like the big-league club, this year’s Reading Phillies are off to a so-so start. At 4-4, they’re in the middle of the pack in the Eastern League Southern Division. They started off hot, taking three of four from the Altoona Curve to open the season, but have cooled down and lost their last three straight games.

By now, I’m sure most of you have heard about OF Greg Golson hitting the tar out of the ball. After 8 games, Golson’s batting a tidy .323 with three doubles, a triple, and seven steals, all while tying for the team lead in runs scored with five. It looks as if his winter spent with Charlie Manuel has helped Golson up his game. However, before we sing his praises and worship him as the savior of the Phils minor-league chain, it’s important to note that his OBP is only .344, while his K-BB ratio is 8-1 on the young season. Golson’s going to have to get on base more often before he can really display one of his most impressive tools — his speed. His season is certainly one to keep an eye on as he looks to possibly earn a call-up during September.

Updated Minor League Rosters ST Week 4

Alright gang, here are this week’s updated minor league rosters. You can compare this to the week 3 roster and week 2 rosterand week 1 roster that I had posted earlier if you would like.

Quite a few cuts all in around in the minors this week, with one more round left to go this week before minor league rosters are finalized next Monday.

I’ll keep on the lookout for each new officially posted roster and keep them updated here as needed.

I don’t know how much of a limb I am going out on to project this, but I have updated my Clearwater Threshers website with this (click here) as my projected 2008 line up. The projection is based on the latest 2008 ST roster mixed in with a little intuition. I’m guessing I’ll have about 20 of the 25 players correct, with a few free agent signings thrown in at the last minute just to mess things up and maybe a few other moves in the mix.

Updated 2008 Minor League Rosters (Workout Groups)

I hit the Carpenter Complex to check out the first day of minor league games.  It was the Clearwater (Group 3) team and the Lakewood (Group 4) teams against the Orioles.  Nothing of terrific interest to report except that I did pick up the newly updated minor league rosters.  This version has the guys broken out into five groups not four like the previous version that I had posted a while back. The Andrew Carpenter Interview

andrewcarpenter.jpg

First and foremost… I’ve always called you Andrew, but I keep seeing you referred to as “Drew” Carpenter around the net.  Which is it…Drew or Andrew?

Andrew

I know from talking with you earlier that you said you’ve been in Clearwater working out since January to try to be in better shape this year than you were last year. What sort of goals have you set for yourself in 2008?

I think everyone’s goal each year is to get to Philly because I know mine is. Other than that they are to win another championship, to keep my team in every ball game to give them a chance to win, to keep progressing on my changeup and making that better, and now in AA maybe get a couple of hits this year.

An Interview with Jason Donald

jasondonald.jpg

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Jason Donald during Spring Training and ask him a few baseball questions.

Jason, you started 2007 in Lakewood before finishing in Clearwater. What were the biggest differences between low-A and high-A baseball?

I think the biggest difference between high A and Low A was as with any level you move up, the game is a little bit sharper and quicker. Plus, there are some older pitchers with more experience that know how to pitch a little bit more. Better off speed and they can use that effectively when they were behind in the count.
