Aaron Altherr In Tonight’s Philadelphia Lineup

Just a quick note – Aaron Altherr will make the start in left field tonight for the Phillies. Altherr was called up in June while Tony Gwynn was on bereavement and took one PA, and he was recalled yesterday when Dom Brown went on the paternity list. The German-bron Altherr, nicknamed “The Rhineland Rocket” (by me – I am beating it into the ground, folks), OPSed .930 in June at AA Reading, but is OPSing .688 on the season between two MiLB levels.

  1. Good. I’m not one of those people that thinks Mayberry is a terrible ballplayer. He would be quite serviceable if used correctly However, at this point, let this kid get a few at bats and see how he responds. What do they have to lose. He’ll be back down in two days anyway. Maybe he get his first big league hit out of the way tonight and he is soaring when he goes back down to AA.

  2. MLB.com has Altherr’s ETA as 2015 so in effect it is about a year early for him….be it as an emergency call-up, but still an opportunity for the youngster and something I am sure he welcomes.
More then likely, sometime next year, he very well could be the 4th/5th on the team.

  3. Good for him. He has a shot to get his first major league hit. Who knows when this opportunity will ever come again.

  4. Must be a great feeling to call your parents and tell them you are starting in left field for the big club. Congrats to Aaron and his folks!

  5. One more comment 3 years ago when gillies got protected. I said mistake!! Then collier is another mistake. Castro has proven himself at every level. Showtime is now.

  6. Philly beats reporting Altherr is optioned again. My gut says it’s in favor of Sizemore, but it could be Ruf (probably not quite ready yet) or Castro.
