Tyson Brummett Joining Phillies

Coming into the 2012 season, Philadelphia was one of the last places I believed that Tyson Brummett would end up. However combine a very good season with several injuries and a very over used Phillies bullpen and what you get is a major league salary and the fulfillment of a dream for Brummett in the final days of the 2012 season.

Brummett, 28, was the Phils 7th round pick in the 2007 draft.  He has moved up steadily through the system but has never been overpowering and had, in fact struggled in both 2010 and 2011, splitting time between Reading and Lehigh Valley.

Things changed this year. Brummett was asked to bounce back and forth from the bullpen into the rotation and had a very good year, going 5-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 44 games (6 starts) between starting and relieving.  Brummett was asked to be an emergency starter several times by Lehigh Valley and filled in admirably on nearly every occasion, while also pitching with renewed confidence out of the bullpen.  I wouldn’t expect much more than a few serviceable innings out of Brummett who has not thrown in a game since August 31st, but he surely will make his major league debut at some point with Tyler Cloyd getting shut down for the year.

  1. Good luck. Tyson!

I love it when guys who work hard for years finally get a call to the big leagues. I remember a guy many years ago named Leroy Reams who played 8 or 9 years in the minor leagues. One day, the Phillies made the call, and he was able to get one at-bat as a major leaguer. That was the extent of his major league career.

I was at that game, and for some reason that moment has stayed with me. I am still proud of Leroy Reams for staying with it for so long, and I am happy that I was in the stands sharing his big moment with him.

I just looked up Leroy Reams to make sure my memory was not playing tricks on me, and sure enough, May 7, 1969, Leroy Reams became a major leaguer.

    I was there!

  2. Congratulations to him for making the show regardless of the circumstances around it. Bullpen has been overworked and with the Tuesday bullpen game looming this makes sense. They probably outright him off the roster after the season but nothing to argue about this.

  3. Congrats Tyson! Well deserved, I guess this is the bright side to a down season, more players now get an opportunity.

  4. Great rework for a drafted guy done good for himself and by the organization. Smart play.

Please tell me the Phillies released Martinez to make room 🙂

  5. Having watched Brummett, my view of him is that he is a poor man’s Chad Durbin. I don’t say that to be critical, but descriptive. This was a smart move for the team (why risk a guy like Pettibone in a situation like this?) and nice for Brummett who now has his cup of coffee.
