  1. Alec says:

Anyone know if they’re going to stretch Watson out more? Are they just limiting his innings?

    • Murray says:

They said they were worried about the number of innings he’s already pitched this year so I don’t expect him to throw too much.

      • FlyByNite says:

Yea. I’ve noticed of the HS pitchers that the Phillies sign they tend to limit the innings the most of those from warm weather states who likely have logged more innings during the course of the year.

    • tonyg22 says:

A lot of these guy’s will though, think Watson should be #1 in top 100. So many are jealous of BA’s success. Anybody’s sources know who the Phil’s will get for Blanton. ’11 pick?

  2. Buy sell says:

Ethan Martin — excellent 1st wReading… And Ruf is really ready.. Hopefully Ruf, Castro, Cloyd, Cesear, Aumount, DeFastus would be ready for call up in Sept…

    • Anonymous says:

Well Hector Luna just got called up to the Phillies with Ruiz to the DL maybe Ruf gets his call up.

    • Evan says:

Maybe Ruf, no Castro, Yes Cloyd, Aumont, and De Fratus. Hernandez is on the 40 Man much like J.C. Ramirez, so they may be called up

  3. ramsey says:

Joseph with another nice game. Martin with one of his best outings of the year (only 1 BB!). Morgan another nice start. Tocci keeps on hitting. Good performances from a lot of our top prospects!

Ruf with two bombs. The saga continues.

  4. Murray says:

You have to be excited about Tocci, it boggles the mind what a 16 yr old kid is doing. He’s not even old enough to put on muscle yet, amazing potential. Love seeing Ruf doing well. The Phls not promoting him suggests they don’t think he’s a prospect but you never know. Martin’s start was terrific and gets my hopes up…

  5. C says:

Get used to Joseph and Ethan Martin playing together for long time.

  6. Anonymous says:

what are the reviews on Ruff in left? Is he worse than Ibanez or Burrell defensively. If he is gonna hit, I don’t care if he is slow, as long as he gives it his all and makes the routine plays.

    • Anonymous says:

      He seemed capable in Trenton

    • Phillies_Aces35 says:

Would make him a very valuable (and very cheap) bench bat going forward (which is what I think his ceiling is, although I’m more than happy to be wrong either way).

      • LarryM says:

Maybe I’m getting too caught up in the hype … but if (a big of) he can play left adequately, I think there is a small chance he might be more. To make the obligatory Rizzotti comparison, Ruff’s season is more in context with his prior minor league career, and less babip driven. Not saying it’s likely he will be more, but possible. Not to mention the fact that Ruff is apparently better defensively, and maybe can play in left.

His problem, like a lot of guys who don’t hit AA till their mid twenties, is that he may not get a shot. For understandable reasons, don’t get me wrong, the point is he is up against his age in two senses – it legitimately lowers his ceiling, and it lowers the chance that he gets a shot.

        • LarryM says:

Ran his major league equivalents – .247/.328/.423 – obviously borderline for a left fielder, though a slightly better OPS than Pierre FWIW. But he could certainly do a little better than that – again, a long shot for a number of reasons, and a valuable, cheap, bench piece – again, assuming he can play left – is probably the realistic upside. But stranger things have happened. This season is not out of context for him by any means.

          • Nick says:

At worse, can he be like a Gregg Dobbs type but with more power? Play LF and IB, start for a stretch of game if a starter goes down and not kill you? Or, maybe a better comparison is can he be better than Mayberry offensively? (while playing an average LF and IB?)

I remember watching that Clearwater game last year when Oswalt and Utley were on the rehabs (I think during the all star break…it was on TV) and I was impressed by Ruf. I knew he was old for that league but he stood out. I liked the way he swung.

            • Alan says:

Realistically, Dobbs never would have made the majors if he didn’t play third base. And I think Dobbs had as much power as Ruf. He could rake.

          • ramsey says:

Ruf has hit at the same rate at every level thus far. I don’t think he will hit this well in the majors, but there’s no reason to think he’s stopped developing as a hitter.

  7. Jack Burns says:

Will Tocci go to Williamsport next year or Lakewood?? Hopefully he can develop into a great player cause the phillies certainly need outfielders in the near future.

    • Chris says:

Probably depends on what he does in the offseason. Because of his age they are probably going to take it slow with him though.

    • jmb4028 says:

Ben Badler (BA) who has written about Tocci replied to my tweet around him. Said that likely WPT, but outside possibility of LWD. Noted that it would depend on how he matures physically over the offseason.

My feelings are he gets given a small taste of LWD, a couple games a week, then goes to WPT for full-time action for the short-season ball.

  8. sam soap says:

Roman quinn and tyler greene 0-8 8 ks…yikes

  9. Puddnhead says:

A nice effort from JDT today (Saturday) 4H, 1R. He has performed well recently. Pullin with two more hits. Cozens sinking daily.

    • Mike Honcho says:

I’m going to guess Cozens struggles of late have a lot to do with hitting a wall. He’s finished a full high school baseball season, been drafted, picked baseball over football, moved across the country, been coached up and down and played serious ball deeper into the summer than he likely ever has before. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Williamsport or Lakewood (I hope) next year.

  10. Jumpin' says:

103 pitches in 6 innings for Martin but only 1 walk. Must have been a lot of deep counts.

  11. wayneswhirld says:

Not a big setback for Adam Morgan – 1 BB, 7 Ks in five innings. According to the recap, two of the five singles he gave up to Lakeland in the 5th inning – all with two outs – were infield hits.

  12. Buy sell says:

I think the current FO regime keeps these 25 yo down on the pharm where they languish and they never see the light of the ML -(even though many of them deserve to be given a shot)

    • TheAnswer333 says:

yeah cause the phillies dont want the best players on their team. they keep guys that would help their team down in the minors just because they feel like it.

has nothing to do with the players themselves, their age, their abilities, who’s ahead of them on the major league depth chart.

the phillies are just holding these guys down.

i mean look at all the success the rizz and scott mathieson have gone on to after getting away from the evil phillies front office….

      awesome post

  13. Max says:

I was at the game last night and noticed a few things:

Martin has a nasty curveball and I couldn’t tell how fast his fastball was because the radar gun seemed off on a lot of pitches.

Joseph is a big dude and definitely looked confident at the plate. His approach is a little off though as he was swinging at the first pitch in every at bat.

Castro and Ruf both have good power and I think they could both be good 4th outfielders.

  14. roccom says:

Well we are starting to see why cozens was not top 500, he is fading fast, greene is showing nothing for a first round choice, but its early in there careers, just sometimes people get so high on a guy,in the gcl or williamsport, its too early in a guys career, and the competion isn’t the greatest at these levels,

    • Mitch Rupert says:

I think there’s plenty to be excited about with Greene and even the early success with Cozens. A 19-year old playing in the New York-Penn League is facing competition like he’s never faced before. There’s a big difference, as you well know roccom, between a 22 or 23-year old college pitcher with 3-5 years of D1 college pitching versus a guy like Greene who comes from a town as small as his and wasn’t a full-time baseball player until this spring. The success and failures aren’t always in the numbers at this level. More importantly is seeing their work ethic, their approach to the game, their ability to make adjustments and their ability to take instruction and utilize it to get better. But when positive things happen on a consistent basis for a couple weeks at a time, it’s something to get excited about because it shows the natural talent level is there to succeed, it just needs to be refined and harnessed.

      • Guess_Who says:

Let’s not jizz our jeans before they succeed at Lakewood, before they’re about to turn 22 years old (not mentioning any names).

  15. Steve (Tampa) says:

Cesar trying to take Freddy’s spot on next year’s big club. And he might accomplish just that.

T Greene. Oh boy. How bout shutting him down a few weeks early? Sustained 40% K rate. That’s not an easy feat to accomplish

  16. Art D. says:

Cesar would look good at 2nd base in ’13…if only to play some at LV and some with the big club. Break-in time. We know Utley will be given plenty of days off in ’13.

    • Phillies_Aces35 says:

I’d love to see him turn into an Omar Infante type. That kind of player has a ton of value on a MLB contender.

      • Alan says:

The problem is, can he play a position other than second base? He hasn’t since 2008. And if he can’t, that makes it really difficult to carry him as a bench piece.

    • Snood says:

Asche, Tocci, and Cozens out. I just can’t.
(Thank you for posting this, though, even if it was written by a fool).

    • Anonymous VOR says:

Predictable bad list from bleacher report.
      1. No Cody Asche
      2. Adam Morgan is at #19
      3. Tocci is only honorable mention
      4. Darin Ruf ranked higher than Asche, Morgan and Tocci

The good about the list: no Knigge or Friend, and Cloyd is only honorable mention

    • jmb4028 says:

Any list that still has Jiwan James on it is a bad list.

    • Jumpin' says:

Bleacher Report is one of those opposite things.

Read it then think the opposite.

Unbelievably bad observations by complete amateurs.

    • Alan says:

Bleacher Report is the worst thing ever to happen to the internet. I shouldn’t have to click through 26 pages to read a top 25.

  17. jmb4028 says:

Seth Rosin gets the start for Clearwater tonight.

  18. BJ says:

If Tocci was from the US, hed be getting ready to start his Jr year of HS. That means he wouldnt even be able to get drafted until 2014 where he would have played in GCL or not at all. Who knows where he’ll be playing in 2the years. I hope he’s at least in Clearwater.

    • anon1 says:

Someone posted here a month or so ago, the next Bryce Harper or mIke Trout…not sure about all that, but will take something a little less.

  19. Evan says:

Adam Morgan…yes that Adam Morgan, was sent down to Lakewood. Does anybody know if it is to just clear a roster spot because he pitched yesterday, and he will be brought back up on Wednesday for his next start, or is it the less than one percent chance he got sent down?

    • Tom B says:

Maybe they needed a roster spot for Rosin. Absolutely no chance he got sent down

    • jmb4028 says:

They just named him minor league pitcher of the month. If he was sent down, it was only for roster room.

    • Anonymous says:

I would suspect roster room, and I would not be terribly surprised if they sent him to Reading when they need to make the next roster move with him

    • gregg says:

There is NO WAY he is legitimately going to Lakewood. Clearly to fill a short term roster spot until his turn in the rotation comes up.

  20. Alec says:

Mario Hollands was sent down to Clearwater, any possible promotions or was it just to make room for Ethan Martin?

  21. Phillies_Aces35 says:

Pettitbone with a solid start and Valle with a bomb. Nice to have some prospects beyond Brown at AAA.

  22. Anonymous says:

I hear a lot about all the struggling Prospects at Williamsport such as Quinn,Walding & the Greens. How they can’t hit & their k rate is high or they are o for 20. But it seem to me that the whole team struggles with their hitting and that includes a lot of the older guys. my question is this, maybe it’s not so much the players but more on who is teaching & helping these guys with their hitting. Because it doesn’t seem to be working with any of them. How can almost every player on a team be hitting this bad.Don’t get me wrong each of them has had a week here & there where they do OK, but nothing consistent from anyone.I thought this is the level they are developing these kids but they seem to be going in the other direction.I know there are going to be struggles, but everyone on the team from the high school players to College all – Americans.Just a thought.
