  1. Steve (Tampa) says:

I can’t recall a past short-season team that I found as interesting as this year’s Crosscutters team. Up and down the lineup

Both Serritella and L Greene have shown an early tendency to take walks which is quite the turn from our usual ‘toolsy but can’t recognize a breaking pitch’ type of draftee. I hope this trend continues.

I was a bit disappointed to see Pointer moved to Williamsport, but now that he’s here I’d love to see a reduced K rate. It could be overlooked at Lakewood but 30%+ K rates at short-season is something of a red flag

    • Rei de Bastoni says:

Does Larry Greene have more walks than Valle yet? Hehe.

      • Mark says:

Even though he’s hitting .188, L. Greene has a .409 OBP and a .722 OPS. Love the patience he’s showing this early.

        • Patrick says:

I totally agree. His wOBA is a hearty .410 according to fangraphs, which more accurately reflects his offensive performance thus far. Keep up the walk totals, maintain the patience. We all know the power is there.

      • Mike Honcho says:

Larry Greene is two walks away from Anthony Hewitt’s entire debut GCL season in 2008 (33 games).

  2. Sammy says:

I’m not sure how others feel but I personally prefer the links. I like to drill into the player pages for stats. Also I’m not very interested in dsl and vsl so I can just click on the links that interest me.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes… Agree about DSL and VSL. We should just post links because it’s annoying to scroll down more to get to the teams we care about. It’s infinitely easier to click a link to the teams we care about and sort through opposing team stats. Infinitely less effort.

    • nick 47 says:

I think posting just the links would be easier for the powers at be also. As far as the VSL and DSL I check in on those pages every week or so. They are to far out to check everyday. Thanks for the good work keeping the site going.

      Nick

      • bergeraj says:

I check the VSL because the Pitching is almost always dominant those kids are probably old for the league but they strike out a ton and give up little in hits and walks.

        • Tiggerhawk says:

No, the VSL Phillies are by far the youngest team in the league, and it isn’t even close–particularly when you take into account who are the position “regulars” and starting pitchers. And they just added a 17 year old RF & a 16 year old LH starter.

    • C says:

Can I make a suggestion on posting links. Have it launch into a new tab so that I don’t need to keep hitting back button to get back into here. Just add this to html: target=”_blank”

      • Blues says:

You know to just right click and open in new tab or page…or hold the touch on your phone to open in new tab. Just as easy

  3. Dylan says:

@cody_smasche: Off to Baltimore then to Bowie.. Excited for the new experiences and challenges ahead

@jimcallisBA: $450k if they’d pay tax. Not as sure on that one. @*****dylan: Will #Phillies sign Alec Rash? Can go over slot by like 200k? #mlbdraft

  4. Anonymous says:

Well, board was split on sending asche up… im happy with the move and looking forward to seeing how it plays out!

  5. anon1 says:

Walding smoking, 6 RBIS and a HR. Tyler Greene possibly coming on now.

  6. JMills says:

I am happy for Asche but was hoping to see him July 3 at Clearwater. I will have to catch him at Reading. Looks like Walding could be soon pushing Cody.

    • Dylan says:

According to Mitch Rupert, he is a work in progress at third but will def. stick at 3B and the Phillies have no intentions on moving him back to SS. Walding had a throwing error, but that is to be expected while making adjustments. Supossively Quinn is turning some heads at SS.

      • Forrest says:

        3 errors though last night

        • Anonymous says:

Follow Mitch Rupert on twitter and read his articles, and you’ll get more details on Quinn’s errors. Nothing to be worried about.

      • Anonymous says:

Saw Williamsport play Thursday night. Walding did not look comfortable dealing with anything hit hard. He did make some nice plays and balls hit softly where he was able to charge the ball. Quinn looked pretty good with the glove, but accuracy on throws was an issue. Threw one ball into right field on what I thought should have been a double play ball. The CF (Olmo) played one ball into a triple (broke in and it went over his head) and completely lost another in the lights leading to a double. The defense as a whole was not good, with the exception of Pointer in RF who did make some nice plays.

  7. Jon says:

They’re not pitching to Darin Ruf it seems. 5 walks in the last two games.

  8. Hstand says:

Got to go see Williamsport last night and what a game. Some things that stuck out to me.
    1. LG is a huge guy but still has some speed. Im looking forward to seeing him as he gets stronger.(he has a barrel as a body but his arms are going to get bigger and stronger) He has some speed and hope he can stick in LF. His one error last night was a bobble after he didn’t get a good jump on the ball.
Also his patience at the plate was good. You could see in his one strikeout that he just wanted to hit and the pitchers weren’t getting him anything.

    2. Roman Quinn is fast but a few times last night he was looking frustrated. He hit 2 balls that could have fallen but got unlucky. and then in the 7th he bunted and because of his speed caused a bad throw to 1st. he ended up on 3rd and came in 2 batters later. He just has game changing speed. His glove needs alot of work. 2 of his errors (boxscore says he had 2 errors. I counted 4) last night just looked like mental lapses, the other was an over the shoulder bloop into the outfield that was a really tough play. He was getting good jumps on ground balls, just couldn’t get the ball into his glove.

3 Walding was crazy last night. His opposite field hr was a no doubter.probably 25 feet over the already tall Bowman field walls. He was just getting hit after hit. his error was caused by him bobbling the grounder to his back hand and then rushed the throw. But overall he looked really really good. 6 rbi’s will do that.

    4. Nicholas Hanson looked good too. Better than his numbers seem. Wasn’t helped by 3 errors from his infield.

The whole team looked pretty good at the plate. Except Pointer. Looked lost at the plate a few times.

Overall this team is going to be so much fun to watch and our big 4 TG, LG, Quinn and Walding look they are making some good progress.

  9. sam soap says:

Im glad T Greene got two hits because all the “he’s a bust” comments were tough to sift thru

    • Anonymous says:

About as tough as sifting through the “he’s a future star” stuff was last year after 70-odd ab’s?

  10. Chris says:

Anyone know when we might see Tocci play or what he’s up to?

  11. Murray says:

Nice to see Asche get moved up, it was an obvious move. Knigge will go up shortly also. WPort is definitely the first box score I look at. Let’s also hope that Martinez hits at CWater, it has to feel better for him. It’s nice seeing a few guys hitting for a change. We’ll all be watching Asche.

  12. Patrick says:

Surprised that nobody’s commented on this yet, but Utley recorded his first steal of his rehab assignment last night and he played the entire game at 2nd. Sure, the bat isn’t up to speed yet, but obviously things are progressing very well.

    • Steve (Tampa) says:

The steal is a good sign, but I believe its the lateral movements in the field that are the most challenging. I’m seeing reports of his return as early as next week. Hopefully he can spark the big club

      • Forrest says:

I would still think the quick explosion of taking off is a good sign

        • Phillies_Aces35 says:

It is but that’s not where he feels pain. If you remember last year he was stealing bases left and right in the playoffs and never stopped hustling down the first base line.

The most important part is his fielding at this point. I still go back to that Jayson Stark article where Jimmy Rollins talked about how Chase suffered going up the middle and what not.

  13. C says:

Question for board. I am living in south jersey (mount laurel) and have yet to see minor league game in person. Williamsport team seems particularly appealing to see. Anyone in same area of me go to these games? Which phillies team is closest to see? thanks

  14. Phillies_Aces35 says:

Phillies are going to need a spot starter on Monday… looks like we’ll find out tonight if Cloyd’s that guy.

    • bergeraj says:

I dont see how it is messed up at all, Everyone is going at normal spots and Lee is still pitching the makeup game. Monday is normal rest for Blanton!

      • Anonymous says:

They need a spot starter on Wednesday, KK pitches today, Cliff and Cole on Sunday, Joe on Monday, Worley on Tuesday. They either need a spot starter or they would have to pitch Cole or Cliff on 3 days rest. Cloyd would have to pitch on 3 days rest if he starts tonight so if he only goes 4 or 5 innings, that could be an indication.

      • Phillies_Aces35 says:

The Phillies website had TBA on Monday so that’s where I got it from… whoops

  16. Mitch Rupert says:

Brock Stassi has been promoted from Williamsport to Lakewood and Cameron Perkins has been promoted from the GCL to Williamsport.

    • jmb4028 says:

Williamsport becomes even more interesting. Poor GCL…

    • Anonymous VOR says:

With Perkins now up in Williamsport, there is not much room in the Crosscutters’ lineup. When Carmona signs, he will most likely have to play 1B/DH. Who is considered the better hitter? Carmona or Serritella? It would seem that the better hitter, may have to get pushed to Lakewood, so they can all get at-bats.

      • Mitch Rupert says:

Perkins is working out at first base, looks like he’s there to stay. I can’t imagine at this point they’d take ABs away from Walding, even with Carmona. I guess someone would have to get pushed to Lakewood.

  17. Markymark says:

Is brock stassi anything? I dont know much about him.

    • Mitch Rupert says:

Probably nothing more than organizational filler. But he’s a true pro. Gives you quality at-bats, hits line drives and plays great defense at first base. Saved this Williamsport team a handful of errors already.

    • Handzus says:

Unlikely since he’s a 23 YO in A ball who really hasn’t hit at all. Not a lot of plate appearances but the best thing to say about him so far is he doesn’t strike out very much.

  18. Alec says:

Anyone know when we will see the debuts of Watson and Gueller?

    • Steve (Tampa) says:

and Zach Green. I know they’ve been assigned to GCL so I suspect we’ll see their debuts soon

      • Anonymous says:

Better question is when will we see Cloyd’s debut in Philly. This Kyle Kendrick thing is getting really old. He goes 2-0 on every hitter, he just has no courage to throw strikes. Need to put him back in his long man / mop up role and take a shot with Cloyd for a few weeks.

  19. psujoe says:

To piggy back on an article a little while ago, Friend needs to be bumped up. He;s dominating in a ridiculous fashion. Why is he being held back?

    • catch22hman says:

Because he is blocked. Aumont and Rosenberg are competing for closing time. Knigge is blocked at Clearwater too because of Friend at AA. These things always resolve themselves over time.

  20. jmb4028 says:

Relief pitchers aren’t ever blocked. They all don’t have to close.
