  1. Jar says:

Good to see Brown get a few hits.

  2. Victor Filoromo says:

    Brown… he’s ALIIIIIIIIVE

  3. john says:

at what point do we worry about colvin? Can’t find anything in the stats to be happy about.

  4. Nowheels please says:

I wonder if Brown has been sitting with Sandberg. I just have a feeling this time out will be the thing that turns the corner for Brown. He just has to get over the way he has been treated by management. Being fragile is not in his best interest. Anyway I hope he keeps it up.

    • nepp93 says:

Yeah, I hate it when teams give a young prospect first crack at a starting role on a playoff team and then demote them when they trade for an AS player at the same position. Yup, its all management’s fault.

      • Nowheels please says:

That is true only if you STILL regard Pence as a right fielder.

        • nepp93 says:

I consider both of them to be fairly comparable with the glove…which means I consider a fair shot that Victorino might be decapitated at some point in the season as the result of a defensive mishap.

    • Bellman says:

Look at the way Ortiz lashed out at the Boston press and mangement and he’s a senior citizen. It’s always, what have you done for me lately? For a youngster, he doesn’t have any history to fall back on. Brown just has to forge ahead.

  5. Bring Back Ron Gant says:

I think that if Brown plays well for a few weeks or month, than he will get the call up. He could provide the spark the big club is missing. They need him to get confidence and put all the pieces back together. I still have hope for Brown

    • philabaltfan says:

Once Brown comes up there can be no sending him back down (unless injury rehab)and let him play everyday despite any errors he makes in LF. Can he be any worse than Pence or Victorino right now?

    • Andrew Cleveland Alexander says:

Barring an implosion on the major league level that leads them to trade away Victorino and/or Pence, making it possible to give Brown a chance at a low-stakes audition in left, I think he will play this entire season at LHV. A lot could change, sure, but injuries + fielding concerns + not a great start batting makes patience a necessity.

  6. Snakster says:

Would I be unreasonably picayune if I ask about Hernandez’s 7 errors already? Seems like a lot for a second baseman at this stage of the season. Granted I don’t know how many chances he’s had. Love the stick so far though.

It appears that the Castro roller coaster is back up again.

    • Andrew Cleveland Alexander says:

My impression is that the scouts say he is a good fielder. Could just be one of those cases where he’s getting to balls that others don’t because of his range/speed. Galvis had a lot of errors every year in the minors as well for the same reason.

  7. DenverPhilsPhan says:

And Gillies, similar to Brown, sits out and comes back with back to back 2 hit games. I would love to see consistency from these 2.

  8. Lenny says:

I bet Susdorf turns out to be the best hitter (player?) on the Lehigh team. Will that make people take him seriously ?

    • Boston Phan says:

The Brown, Mitchell, Susdorf outfield is a study in contrasts – older org guy who can really hit, former top prospect trying to figure it out, year-by-year toolsy guy trying to make the leap. A top fielder, a slow but steady fielder and an inconsistent (at best) fielder.

      I love the minor leagues.

    • Rick says:

Susdorf has hit at every level and still yet to be taken seriously.

      • Anonymous VOR says:

In order to taken seriously, you have to be able to play a position… and if your position is 1B, you better be hitting more than Susdorf.

        • Handzus says:

What if your position is LF? Pretty sure that’s where he’s getting his reps.

          • Alan says:

He’s not a very good outfielder though. I haven’t seen much of him but when I did, his range was poor and he looked awkward.

The big problem for a guy like Susdorf is realistically, older players need to OPS somewhere between .900 and 1.000 just to catch attention.

            • Handzus says:

Well, he did OPS just over .900 last year. He’s shy of that so far this year but we’ll see. But it’s not just about him being an eventual ML starter, that’s probably a stretch. He just deserves a chance to play everyday in AAA and looks like a potential MLB extra man.

        • Rick says:

I’m not sure you can make an argument that he doesn’t play LF better than Raul and every bit as well as Pierre. Cheaper than both to boot.

          • Anonymous VOR says:

I’m cannot make the argument that Susdorf is any worse defensively, because their is no data to support either side. What I do know is that a .776 OPS (in a hitters environment, from a 26 year old, Double A, LF) is not worthy of attention.

          • bluethree says:

The problem is that Susdorf doesn’t have the power that Ibanez has or the speed that Pierre has.

  9. Anonymous says:

what is the trick again in ‘blowing up’ the boxscores for better reading?

  10. bradindc says:

That may have been James’ trick that I did not inherit. All I would say is you can increase your browser zoom, but it does get blurry. I’m not a graphics guys, so anyone with advice feel free to find me on twitter and connect that way. @bxe1234

  11. bradindc says:

Oh, forget it. I think I can make it work like it used to. Check in tomorrow and tell me if you think it’s better.

  12. Handzus says:

James and Castro are both hitting better lately. James still won’t take a walk though. Neither will Castro but he’s only got 2 Ks in his last 37 ABs.

  13. Anonymous says:

I think it is way too early to give up on Brown. The tools are there, and I think if he puts together a good month, you promote him and maybe let him learn form Juan Pierre. His arm is a major plus compared to what is in left field at the big level right now. It is all about Brown’s mental approach.

  14. Phillies_Aces35 says:

Still think Brown’s defense is being overblown. He may not catch everything hit his way but his arm alone would save a ton of runs that Juan Pierre’s has cost us.

  15. Anonymous says:

Assuming Mrs Rollins and Baby Rollins are fully healthy, does anyone else find it a bit ridiculous that Rollins needs two days off when we are playing in division games at a time when Utley and Howard are already out of the lineup? Ignore the argument that Fontenot is probably as capable with the bat right now as Jimmy is, but this kind of ticks me off that he can’t spend 5 hours out of his day to play a game while the wife and kid are at home? Again, I’m assuming they are healthy and if there is even the slightest bit of concern about anything, that changes everything, but otherwise, it seems kind of weird. Like where is the sense of urgency?

    • Alan says:

Pretty sure you’re the only one. At least, I pray to god you are.

    • Boston Phan says:

Major companies offer a one or two week paternity leave these days. He gets two days. I do not begrudge him that at all. Big picture.

    • SIFPA says:

The way Jimmy has been hitting, a couple of days off to recharge his batteries couldn’t hurt.

    • Andrew Cleveland Alexander says:

You know, you’re right, this is typical of the pampered behavior of infants, selfishly demanding the attention of our starting shortstop. Little Rollins has had his every need taken care of for nine months inside his mother’s womb, comes out to discover that not only does he live in a mansion, his father is SUPERSTAR BASEBALL PLAYER, and yet all he has to say is WAAAAAAAAAAA! I really worry about these babies of today.

    • 3up3kkk says:

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that people just can’t seem to keep their daily complaints about the big club out of the daily boxscore section.

      • Anonymous says:

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that there isn’t a general discussion posting so people like you can stop complaining?

        • Jameson says:

No, we feel like prospect pages belong to prospect discussion. That is how it was from the beginning, and hopefully shall stay. Try just a little respect for this site and what it supposed to be “anonymous”

    • Phillies_Aces35 says:

No. Not at all… not like he’s hitting anyway.

Also, gave Kratz a nice chance to showcase his power. Straightaway Center Field power is nice to see from your third catcher.

      Also… P.s.

Our old friend Quintin Berry is being called up to the Tigers… something to watch.

  16. Philly phil says:

whats wrong with the whole a ball crew why aren’t they hitting any more like in the beginning of the year and is valle ok or is he just in a slump

  17. Anonymous says:

Rough and quick nite for Trevor May, lasted two innings.

    • Anonymous says:

He has regressed significantly in May, ironically

      • Bellman says:

Trevor is following the path that I expected. I thought he’d dominate early in AA and then hitters would adjust. I expect May will take some time to figure out his own adjustment. August will be key for him. The only surprise is, I thought hitters would adjust quicker and early-May would start the problems for him.

Buchanon has been bombed from the start and I’m hoping he’ll make his adjustments soon.

    • MattWinks says:

It was bad but I would rather see a guy just give up the parade of hits without walking people. It means something was dramatically off, whether he was just throwing stuff down the middle or whatever, the end result is that they must have been making strong contact and they strung them together. It happens.

  18. Anonymous says:

    Jake Diekman tonight:1.2 IP 1H 4K 20 pitches thrown, 17 strikes….filthy

    • Anonymous says:

This comment doesn’t belong here, this is for discussions on minor league boxscores.

      • catch22hman says:

Actually, it’s a pretty well established practice on this site to discuss recently promoted and first year players provided that they came up throught the Phillies’ system. Diekman fits well within those parameters as do Savery and the wonderfully surprising Freddy Galvis.

  19. sam soap says:

Hey whats everyone think of justin friend? 0.60 era a closer not bad

    • BillB says:

I think he’s a great pitcher with great stuff and has done nothing but dominate since the Phillies acquired him in the Rule 5 draft. And even better, a quality human being. Excerpt frpm a philly.com interview from last year “Giving back: Inspired by the relationship he had with his uncle, Friend works as an aid in the offseason at special education/special needs facilities in the San Joaquin County. “Some of these kids have such a struggle getting out of bed or ever leaving their homes,” Friend said. “It absolutely puts everything into perspective about how lucky [we] are to go out and play a game every day.”

  20. Bellman says:

It’s time to start thinking about demotions from Lakewood to Williamsport. When the short-season opens, who do you expect to be sent down? Eldemire is hitting .220 but has a .359 OBP. I think he stays. Franco is hitting .234 and is young but he has 20 RBIs and has already proven himself at Wmsprt so i think he stays. Logan Moore is one that I think can be moved down. He’s hitting .193 but he also has a .343 OBP. He has 9 PBs and a 17% CS%. Gustavo Gonzalez definitely could be moved down. He’s hitting .183/.241/.183.

    • catch22hman says:

Eldemire is too old to go down, he’s either going to improve at Lakewood or go someplace else. That said, I think they will give him multiple second chances. He’s a really good athlete and, unlike a lot of our other tool shed players, he actually has some pedigree in college ball.
