Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 3 Wrap

Lakewood won a thrilling Game 3 on a walk-off single by Jeremy Barnes.  An excellent start by Brody Colvin who held Greenville in check on a run on three hits over five innings.  Kudos to a big-time clutch outing by Kyle Carr who came into a second and third, one-out jam in the seventh and struck out the two batters he faced.  Game 4 this afternoon at 4:05 with Jonathan Pettibone on the hill.  In the event Lakewood loses, another game will follow with Trevor May pitching.

Valle with the big hit and Zeid with a dominating relief performance.
Pettibone also threw an effective 5 innings and got the win.
A great season by the Claws.

It is great for young guys to be involved in high pressure games. And to win is awesome, especially for those guys who may never make the majors. They can say they were part of a professional baseball Championship team.

After last years’ Championship I expected Clearwater to be better but: May demoted; Cloyd, Corriea and Murphy stunk; Mattair retired; Rosenberg hurt; Gose, D’Arnaud, Knapp traded; Garcia and DeFratus deservedly promoted to AA.

Threshers are gonna be so sick

Zeid was dominating for your typical four inning no hit save. Came on and induced a ground ball DP then proceeded to get a strike out on a 95 mph fast ball in the 6th. Struck out the side in the 8th on 94 and 96 mph fastballs and an 84 mph off speed pitch. Last night it was Valle’ catching skills behind the plate blocking and catching pitches way out of the zone with the lead runner in scoring position and throwing out a runner trying to steal second to help set the stage for a 2-1 walk off win . Today it was a no doubt about it first pitch fastball line drive to the birm left for three runs to clinch the series.

So for anybody who has seen Zeid pitch…do you think he gets a double jump to Reading? Phils might be up for minor league system of the yr w/two championships

  11. mike77 says:

That GCL title was a fraud. They used a bunch of older players to win in the playoff series. Gump and number of older pitchers played in the playoffs.
Threepeat might be in order for Lakewood next year though. A lot of good players coming up from Williamsport.

  12. kphilly says:

It is not like they loaded up their line-up with AAA players to win. Gump was the only one there on a rehab assignment and Tim Brown was the final game starter. If Biddle wasn’t already called up I’m sure he would have started. Some of their younger position players like Altherr and Dugan weren’t around for the playoffs. They had a good team as they were in 1st place for the whole year.

Congats to Lakewood another great season
