About Jeff Crupper

It depends on which blog you are reading, but now now you have either discovered that I am a huge baseball fan, or that I have a twisted sense of humor and like to rant about just about anything. Whichever it is I hope you enjoy your stay and spread the word.

  1. Ryanhoward06 says:

Really surprised to see Edgar Garcia released. Unless I am reading that wrong.

Also, anyone have injury reports for Cosart and Cisco?

  2. Wildone says:

Mitchell shows up in 2 places. Group 3 outfield and released.

  3. The Artist Formerly Known As Michael Bourn says:

there’s no way they released edgar garcia. has to be a typo.

  4. dcwildcat53 says:

garcia was two years too young in AA… there is no way they just go release him unless he went and had his arm amputated.

  5. Matt says:

The AAA outfield is set. You’re missing Mayberry and Ellison.

  6. PGD says:

and carrasco isnt on there i guess he hasn’t got to camp yet

  7. governator1 says:

    Things I like:
-Michael Taylor, Vance Worley, and Mike Stutes at AA
-Michael Schwimer and Kyle Drabek at A+
-Zach Collier and Jason Knapp at A

    things that confuse me:
-Edgar Garcia cut? i’ll assume that’s a typo and he’s headed to AA
-Travis Mattair at Lakewood again. Observer reports seemed good, but he did suck last year and there’s overbeck who jumped him.
-Hewitt at Lakewood…i’ll assume he’ll ultimately do XST and then Williamsport
    -Valle at Lakewood…see Hewitt above
-Heitor Correa and Kyle Slate hurt? I hope they’re Ok and it’s nothing serious. hopefully Cosart is ok as well.

  8. ArmChairGM says:

Be nice to know what’s up with Basil injury wise, as well.

  9. Ducky says:

I’d be very surprised if Worley and Stutes both actually started the season in Reading as starters. Savery, Brummett, Garcia, Worley, Stutes would be the rotation there in some order I’d imagine. Two guys drafted the previous year starting in Reading? That’s a big jump, even as college seniors or whatever they were.

  10. Billy Mac says:

Tiffee being released is a bit of a surprise.

  11. MLL says:

I also find it hard to believe that Garcia was released. Threshers Nation- can you check with whomever distribute the list and see if it is, in fact, erroneous?

I am also quite surprised to see Derrick Mitchell released. Other than Andrew Cruse and Moises Melendez (and the two above) , the rest were never going to be major leaguers. Other than Garcia, the other three would be, at best, bench players.

  12. From Section 113 says:

Ok so I worked a 24 hour shift yesterday and wake up this morning to see that:
    1. jenkins is cut
    2. Park, not Happ is the 5th starter (good for him)
    3. Garcia is cut?????
    4. Hewitt going to Lakewood? I thought they were going slow with him?

  13. RodeoJones says:

Edgar Garcia cut? Did the Phillies pull an April Fool’s joke on us? I bet CADIE came up with it.

  14. Pat Burrell says:

It wouldn’t surprise me. John Manuel said in his podcast over on RPhils.com that Arbuckle was his biggest supporter and that he needs to perform ASAP, maybe he showed up out of shape and the Phils told him to beat it.

  15. RULZ says:

Why would D’Arnaud and Valle be on the same team?

  16. There was hesitation on releasing this to me because of the provisional nature. This is far from complete, and I actually expect a newer better version soon. I just put this up for consumption because I had been getting a lot of requests.

Don’t get overly concerned about the placement of players. A lot is still going to change.

  17. Squire says:

Don’t know about Garcia but my gut reaction is that Derrick Mitchell has *not* been released but rather converted to an OF (since his INF defense was so bad). The Phillies still have to do another round of cuts or really cramdown to the extended roster. If you add back Mayberry, Ellison and Carrasco to AAA you have 24 + 1 on the DL which is a legal AAA roster. For AA I have the Phillies at 27 (3 over legal). For High A I have them at 29 + 2 on the DL (4 over legal) and at Low A I have them at 34 + 5 on the DL (which is 9 over legal)

  18. Squire says:

Jeff – I love reading these so thanks for your efforts.

  19. Mitchell was indeed NOT cut. I accidentally listed him there when I also had him in group 3 which is where he actually is.

The list of cut players was added by me. It was not officially on the list I got. I compiled it by comparing the list I had to previous lists. It is possible that someone is on there who has not been cut. In the case of Edgar Garcia I have triple checked, and he is not listed in any workgroup on the list I have. It is possible that he is mistakenly left off, and that as a result I mistakenly show him as cut.

  20. Ezcheez says:

    Edgar Garcia cut…. APRIL FOOLS!!

  21. DiamondDerby says:

We might add Happ to the AAA list.

What stands out to me is that we are having some talented guys reaching AAA with no opening on Phils yet–AND, we are having some guys pushed down from Phils who would have made it in other years from pure desperate need.

This makes AAA a genuine stockpile of reserve players. There will be some hurt feelings involved among guys who think they should be with Phils, but that is a good problem. Some of them will feel better when they are called up and then the others will see some hope too.

But for the first time in many years, we are seeing some depth rise to the high minors. Another 1 or 2 drafts like last year and some more talent rising to high minors and we could have annual AA/AAA stockpile sites.

  22. DiamondDerby says:

I am hoping Hewitt does XST and then repeat GCL. If he breaks through and hits well at GCL, then move him to W’port.

  23. DiamondDerby says:

At W’port, with college guys locating breaking balls, he could wind up hitting .120. Why would anyone throw him a FB?

  24. Ducky says:

Just noticed that Cisco is listed as injured (presumably, that’s what the yellow means). Anybody know what happened?

  25. readingphanatic says:

has edgar garcia even pitched in any spring training games? If so, how has he done?

  26. Ryanhoward06 says:

There’s not too many organizations with a AAA team that the Phils will have this year. All the relievers that aren’t making the team gives them a lot of insurance.

If they do have another good draft and maybe a big international signing they could definitely move in the top 5 systems. A lot of the teams in front of them should have graduating talent this year.

That’s all depending on the guys they have now continuing to develop.

  27. Murray says:

LOTS of talent!! My guess is Hewitt will play a litle at Lakewood until Williamsport starts and then go down there and play more (unless he’s hitting at Lakewood and they move Mattair up instead).

Great stuff, let’s get this year started!!

  28. PhilsLifer says:

Gerard Breslin retired two weeks ago. He was not released.

  29. Bellman says:

Just saw this on Philly.com from David Murphy:

    11) Kyle Drabek will start tomorrow against the Yankees. Dubee said they are bringing the 2006 first round pick over from minor league camp for a few reasons. First and foremost, he has impressed the entire organization with the way he has bounced back from 2007 Tommy John surgery. The Phillies really think he can be a big part of their future. Dubee also said they wanted to remind him what he is pitching for — a chance to do things like pitch against the Yankees. I know from this writer’s perspective, it will be a nice change of pace to watch a new face on the mound.

  30. Gregg says:

A member of the Iron Pigs Media Relations Department has told me that “Terry Tiffee has not been released”, as of about 5 minutes ago.

  31. Pat Burrell says:

Drabek vs. the Yanks real lineup and CC Sabathia live now. My guess is he walks a few guys with some nerves kicking in big time.

  32. Didnt Cole rise to the occasion when he had the opportunity to pitch against the Yankees in spring training? I recall he struck out Arod and Jeter?

  33. Billy Mac says:

I was at that 2004 spring training game at Steinbrenner Field. Hamels struck out Jeter, A Rod , and Tony Clark in succession — all on change ups. He was only 20 years old.

  34. Chris says:

The Phillies aquired minor league RHP Manny Ayala from SD.
I posted the story on the transaction page.

    Here is his stats.
    http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/A/Manny-Ayala.shtml

  35. Bellman says:

    Drabek’s given up 2 hits and a run (unearned) with a K through 2.

Last year, Carpenter got a late ST game against the Yankees. I saw it on YES. He pitched very well but that wasn’t an indication of his year.

  36. Pat Burrell says:

Drabek’s out. Got rocked in the 3rd after getting Jeter out. Gave up a homer to Tex, then a couple hits and a walk.

  37. Chris says:

Ben Pfinsgraff found a job already per the USA Today another former Phillie farmhand Zach Penprase signed as well in the Northern League.

    Northern League
FARGO-MOORHEAD REDHAWKS-Agreed to terms with INF Carlo Cota, INF Zach Penprase, INF Jeremiah Piepkorn and OF Ozzie Borrell.

GARY SOUTHSHORE RAILCATS-Agreed to terms with LHP Tom Thornton.

SCHAUMBURG FLYERS-Agreed to terms with INF Caonabo Cosme. Released RHP Alex Rollin.

WINNIPEG GOLDEYES-Signed RHP Derek Feldkamp and RHP Ben Pfinsgraff.

  38. nowheels please says:

I cant grasp why they even gave Drabek the start. What is the upside to a guy still not totally healed. If he tries to throw too
    hard…..square one…

  39. Skunky says:

I absolutely love that they gave Drabek the start, I don’t care what the results were. He’s a future ace and they seem to be done coddling him.

  40. Pat Burrell says:

How is he not totally healed? He had surgery a year and a half ago.

  41. Gregg Says:
    April 1, 2009 at 12:22 pm edit
A member of the Iron Pigs Media Relations Department has told me that “Terry Tiffee has not been released”, as of about 5 minutes ago.

TOTALLY MY BAD! I rechecked and he is there, but is at the bottom of a group under a bunch of blanks…I have TRIPLE and QUADRUPLE checked though, and do not see EDGAR GARCIA listed anywhere…

  42. RodeoJones says:

I love that they did this for Drabek. I think it’s a reward for his hard work and a little something to show him what he’s working for…and how far he still has to go.

  43. nowheels please says:

    Pat Burrell Says

How is he not totally healed? He had surgery a year and a half ago
total healing takes 18 months but this kind of pressure on a guy with only a partial season under his belt is unnessary

Do you think he gained anything from it Pat?

  44. Anonymous says:

Brauer starting for the threshers, isnt he a bit old for that?

  45. AFein says:

D’Arnaud and Valle at Lakewood? Is it possible that Valle is playing so well that he’s coming up too fast for D’Arnaud? Because they obviously want them both starting somewhere.

I also feel that they should start Naylor at AA

And they cant possibly be considering Gose at lakewood to start. He’s very young and raw, and will kill his confidence playing up there from the start.

  46. AFein says:

Oh, and there are many reasons why Edgar Garcia may not have been listed on a workout group but there’s no way he’s cut. Karl Bolt isnt listed but he’ll be there, as he’s busy with military work. Maybe he has a heitor correa type issue, who knows. But they wouldnt just let him go like that

  47. Rickey Branch says:

Have not seen E. Garcia all spring.

Today the AAA and AA teams of the Rays provided the oppositon. For Reading Stutes looked good in striking out 5 in 3.2 innings of work. giving up 2 runs on 3 hits but a small strike zone cost him three walks and helped set up the runs.. Taylor lined one out over the left field fence at Schmidt.. He looked like he is ready for opening night.

Had some interest in the AAA game on Ashburn as Lopez made the start. Donald was the SS, Marson caught, Mayberry hit. but had little interest in how Fermaniak handled third. But what did catch my attention was Leandro Castro in center and T..J. Warren in right. for this game. Warren showed why he is a long shot to ever make the Show and Castro is a good prospect make it. In one back to back at bat I watched with a runner on third and less than two outs Warren struck out on breaking balls and with two strikes on him Castro hit a line drive sac. fly to center to get the run in.

That’s it for me. It’s time to start the season.

  48. Pat Burrell says:

What are you talking about? He gets to compete against the New York Yankees. What would be bad about that? He might throw too hard? Give me a break. And it’s been almost 18 months, by the way. Just like some of the rational folks on here have commented; it’s a reward for his hard work, improved maturity, and a test to show him where he needs to be to be the star pitcher he wants to be. And as for pressure? If he can’t handle “pressure” in Spring Training he needs to find another profession.

  49. Pat Burrell says:

I’m sorry it’s been almost 24 months. He surgery in 07.

  50. Comack15 says:

I would find it extremely hard to believe that Edgar Garcia has been released and a more logical explanation would the the Steve Susdorf explanation. If Garcia is physically unable to work out at all with the team, like Susdorf apparently is unable to after hip surgery, then he will likely not be listed in a workout group. I would take him off of the “release” list for now.

  51. nowheels please says:

Well you see it your way . I certainly have the right to see it mine. Not counting winter ball he has pitched 32 innings in low A ball. What the hell is the rush. but i respect you opinion and would agree except for the medical thing and the baseball youth of Drabek

  52. Airborneranger says:

Jeff, quietly ask Mike Compton, he’ll give you the straight skinny on Garcia.

  53. Anonymous says:

Furmaniak, Ozuna, and Cairo are redundant at AAA (assuming Cairo doesn’t make the big club).

Chavez and Leon are redundant at AA, especially since Harman can play both 2B and SS. I’d like to see the R-Phils keep Antoniato over both Leon and Chavez, but who knows.

One of Milner, Moran, and Ruan is going to get cut at Reading, and Spidale might be in trouble, too, despite hitting pretty well this spring.

Either Galvis or FHernandez has to move off of the A+ roster since they’ll be stealing each other’s time. I think the Phils still like Fidel. I think Yondy Rodriguez will end up at Lakewood or WMPT (since he’s at CLW with Overbeck), but they might keep 2 3Bs at CLW, I guess. Yondy wouldn’t find a lot of ABs behind Mattair, either.

Unless they push a lot of guys up and release some veteran minor leaguers, there won’t be enough playing time for quite a few OFs at Lakewood/CLW or the 3Bs or SSs at CLW.

  54. allentown says:

What’s the deal with Correa? He missed all last season for mysterious reasons and now he’s hurt? Did he pitch at all in ST games this year?

  55. Pat says:

In regards to all the posts with Garcia, being young in AA, not on the roster, not in spring training….sounds to me like a release to me, invalid visa, incorrect age…???

  56. Max says:

My experience over the years tells me that when a club releases somone, they generally announce it. When the decision is on behalf of the player, it goes “un-announced”, and that is when rumor and speculation enter. Point in example: Mach. Players many times have to evaluate their chances of ever “making the show”, or have other career options, and when they do, there’s rarely any fanfare attached.

  57. anonymphool says:

I heard that garcia was being investigated for incorrect age…perhaps they caught him

  58. Anonymous says:

    Source?

  59. smokey says:

Nebulous rumors serve no purpose to sincere inquiring minds.

  60. dag5 says:

According to Jeff Schulers blog at mcall.com, we should know the rosters of the four full season teams either tonight or tomorrow.

  61. we may know rosters close to final (at least final for the “prospects”), but they won’t be actually final until Monday or later for the rest of the guys…

  62. I personally want to know where everyone ends up, not just the true prospects. I cheer these guys on season in and season out. I want them all to live the dream as long as possible.

  63. Gregg says:

Saw this on the Blueclaws website this afternoon about Karl Bolt. Interesting to look at the other names on the list. Strasberg, Tony Gwynn’s kid, and a couple other impressive names. Nice award for Bolt.

    http://blog.blueclaws.com/2009/former-claw-bolt-named-to-mountain-west-baseball-10th-anniversary-team/

  64. Squire says:

BlueClaws Blog reports that the Lakewood roster will be released tomorrow (4/4) morning).

    SQUIRE

  65. went to the game last night it was great to hear ten year olds chanting lets go phillies again. hasnt changed in my 50 years just a wonderful sound. once again donald affirms my belief he is a star not just good but a star. the only untouchable on the minor league roster since we have no other infielder in our sysyem. he should be up by the break he will force it. by the way when does major league time begin at the as break anyone? nice to know i will finally get to see d,armand in person. also knapp.

  66. Billy Mac says:

Threshers Nation, I am with you. I am interested where everyone winds up.

  67. IronPigPen says:

    Here, Here

for knowing where EVERYONE winds up and ALL who were released.

What’s up with Edgar Garcia anybody?

  68. stranded in the DR with visa problems from what I hear.

  69. Mike says:

don’t know where to put this but Jonathan Pettibone is pitching tonight for Williamsport and doing very very well after 3 IP he hasn’t given up a hit and has 5K’s.
