Morning Musings

It appears that the last two men standing in the quest to replace Brett Myers in the Phils rotation are JA Happ and Brian Mazone.  With the injury to Carlos Carrasco and the fact that Chad Durbin pitched out of the bullpen last night, Happ and Mazone are the only legitimate options remaining.  Mazone is scheduled to pitch tonight for Lehigh Valley, while Happ is scheduled to go tomorrow.

In the debut of Brett Myers with the Iron Pigs, he went 5 innings giving up 3 runs on five hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 6, while throwing 100 pitches, 60 for stikes in the 5-3Pigs loss. Box Score

Carlos Carrasco was removed from last nights start after throwing 3 warm up tosses with pain in his shoulder.  Talk about bad timing.  Jason Donald had a homer(10) and 5 RBI’s in the 9-2 Reading win.  Box Score

Lakewood won 4-2 behind Jacob Diekman who threw 6 string innings.  Box Score

In the New York Penn League, D’Arby Myers hit his first homer and Michael Stutes threw 5 shutout innings in the 4-3 Williamsport loss. Stutes lowered his ERA to 0.82 in his 3 starts.   Box Score

In the Gulf Coast League, the Phils lost 9-3.  Vladimir DeLosSantos knocked his 3rd homer in 43 at bats, and Anthony Gose went 1-4 in a sloppy game in which the Phils committed 3 errors. Box Score

Anyone else think that this “injury” to Carrasco could just be the Phillies way of saying “we haven’t made a decision yet” and don’t want to give the Mets any idea who they are facing on Friday?

  2. 3up3kkk says:

They could have just as easily just said they were pushing back his start a few days without going through the fake injury routine.

Also, why would they want to put any doubt of injury out there if he is potentially part of a major deal for a starter…

  3. lancophilsphan says:

Supposedly there were scouts from five different teams in Reading last night to see Carrasco.

  4. Neduol Caz says:

I don’t think there is anyway the Phillies would fake an injury to Carrasco. How does that help the situation at all? It drops his trade value and it hurts because he did not get to perform for the scouts. Also, I do not think Carrasco has any shot of pitching for the Phillies this year. They would really have to disrespect Happ in order to make this happen. Happ is on the 40 man roster, Happ is further in his development, Happ is in AAA, and Happ has performed better than Carrasco this year. That would really be a shot in the balls to Happ.

  5. Neduol Caz says:

Also, Happ is on schedule to pitch Friday for the Iron Pigs, the same day the Phillies will need to try out a new starter. In my opinion, this is a done deal. Of course, that means the Phils will pull Mazone tonight and make me look like an idiot, but oh well…

  6. KeithRichard'sMixedDrink says:

I think Neduol is correct on his read of things on Happ. It’s fuuny how most postes her haver a great red on thinsg, yet the Phillies don’t. On another topic, one thing never mentioned on Eric Bedard is that he’s a 100 pitch, 6 inning pitcher who likes to visit the DL. Is that what the Phillies really want?

  7. Will says:

Still waiting to see Kyle Slate and Jiwan James get some GCL innings… 12 games into the season and neither has made an appearance.

  8. RodeoJones says:

I would never trade Carrasco as part of a deal for Bedard. Carrasco will probably be ready next year and they need him long term.

  9. Gregg says:

Just saw where Brett Myers will be having his arm “checked” by a dr….looks like we made more than a short term solution.

  10. 3up3kkk says:

    Where is that being reported?

I saw that Carrasco was being sent to the team’s doctors to have his shoulder “checked” after experiencing tightness but don’t see anything on Myers…

  11. PhillyFriar says:

Speaking of Myers — no I mean the other one — D’Arby has hit well to start his Williamsport campaign this year. I know he had a frustrating run in Lakewood, but at 19 years old still, Williamsport is actually the age appropriate league for him. The Phils should leave him there for the rest of the year, and he can try again at Lakewood next year, when he’ll still be on track (so to speak).

Oh, and just to echo: Happ should be a no-brainer. Hopefully this whole business is just deception from the front office.

Sorry I screwed the link up. I can’t seem to figure out how to post a link to this board.

Here it is again (the article about Meyers being checked out):

  15. 3up3kkk says:

    thanks.

Sounds more like they are just covering all angles looking for a cause of his struggles rather than actually suspecting something is wrong.

  16. lancophilsphan says:

This is a good article on the Meters situation as well:

  17. bob says:

i really hope they dont trade carrasco.
i know that we want to win now and not wait another 25 yrs.
    but i really like carrasco.
    dont trade him for bedard.

man baseball is so hard sometimes.

  18. mazoner33 says:

    who is pitching friday

  19. Trading Carrasco makes for a sad panda…

  20. RodeoJones says:

You might be, judging from your name, mazoner33.

  21. Darren says:

Jason Knapp just pitched 3 innings today in the GCL.

    3 IP – 6 K’s – 1 H – 1 ER.

The run scored on a wild pitch.

  22. PP Fan says:

i really like knapp. i think that he can become something special

  23. KeithRichard'sMixedDrink says:

    Curt Schilling II?

  24. RodeoJones says:

Curt Schilling II – Electric Boogaloo

  25. PhillyFriar says:

It’ll be interesting to see how many innings Knapp gets for the GCL Phils. Since he’s from the Northeast, he probably didn’t log too many innings during his high school season, so maybe we’ll see him finish 40 or so innings by the end of summer.

And a nice 3-for-5 today from Collier. Given the project that Hewitt is bound to be, it’d be nice for Collier to hit the ground running.

  26. Neduol Caz says:

It is official, Happ will start tommorow against the Mets. http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20080703_Happ_to_start_against_Mets_tomorrow.html

  27. Woohoo…Happ to the majors, Edgar Garcia to Reading and Worley to Lakewood…young guns movin’ on up.

  28. MDG says:

Is that kid Valle really a left handed catcher?

  29. Darren says:

Edgar Garcia promoted to AA. Another good prospect in Reading to watch.

  30. RodeoJones says:

I’ll get to see Happ tomorrow. I hope this start against the Mets goes a little smoother.

  31. Ducky says:

Valle throws right bats left. I think it’s been confirmed that milb has it switched.

  32. andyb says:

Phillies media guide has Valle batting left and throwing right.

  33. Rickey Branch says:

Worley will start for Lakewood tomorrow against Lexington according to the play by play guy tonight . Watched the game on Milb-tV. Dominic Brown hit a two run dinger far over the left field wall to get Lakewood to within one in the 9th, 3-2, but Bolt and Durant struck out to end the game. Tomorrow’s game will be televised again on the internet. Interesting to see what Worley can do.

  34. Darren says:

Rickey do you have a link to watch the game ? Does it cost any $

  35. Alex says:

Correction to Rickey above. Bolt was on deck when the game ended. Miller and Durant struck out to end the game. The Video link is a pay site, but I think it’s only $6 or $7 one time. This is the last video broadcast of the season for the BC’s. Go to Milb.com, go to the Lakewood BC’s, and go to League scores and click on the TV camera below the box score.

  36. EZ E says:

I have to say i was impressed with Happ..Sure his nerves might have led to some command issues but you cant fault him for that in the setting he was put in to..His fastball touched 92, good offspeed stuff as well..The thought of him learning from hamels and moyer makes me think he can be a very solid starter.

  37. PhillyFriar says:

Exciting day in the minors from a pitching standpoint. Worley and Garcia make their debuts at Lakewood and Reading, respectively. Meanwhile, Cloyd starts in the GCL, Roth starts for Williamsport, and Carpenter starts for Clearwater (at least based on looking back at the past schedule). Oh, and Blackley’s even been pitching well lately for the IronPigs. Plus the Phils won last night on a walk-off. Ahh, life is good.

  38. xfactor says:

Byrd, not Carpenter, started for Clearwater today. He’s given up 6 earned in 5 innings so far. Then again there are already 4 errors behind him.

  39. lancophilsphan says:

Not sure where to post this, but supposedly the Phils have signed Lidge to an extension. A formal announcement is expected before the game today. No word on years or dollars. What does this mean for Meyers? Could he be dealt?

  40. EZ E says:

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Closer Brad Lidge signed a $37.5 million, three-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

  41. SirAlden says:

Who is signed now who is not highlighted on the list?

    Just Hewitt and Poe ?

    Thanks.

  42. lancophilsphan says:

Hewitt signed and is headed the GCL.
