Another close vote yesterday, as I suspect they all will be from here on out, with Dominic Brown just edging out fellow toolsy OF D’Arby Myers and Antonio Bastardo.

And here’s a reminder for the eligibilty
For the purpose of this poll, consider “eligibility” to be less than 50 AB/25 games for a position player, and less than 25 IP/20 games as a pitcher.
So, here is where a few other guys stand
Mathieson: 37 IP. Not eligible
Zagurski: 25 G. Not eligible

I’ve been advocating Bastardo for a while, so Bastardo it is. It’s nice to see that Brown got some attention.

I’m going to continue to pimp for Mattair. Unless someone can inform me otherwise (i.e he has lousy range, poor work habits, can’t hit water if he fell out of a boat, etc), I’m going to have high hopes for him.

Mattair plays well defensively. He is quick at the hot spot, and his throws are consistant and generally quick release. But he has yet to show any strength at the plate. This is not from stats, but from watching him first hand. His swing is way too long (you can get away with that in HS) and you’ll never catch up at this level or higher. He has shown some power when he reads a fastball with that long swing, but I would not at this point put him this high on the prospect list. As far as the work habits, attitude, hustle. No problem with this kid.
My vote goes to Berry. Much higher predictability. He will make it to the Bigs.

Drew Naylor won’t get the votes this round so I’ll vote Quintin Berry. Philly needs another QB that can run…

If Bisenius is eligible I think he should be considered at this point. Until this year he has been in the fast lane and Gillick was extremely high on him last spring.
If he is back on top of his fastball (Arizona League statistics
look good) and physically strong he has great potential .(control is an issue but look at Romero)

Thanks for the scouting report Alex. Given that Mattair is only 18, I’m sure they can definitely get him to shorten the swing up – hearing that his other tools are pretty sound is reassuring.
I might need to reconsider my ranking tomorrow.

Bastardo is fine. Need to do Galvis/Naylor/Myers soon
October 17, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Not sold on Bastardo. See he is on the roster of Gigantes del Cibao in the DWL. Let’s see what he does there. Like Naylor’s size and stuff.
October 17, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Bastardo. While I think his stats will suffer a little as he moves to Clearwater, he has very good potential. He may be a little like Gio Gonzalez in terms of his profile, though Gio throws a little harder (and is a better overall prospect).

Not sure why people are choosing D’Arby Myers over Quintin Berry…Berry has a better SB/CS ratio, much better plate discipline, and he’s a lefty while Myers is a righty. Sure Myers is younger, but Berry is clearly on the rise whereas Myers is stuck at square one and has a lot left to prove.
After listening to an interview with Berry I think his character is off the charts. I have no doubt that Berry will reach the Show, ETA late 2009, early 2010.

Berry. He was the Phils’ Minor League Player of the Year…and our F/O is never wrong!!
October 17, 2007 at 5:00 pm
You’ve swung my vote, smokey. As a bullpen guy, Bisenius certainly doesn’t have the upside of some of the others left, but odds are pretty good he’ll make the Phils out of spring training next year. I think this year was a one off and he’s set to take a step forward.

Bisenius. Setback year in 2007, but could still be a valuable reliever for the Phils. Knocking on the MLB door. #16 seems about right for him.

Forget the stats… Myers hit the ball harder and more consistently this year. All of you that jumped off his bandwagon from last to this year… Need to get back on. Stats aren’t everything. And, don’t forget that he’s still only 18!!!

i think it should be Naylor, but i’m voting Quintin Berry, simply because he may have learned something from tony gwynn. Speaking of tony Gwynn, great ballplayer, but seeing him on TBS, it looks as if he ate the old Tony Gwynn whole

October 18, 2007 at 8:29 am
Fish… Myers played most of the 2nd half with a broken hand.
BTW… Those of you that are sold on Berry, think again. He had the least playing time of all OF’s in the FIL. Same in extended spring.
