Great writeup, James. Sounds like an intereseting bunch, with a mix of high-risk/high-reward fliers and other guys who at least should strengthen the depth of the system. The more I read about Savery in particular, the more I think they might have done something pretty clever here.

I'm coming around a little on the D'Arnaud selection as well (much appreciate SQUIRE's encouraging note). But I'm still a bit bemused that they took a catcher so high up: it seems to me that between Ruiz, Jaramillo, Marson, and maybe Sanchez, they've got more depth up and down the organization at that position than anywhere else aside maybe from CF.

Yeah, Savery seems like he has plus plus makeup, same with Mattair and d'Arnaud. Not surprising that Gillick would target guys like that.

The more I read, the more I like the Savery pick (great recap BTW). Seems like a solid team guy with talent in the top of the first round. Hopefully the injury troubles are behind him. If so, I think he does move quickly. Williamsport this year. Probably Clearwater with a chance of a Reading promotion next year. Randy Wolf also moved very quickly as a somewhat similar pick. College lefties with plus stuff usually dominate younger HS hitters and get to high A/AA pretty quickly.

Good analysis, James. I like the first three picks very much.
Living down here in ConfUSA country, I have watched Savery for quite a while and like him very much. His changeup is wicked. He will be a quick study. I'm less excited about the remaining
picks, maybe because I know less about them. Like you, I am
most puzzled by the Spencer and Mach picks. My guess about the
former is that they might like him as LHP. He's said to have
touched 94 mph, which is pretty attractive for a lefty (maybe
reliever), but his command needs a lot of work. I was interested
by Wolever's comments the day before the draft, when he said that
they didn't expect any LH pitchers to fall to them. They got one
and, if my guess is correct, maybe two. Taylor looks to be
another of the big bopper hopefuls that the Phils have gone after
without success so far (unless you consider Howard in that
category): guys like Durant, Yarborough, and those 1B stiffs
(whose names I don't even remember now) from a few years ago. All in all, I'm not overwhelmed with the choices. They generally
stayed away from the marquee names, it seems.
