Scouting Report (Baseball America, 11/13/07)
Strengths: Despite his revamped delivery, deception remains Outman’s biggest strength on the mound. Hitters can’t get good reads on his 90-94 mph fastball, his late-biting, 83-84 mph slider or his changeup. He scrapped his curveball in 2007, and his arm speed and his location with his changeup improved dramatically as he concentrated on a three-pitch mix. He’s a good athlete and fields his position well.
Weaknesses: The patience of Double-A hitters was a wakeup call for Outman, who walked six in his Reading debut. He fell behind in counts after often overthrowing his fastball and elevating it in the strike zone. While he repeats his mechanics well, he throws with some effort and has a slight head jerk, especially when he throws his slider.
Rankings
2007: Phillies #4 (BA)
2006: Phillies #6 (BA), Phillies #4 (BP)

I wonder if anyone has some video of his old mechanics? It wouldn’t necessarily have to be him if the info about his dad teaching those mechanics is true… I’m just curious to see exactly what this funky windup looks like.
And by the way, James, excellent work with the profiles. It’s really a one-stop shopping of sorts for all the vital info on the prospects, and it adds a lot to the site.

Yeah, I’d love to find video of it. If anyone has it, please get in touch with me. You can kind of see the position he got his arm into before release in the last picture posted above.

its my belief that this guy is the left handed replacement for jamie moyer after he retires, or should he get hurt this year. what do you guys think?

I’ve seen Josh pitch when he attended Central Missouri State University (I work there). I’ve looked for some video, to no avail. The baseball staff here has rolled over twice since Josh pitched here. I’ll keep looking.
Josh has a younger brother named Zach who will be pitching at St. Louis University this year (under the same coach who was at CMSU when Josh was here). He still uses the Outman motion. You may be able to find some video of him.
For those interested, I wrote this article about Outman for another site: http://www.philaphans.com/news/combined/1118991849.html

Interesting from Scott Palmer’s interview that the FO views Outman as closer material. Wonder then if he starts or closes at Reading?
