Scouting Report (Baseball America, 2008 Handbook)
Donald has a short, compact stroke that produces gap power. He draws walks and has slightly above average speed, though he won’t be a basestealing threat. Scouts question his range and arm strength at shortstop, but Donald makes up for his deficiencies with outstanding positioning. The Phillies aren’t completely sold on him staying at shortstop, and he might be better suited as a utility man who can play both middle-infield spots and provide a line drive bat off the bench. He’ll move up to Double A in 2008.

I know BA is big on tools, but it really surprises me they still have Donald as low as #15 given the paucity of great prospects in the system. I don’t think there’s any way he isn’t somewhere between #6 and #10. Surprising.

i think it’s necessary to note that JD went yard twice today against two decent pitchers for the Blue Jays. I’m really liking what I see out of this kid. When you’ve got a guy as good as Donald, even if there’s a position blockage, you find a spot for him. This kid’s gonna where some major league jersey, and I’m hoping it’s Phillie pinstripes.

i see donald as the second coming of dustin pedroia of the red sox. Both were minor league short stops with some pop that needed to change positions. Obviously moving Donald to second wouldn’t do us much good, but moving him to 3rd could do us well. Even if we waste a year of his production, so be it, we have Feliz locked up for two years anyway so what bad comes from a lost year from a guy who is invariably blocked for the next 5-10 years.

pp jus checked out that sox website and looked at jed lowrie’s numbers. Donald and Lowrie seem to be very good comps. Do you think JD will start to get the respect Lowrie does around baseball?

Pretty decent comparison there. Lowrie gets more run because he’s a Red Sox prospect.
