Scouting Report (Baseball America, 11/13/07)
Strengths: Thick and strong, Cardenas has an easy, compact stroke from the left side that produces consistent line drives with good loft power. He squares up breaking balls and fastballs equally well, and he makes hard contact to all fields. He exhibits above-average arm strength at his new position.
Weaknesses: Cardenas moved off shortstop because his range was just adequate and figured to diminish as he filled out and grew older. He doesn’t cover a lot of ground at second base and his footwork needs improvement. A fringe-average runner, he lacks first-step quickness and his lateral movement also leaves something to be desired.
Rankings
2007: Phillies #2 (Baseball America)
2006: Phillies #3 (Baseball America), Phillies #7 (Baseball Prospectus)

Perhaps Cardenas is our new answer at third? He, Harman, and Baez are really all we have, and Cardenas is the best of the three, followed closely by Harman.

In one of the first hits it looked like he had a loop in his swing but the last hit was nice form. I see him as a solid major league second baseman. Nowhere near the level that Utley will reach (or has already reached) and I can’t see him finding a spot on this team. I’d say he goes at the trade deadline for some pitching help and a younger prospect or two.

Boy, he runs funny–really short steps, flat footed…I don’t think his speed will translate to the OF. He throws very sidearm in the video, not at all suitable for 3B.
